Lita is in a border area. It is now part of Belarus (since 1945) but has also been part of Lithuania (1918-1945) and also Suwalki gubernia in Poland in the19th century and up to WW1. My late cousin's middle name was Lita, as some of the family came from there when it was part of Suwalki.

Protections? I am not clear on what those might be.
Given the history of the 20th century, I am not about to fill in a box marked "race" on any form. I have always lived in the US and have felt fairly safe here, but I understand so did our people in Germany once. ========== Robert Roth Kingston, NY rroth@...

I checked around Pabianice and there are no towns with that name near by. There is a Lukow near the Belarus border, where many Jews were transported to during the 2nd WW.

Hi Rick,
Those things can be check in the "Adoph Lehmann's allgemeiner Wohnungs-Anzeiger (Adoph Lehmann's general appartment directory) at https://www.digital.wienbibliothek.at/wbrobv/periodical/titleinfo/5311. I checked 1908 (https://www.digital.wienbibliothek.at/wbrobv/periodical/titleinfo/229444), Volume 2 for you. Page 377 you find Max Gans-Schiller, however, it is not clear if this is the address of an appartment, his shop, or both. Anyway the address is Porzellangasse 16 which is 300m away from Berggasse 19 where Sigmund Freud lived. It could be that somebody mixed "near to the house of Dr. Freud" with "in the house of Dr. Freud. Or the given address was just the shop and the Glas-Schiller family did not want to make their private address public. Kindest regards, Alexander Burstein BA Historian

My maiden name is Hantz and I was told that it could have been spelled Hanz. My GG family was from Hungary/Czechoslovakia. My family is Jewish and we always thought that our last name sounded German and not Hungarian. I heard stories that my Great Grandfather's family may have originally been from Austria. I have hit so many road blocks trying to find info on this side of my family. Good luck with your search.

Origin of the word 'Peruvian' to describe jewws on the doamond nad goldfields
#southafrica
#general
geraldine.auerbach@...
I am wondering is anyone knows the origin of the term 'Peruvian' used by other Jews and those outside the community to describe in a derogatory way some of the Jews newly arrived on the diamond of goldfields in South Africa at the turn of the last century 1870 – 1930? Some have suggested it was short for a ‘Polish and Russian Union – a club that originated in Kimberley. But I don’t know of any refence to such a club or union. Has anyone any ideas?

Race is an artificial construct, though obviously many people have a
strong ethnic identity. Vis a vis our endogamous population: you can search "are Jews white?" to get a whole range of opinions. My own observation/experience as a lifelong resident of the United States: POC see most Jews as white; white people with origins in northern Europe/UK -- ie most "white" Americans -- see Jews are "other" -- not quite white, not POC. I'd be interested to know if Jews living in other countries have had similar experiences. When I got my census form a year ago, I didn't hesitate to mark my race as "other" and write in "Jewish." I was fascinated to learn that most of my Jewish friends -- without any of us discussing it -- had done something similar! No one seemed to feel comfortable checking any of the standard race boxes. Belinda Dishon
hi thank you for any help offered. I need help translating the in between bits of this birth record. I have successfully worked out most of the record however it is severl words in the part that has me stumped.
I believe the beginning of this part of a birth record says 'Beile Jacker nee Prager from Snowicz'. Then there are several words I can't make out??? Followed by '??? daughter of Leib and Sary/Sara? Prager from ??? (possibly Remizowce?) and the last few words are challenging. -- Belinda Dishon Melbourne Australia bdishon1@... PECZENIK JACKER PRAGER KATZ KURZER

I just learned that my great-grandparents Max and Eugenie Gans-Schiller may have lived next door to Freud in Vienna, sometime before 1910.

Hi All!
Does anyone know of towns possibly named Paolona (Russia) and Lita (Russia)? One of my relatives listed Paolono as his birth town on his Declaration of Intent, and Lita as that of his wife. I'm guessing that Lita, Russia could be Lida, Belarus; but I am not certain. Document is attached. Thanks in advance!! -- Amy Mitchell

Re: Info on Jewish refugees in Central Asia during the War

Laurence Broun
I found a book about a refugee from my grandparents shtetl of Mizocz who fled to Tashkent during the war. You can Google the book ... Flight to Tashkent: The Desperate Journey of Holocaust Survivors Yosef Mednik and Feiga Geldi Mednik.
This individual also served in the Polish forces in the Red Army. During the time he was in the military, his wife served on an agricultural commune. Also, I have a cousin whose family spent time in Tashkent after fleeing Latvia. I've been to Tashkent myself for business and the weather is fine ... sure beats Siberia. I have the impression it was one of the better places to end up for Jews fleeing Eastern Europe. -- Larry (Itzik Leib) Broun Washington, DC | USA e-mail: Laurencebroun@...
