Dear Genners
I wonder if any one knows of a research regarding the European ancestry of Joseph & Morris FELBER who emigrated >from Austria (Galicia) where they were born in the last quarter of the 19th century - to the U.S.in the early 1900's. This might help me in ascertaining the same about my gfather and his brother - with precisely the same names ! - only, they were born a generation earlier in Galicia. Moshe Felber 74848

I am writing after reading Ann Rabinowitz's posting of July 26,2008.
Can any of the list members provide more info whether the Yiddish newspapers in NY at the late 1800s published death announcements or even obits? Thanks Jacob Rosen Jerusalem

open mind, since there can be mistakes. (99% accuracy still means that most of us will encounter some mistake or other when researching our families.) I can only offer a few guesses, but if you were looking at original documents, they might have been written up, possibly, years after the events. (Official registers were instituted at different times, and events sometimes recorded retroactively, especially around the transition times.) It's a fairly obvious "mistake" to refer to a woman by her married name, in the case of the birth record for Hannah CARCAS, or it's also possible that Rebecca MARTIN's mother died in childbirth (unfortunately common in those days), and was adopted by her uncle and aunt. But if the data is >from a secondary source, such as an online index, it could be that the transcriber (or the document) confused another field, such as witnesses or godparents with the names of the parents, since these families are clearly related, and not likely to be just a coincidence. ...... tom klein, toronto

Hello my friends. Once again I am back to ask for any help to track
down a Jewish man who served in the British Army. Lance Corporal Juergen FRENKEL was one of very few Jews who served in the Trans Jordan Frontier Force - which was mostly Arab - during or just after WW2. His service number was 5104 and I know that in 1955 when he was issued with a British General Service Medal he was living at ** Kiryat Sefer Street, Ahuza, Haifa. I have tried to find any reference to him on Jewishgen without success. I would very much appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thank You, Eddie Parks (edwinprks@...)

South Africa SIG #SouthAfrica Leonard Harris query

Last week I asked if anyone had information about Leonard Harris, son of Lionel
and Lena Harris of Roodeport. I gave details of a tombstone in Westpark of a Lena Harris, making the erroneous assumption that this was his mother. Thanks to excellent research input >from Vanessa.... in Israel it's clear that he attested to being Roman Catholic on enlistment in the army and thus a cross on his war grave is correct. Moral, don't make presumptions unless you have absolute proof. Kind regards, Saul
