Hi All- I posted a document in Russian on Viewmate that a researcher found for me
in Odessa. It may be the first marriage of my grandfather, Isaac Livshitz, in Odessa. I am told his town is listed as Spinensk(y). Does anyone have any idea where that would be? I can't find it on Town Finder. Here is the link to the document. There are some tiny notes written in Yiddish, in addition to the Russian. Please respond privately-Thanks http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=21872 Marilyn Okonow, Needham, MA Researching LIVSHITZ, ZACHARIN, PLAGOFF, ARONSON- Polatsk, Belarus; LIVSHITZ, Odessa (1901-1910) |

Contiguous residency for citizenship in 1899
#general
jel <jel@...>
Our family has some evidence that a male relative immigrated to NY in 1894 with the
intention of staying only for a few years, but returned to Russia in 1896 because his two young children, left there with his wife, died. He then returned in 1897, landing in Boston but heading back to NY. The ship manifest for the return trip gives the name of a "Brother-in-Law" as his Boston contact. This ostensible brother-in-law's name is unknown to the family. We suspect that our relative, on his return, had made up his mind to remain here and seek citizenship, and may have thought that his trip back to Russia would reset the clock on the required residency period for citizenship (he arrived in Boston under his Russian, not under the Americanized name he used in NY). He may have wanted to be as invisible as possible, and the named Boston contact person could have been "borrowed". Our relative filed his first papers for citizenship in April 1899, in NY, stating his 1894 arrival, brought his wife over to NY in Dec. 1899, and was granted citizenship in 1903. How common was it for an immigrant to hide his leaving the U.S. and subsequent re-entry because he wanted to maintain a contiguous residency period -- and, if he was feigning a first time arrival on re-entry, did he have to provide proof that his stated sponsor actually knew him? Gold's book on Jewish Communities in Bohemia in 1930s, I am stuck on two terms: 1) The names of members of the Committee are given and these are followed by: "The treasurer is Adalbert Weil, Senior Inspector of ths St-B i.R." I wonder if anyone knows what "St-B i.R."means? 2) There is also reference to the way in which the leader of the Community "dedicated himself to the Ronsperg Killah and to the synagogue". Is it reasonable to suppose "Killah" might mean "Kehilah"? Thanks if anyone can advise. Rob Pearman St Albans, UK Researching: HUTTER, HARTMANN, GUTWILLIG, KLAUBER, POPPER |
