Hello Richard,
My Jewish Great-Great Grandfather married my Catholic Great-Great Grandmother (in Russia, now Ukraine). In order to marry her he had to be baptized as a Catholic and his name was changed from Chaim to Joseph. I found this information in Catholic Church Records as well as the record of their marriage and the baptisms of their children. I hope this may help you, Rebecca Kraatz

So far everyone who has replied has stated that "ermordert" (ermordet in current German) should be translated in this case as killed. That is, the oxen killed Scheier GRÜNEBAUM. Thanks again.
I did receive a reply stating that until the eighteenth century in Europe animals were sometimes tried in court. This was a bit later, 1823, but I doubt that the oxen were actually tried. A Wikipedia article was quoted, but not by name. -- Ralph N. Baer RalphNBaer@... Washington, DC

Sally said she never received a response from Arolsen. When I wrote to them years ago they replied they had nothing. Now that their materials are online a cousin found 28 pages of documents that broke several brick walls including learning that my mgm had 3 sisters not 2 and their names, including one's married name, and her son who immigrated to Israel in 1947. It’s always worth looking again especially since the materials are online at no cost.

Hi,
Was your ancestor born in Galicia? Austria made it very difficult for Jews to register marriages and births. There was a tax involved in the hopes that less Jews would marry and reproduce. Therefore, Jewish records were kept by the community far more than the official state authorities in Galicia. When they needed to transact something that involved the state - say an inheritance - they would register with the result being these much-later-after-the-fact records. For people who understand the basics of DNA testing, especially as it relates to our particular endogamous population, and want to take a deep dive into figuring out mysteries in their own family, Israel's book is a must-read. It is not for beginners though! And to try to replicate his techniques, you will need to talk as many known relatives as possible into DNA testing.

better intrpertation. Spandau is a suburb of Berlin.
