A very interesting workshop will start next week - The Study of
Pinkassim. It is organized by the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People. They have asked people to register through email. The email is on their website. It is a greater opportunity for those of us (in Israel) doing projects to hear this series. Luckily the four lectures in July are after the conference in Paris. https://cahjp.huji.ac.il/content/workshop-pinkassim Rose Feldman Israel Genealogy Research Association

Vienna probate records
#austria-czech
Bob Lenk
I recently wrote to the "MA 8" in Vienna to request some probate
records, as I have done several times in the past. A few things were different this time: 1. In the past I always received a reply by mail, with an invoice and instructions for payment to their bank account. This time they replied by emailing a PDF image of a letter. The letter lists the results (which records were or were not found), and offers me a CD-ROM with the records. The cost of the CD-ROM is 63 Euro for six files (which sounds rather high). The letter closes with the sentence, "Eine Rechnung legen wir bei." However no invoice or payment instructions are included. Before I email them asking for further instructions, I wanted to check whether anyone has experience with their new processes. 2. They said that two of the files are not in their archives, but held by courts in Vienna. Does anyone have experience getting records from either of these courts (and would you share that experience)? - Handelsgericht Wien (1901 death, Hernals XVII) - Landesgericht f=FCr Zivilrechtssachen (1931 death, Hietzing XIII) 3. There are 6 people whose records they say "liegen in den genannten Best=E4nden des Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchivs nicht ein." They list specific record numbers for these files (such as "Bezirksgericht Hernals, 4A 126/07"). Is there a way to obtain these records directly from the courts, or does this means the files no longer exist? Many thanks for any help you can give. Bob Lenk Greeley, Colorado, USA

IKG data via familysearch.org
#austria-czech
leah9knud@...
I have tried repeatedly to get access to the IKG data now online at familysearch.org.
However, all I can get is a large page which, although I keep reducing, does not show any arrows or other normal navigation mechanisms to get >from this first page to following pages. All I get is a black page with a number and I cannot navigate further. I am accessing this using my Firefox browser. Can someone please advise me what I am doing wrong and how to easily view these records. I have so many I want to check out - for instance I was looking for the birth record of my late step-Father's Mother, Malvine Weiss Zipper, who was born in Vienna 22.04.1888 - as I was trying to find out her Mother's maiden name. There must be a way of navigating through these records, but I cannot see or find any navigation bars or arrows. Could this be a problem with Firefox? Or is my aging brain playing tricks on me? Thanks for any advice. Lorraine Bertelsen Boho, Downunder

Gesher Galicia Luncheon - "Revisiting the Holocaust through Film: In Darkness and In Light" Tuesday, July 17 with Agenieszka Holland
#austria-czech
Pamela Weisberger
MODERATOR NOTE: This message came in after the prior one was approved and distributed.
Dear List Moderator: I've revised my original posting sent earlier today. Please post this one, instead of the earlier one if possible, but delete this top line if you can. Thanks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Researchers: If you are attending the IAJGS conference in Paris coming up in a few weeks, but haven't bought a ticket to the Gesher Galicia luncheon yet, here's some information about the program: Our luncheon takes place on Tuesday, July 17 at 12:30PM and the presentation is entitled: "Revisiting the Holocaust through Film: In Darkness and In Light." Our special speaker will be the accomplished film and television director, Agnieszka Holland. Her most recent film, "In Darkness," was the official 2012 Foreign Language Academy Award nominee for Poland this year and is based on a true story by Robert Marshall in the book, "In the Sewers of Lwow." The action is set in German-occupied Poland during World War II, where a Polish thief hides a group of Jewish refugees, ultimately saving their lives while risking his own. The film will screen at the conference on Monday evening. Ms. Holland will the challenges of portraying the Lvov ghetto in 1943 -- and its social-political context -- contrasted with the lives of the story's protagonists. She will also talk about the universal dimension of Holocaust stories: how to achieve accuracy and authenticity -- and avoid sentimentality -- while still making an emotional impact on the audience. She will also talk about her earlier films, "Europa, Europa,"based on the true story of a young German Jew, Solomon Perel, who survived the Holocaust, just after Kristallnacht, by falling in with the Nazis, and her 1985 film (also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film) "Angry Harvest," a German production about a Jewish woman on the run in World War II, and the changes in artistic interpretations of the Holocaust during the twenty-seven span between her works. Ms. Holland, who was born in Warsaw to a Catholic mother and a Jewish father, both politically active, will also discuss her personal ties to the subject matter. There will be ample time for Q & A. One cannot attend the luncheon talk without buying a ticket for the luncheon. The cost is 29 Euros. No exceptions! To add the luncheon to your existing conference registration, log into the website: http://www.paris2012.eu - and click on "Registration" OR go directly to this page: http://www.paris2012.eu/products And under SIG/BOF heading click on Galicia or scroll down until you reach the Gesher Galicia Luncheon tab. Click on the blue "add to cart" button, then check out, and pay. You will have to log in as an "Existing Customer," at that point, to make sure the luncheon ticket shows up in your bag when you arrive to register, so have your conference registration log-in information handy. This luncheon presentation is not just for Galician, Polish, Ukrainian and Holocaust researchers, but for those curious about the artistic challenges of portraying the true stories of the Shoah on the screen. We look forward to welcoming you to our luncheon. Pamela Weisberger President, Gesher Galicia pweisberger@... (Note: I do not yet know if this luncheon talk will be recorded. It very well may be. Please check the conference website after the conference for that information.)

Romanian Researchers!
#romania
Rosanne Leeson
Dear All,
Judging >from some email messages I have recently received it is time for the usual warning about unrequested approaches >from individuals who claim to be professional researchers in Romania, who see a posting asking for information about a certain family, or town records, and offer to help. And that includes those who post their services to the SIG. Due to the poor economy in Romania there are those who are desperately seeking to increase their personal income, at your expense. The few legitimate professionals do *not* use this approach. Should you receive such a message volunteering services, please contact the Co-Coordinators of this SIG *before* replying to them in any way, for more information. Dear colleagues
Many many thanks to Tom, Bob and Wolf-Erich for providing me with the birth details/record of my step-Father's Mother, Malvine WEISS ZIPPER. I now know her Mother's maiden name, which I have been seeking for many years now. I still do not know why I cannot get the LDS site to work for the Vienna records - although I have never had any problems with any previous searches on this site. Again, many many thanks to everyone.
