Hi everyone,

my uncle's grandfather was Samuel Markusz SMULYOVICS/SMILOVIC
(1887-1945). He was born and raised in what was then known as Patkos,
Bereg County, Hungary (today Patskan'ovo, Ukraine), although after
World War One he moved to the nearby city of Munkács (today Mukacheve,
Ukraine). My uncle heard two pieces of family lore about Samuel he'd
love some firm documentation on, and I was hoping someone on here
could help me find something on them. The lore in question is:

1. Samuel served in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War One.
This fact repeatedly came up in my uncle's father's memoir, but it
never said anything about what he actually did during the War or where
he served. Does anyone know if there are any surviving military
records that could shed light on Samuel's military service, and if so
how I can access them?

2. Before and during WW1, Samuel was mayor of his native town of
Patkos. It was a fairly small place at the time, with about 1276
people and 129 Jews in 1910. Allegedly, Samuel's wife Hani SCHVARCZ
also served as mayor in Samuel's absence during the War (although I
suspect it was unofficially). Is there any way to find documents that
could not only confirm he was the mayor, but learn something about his
time as mayor?

Hi AJ, 

Here are some thoughts, 

- the fact that Leopold gave his address as the US consulate in Moroni does not necessarily mean that he was a diplomat. Most probably he gave that address for contact while he was residing there. 
- the Comoros in 1971 were still part of France. That means that maybe you will have to search in French records in order to find more information about his death. 
-According to his sister's obituary dated from 1965 Leopold's permanent residence was in Austria. It is more probable that his wife made the arrangements to have him buried there. Maybe search also Austrian records.

An ITZIG RANBAM (b. ca. 1888) immigrated to the U.S. in 1909 listing his wife JENTE RANBAM as living in UMAN. Itzig lists Uman as his last residence and place of birth (possibly SARNY).

He also lists my great great grandfather S.A. Krone (from Teplyk) as a cousin. The manifest is attached (see row 9).

I cannot find anything about Itzig or the Ranbam family in the United States or elsewhere. I would be grateful for any information in order to determine the relationship between the two.

My mother was in the Jewish Orphanage in Pinsk, Poland between 1920 and 1924. I am trying to find her
real family name.  Her first names were SORAH BASHA,  but I don’t know her real family name.
I believe her details are in the archives relating to the children who were in the Pinsk Jewish Orphanage ,
and these archives are stored in Brest or Minsk.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The SSDI information I have found gives Leopold Hoschander's last address as the US Consulate in Moroni, Comoros. When Leopold emigrated to the US, he gave his profession as a salesman working in the field of egg produce. There is no record of his moving on into a diplomatic career. Can anyone kindly explain what this could mean?

Meanwhile, in trying to access more information about Leopold's death, having checked several years' worth of the reports online of the deaths of US citizens, I then sent an inquiry to the National Archives, and was informed that death-related information must be sought from the place where he died, i.e., the "appropriate state, territory, or local bureau of vital statistics". They kindly gave me this link http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/w2w.htm to begin that search. However, there does not seem to be an option to request anything about deaths that occurred outside US sovereign territory. All suggestions for further research options gratefully received!

I do not know the situation in Austria, but in Germany all Jews were eventually obliged to register with the  Jewish Community, including Jewish women who were married to non Jewish Germans.  For the history in detail there is the excellent book by Beate Meyer, "A Fatal Balancing Act, The Dilemma of the Reich Association of Jews in Germany".
Nazi Officials and the Gestapo did indeed try to keep up to date records of all Jews. The  Jewish census of 16 May 1939 was the basis of this. In my own family the only  unrecorded Jew was one who had never been a member of any synagogue nor any Jewish organisation and left Germany before 1939.

A further example of Jews who avoided registration is the autobiographical novel  by Ralph Giordano, Ralph, Die Bertinis. This was not translated into English but was the basis for a German TV series which may possibly be on line and have English sub titles.

My grandparents Jacob Morris and Minnie Rivke Genis emigrated to the
US about 1891 according to their naturalization records. In 1901 they
apparently made a visit back to Ukraine (then still Poland I
believe). They must have been traveling on Russian/Polish passports
as my grandfather did not file a Declaration of Intent for US
citizenship until 1918. Is it possible to obtain copies of their
Russian passport or their application for a passport? I have not been
able to find any US arrival records for them in 1891. They emigrated
from Dubno just after marrying. Their Naturalization Petition
indicates that they arrived from Rotterdam, Holland.

Hi all,
I have a list of relatives that my grandparents stayed in touch with when they went to Israel and she came to the US. The note with the above relative is that they are a cousins from Szatmar, so they would have to be related to my grandmother, Etel (Elsie) Stauber or my grandfather, Mayer (Miklosh) Farkas, as both families had links to that area. I am trying to figure out how they are related to either side of my family.

My candlesticks are quite similar, and I know for a fact that they were brought over from Bialystok in about 1895. However, if you Google these items you'll find a Judaica website that has photos and dates for many candlesticks that look like this. Mine unscrew at the bottom, as did others, and they were cast.

I have a handwritten note that Elchanan Livenberg's wife was a first cousin to my grandmother, Etel (Elsie) Stauber (married name Farkas). I don't have her first name or if her last name was the same as my grandmother's, Stauber (also spelled Stober or Stojber, or in Israel, Shtauber). My grandmother passed away years ago but I found this note recently. She kept in touch after the war when they went to Israel and she was sent here before the war. I have pictures of the Livenberg family, they had twins, a boy and a girl and Mrs. Livenberg would send my grandmother notes and pictures. I would love to find them and be in touch or just know her name. My grandmother's family lived in Viseu de Jos (Also Visso) and the surrounding towns.
