BYCHOWSKY & BISHOW - Rechitza, Ekaterinoslav, Kiev, New Orleans, Norfolk and Baltimore
#belarus
mlbishow@...
Dear Cousins:
I have begun to intensify my research on my husband's paternal family. Since at least 1919, they have used the name BISHOW, but the records in the US show that the original name was BYCHOWSKY. The first immigrant that I am aware of is Jossel BYCHOWSKY, also know as Joseph Jesse BISHOW. Here is what I know about the family: My husband's grandfather was Jossel BYCHOWSKY, born in Rechitza, Russa (Now in Belarus) on May 15, 1875. His parents were Morris (probably Meir) and Ethel. He arrived in New York City on the ship Philadelphia from Southampton, England on March 26, 1905. According to the manifest, he was a cabinet maker. Prior to coming to the US, he lived in Kiev. He was destined to join his cousin J. Richman, 710 Transport Street in New Orleans. I have found that his name varies on different document, as does the year of his birth (1873, 1874, 1875, or 1876). Variant spellings of his first name are Jossel, Yossel, and Joseph. His last name is also spelled in various ways as BYCHOWSKY, BIKOWSKY, an with the W replaced with a V On his Naturalization papers, he used the Anglicized name Joseph Jesse BISHOW. He became a citizen on May 12, 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland. He died in Baltimore on September 25, 1936. Yossel's wife and my husband's grandmother was Scheine BYCHOWSKY, she was born in Ekaterinoslav, Russia (now in Ukraine) on May 10, 1876. We believe that her maiden name was PETROSHANSKY. She arrived in New York City with 4 children on the ship Statendam >from Rotterdam on January 3, 1906. According to the manifest, she was destined to join her husband at 1050 Carondelet Street in New Orleans. On her husband's naturalization papers, her name is Anglicized to Jennie BISHOW. She died in Baltimore on August 4, 1962. Jossel and Scheine had 6 children who were know to live to adulthood. They were Sol, Rae (Rachel), Lena (Mitzi), Jack, Meyer, and Robert. My husband's father and the fifth child of Jossel and Scheine Bychowsky was Meyer Bychowsky . According to hi father's Petition for Naturalization He was born in New Orleans on November 23, 1906. He was variously known as Meyer, Myer, Meir and Myron. Although he was born in the US, when his father became a naturalized citizen, Meyer was listed on the Petition for Naturalization as having been born in New Orleans. He married Lillian SOMMERS and resided in Baltimore for his entire adult life. He died on March 15, 1994. During all of his life, Myron used his birth date as November 13, 1910, so when my husband tried to get his birth certificate, there was no record. Looking for specific information on these individuals, including relatives and any documentation of the family in Rechitza, Ekaterinoslav, Kiev, New Orleans, Norfolk or Baltimore. Here's hoping that you are having a sweet Pesach, Marlene Marlene Bishow President, Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington MODERATOR NOTE: Please reply privately

History of the Bnai David Synagogue Southfield, Michigan
#general
Sue
I have a postcard that my Grandfather sent to my father dated 1968,
which shows a picture of this Shul, the address being Nine Mile and Southfield Roads. My Grandfather was visiting the States and his comments on the postcard were "this is the synagogue your great grandfather founded". I have not been able to find anything about the origins of this Shul, but would love to be able to prove that this was indeed the case. I am aware that the Shul has since moved. My Great Great Grandfather's surname was RABINOWITZ, although I am not completely sure of his first name - possibly Schmuel or Schmaelick. Can anyone point me in the direction of further relevant information please? Please respond privately. Sue Sinkinson Bournemouth, UK

Good morning,
What am I doing wrong? I have searched the 1940 Census and scrolled through many pages without any luck. Using the Steve Morse website for Jefferson County, Birmingham, Alabama: Using the ED's I have >from the 1930 Census I got the equivalent for the 1940 Census then I searched all the pages Using their address >from 1945 (which I have >from WW11 Enlistment records) I got basically the same ED's, so searched again, and couldn't find any trace of them. Did I miss a step? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Jacqueline Davis Ottawa, Canada jdavis318@...

Could anyone please tell me how accurate the dates are in the Lithuania database?
I am looking for any records of Tobias and Faiga FRIEDMAN/FREEDMAN in the Kovno area. In the Luthuania Marriage and Divorces database, I have found the marriage of: Tuviash FRIDMAN and Feiga ZUNDEL in Kedainiai, Kaunas. But the MARRIAGE date is: 5/2/1881 and my Tobias and Faiga FRIEDMAN/FREEDMAN would have married about 1840-1854. Could this date be wrong ? Thank you Monica McMullin Liverpool monicamcmullin@...
