Recently, I found a number of online resources about Latvian Jews as follows:

There is a discussion by the European Union of multilingualism in Latvia and one
of the official languages listed is Yiddish. The info provided discusses the
Jews in Latvia which is interesting to read:
http://ec.europa.eu/languages/euromosaic/lat5_en.htm

An interesting piece entitled "Latvian Jews Between Germany and Russia" by Frank
(Efrayim) Gordon who was born in Latvia is of interest:
http://vip.latnet.lv/lpra/frank_gordon.htm

Yad Vashem has a site with information on various Latvian towns and also
provides videos of testimony. Photos are shown of various murder sites
including Skede and there is testimony >from survivors >from Liepaja, only one of
which is in English, that of Efraim Neuberger, the others are in Hebrew and
Russian:

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine RE: Fwd: Lipovets Ukraine #ukraine

Doug Cohen

Yad V'Shem's Encyclopedia of Jewish Life Before and During the Holocaust
says the following:

LIPOVETS, Vinnitsa dist., Ukr. Jews in Lipovets are first mentioned in
1747. There were over 1,000 in the area in the early 18th cent. In 1897,
the Jewish pop. of Lipovets was 4,135 of a total pop. of 8,658. Two state
Jewish schools wer operating in the early 20th cent. In the Soviet period,
a Jewish elementary school was opened and a Jewish concil (soviet) was
active. Dozens of Jewish families earned their livelihoods in agriculture.
In 1939, the Jewish pop. was 1,353. The Germans arrived on 24 July, 1941.
On 12 Sept they murdered 183 Jews and in Oct. another 60-70 in a nearby
forest.

Hope this is of interest.

Does anyone have any information about Lipovets, Ukraine? My ancestors,
Tabachnicks, were there at least >from late 1800s through early 1920s when
most had emigrated to Pittsburgh. I am interested in any lists or original
materials, or early 20th century photographs, etc. I haven't been able to
find much detailed information about my family, or Jewish life in that
community during that period. Thanks.
