MOD NOTES: 1. This discussion has wandered off topic but the following
message is approved to bring a new GerSIG contributor and a few related
family names into our archives.
2. Lists of names being researched must include the towns of
origin and should also include the submitter's JewishGen Researcher Code
number and a note that the names & towns have been entered in the JGFF. MOD 1

Fellow Gersiggers,

My maternal grandmother, Ida MARX, emigrated >from Hall/Steinbach (near
Schwabisch Hall), Baden-Wuertemberg to Hot Springs, Arkansas in the late
1880s, where she married my maternal grandfather, Cyrus LAZARUS. In addition
to my mother, the couple had two sons, Sid and Bill LAZARUS, both of whom
prospered in the shoe business in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

In the late 1930s, Jews who'd remained in Germany needed sponsors to leave.
The LAZARUS brothers responded positively: one of their sponsored refugees
was a boy >from Mainz, Peter SALOMON. Peter's brother, Paul, was sent to
England, where he remained and eventually raised a family. Paul's boyhood
Stammbaum is/was part of a display of such documents at the Jewish Museum Berlin.

After graduating >from high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Peter, who Americanized
his name to Peter STEELE, sought in vain to join the US Army. Refused as an
'enemy alien', he decided to go to Canada to join the Royal Canadian Forces.

When he was turned away at the border crossing, he apparently attempted
to swim >from the US side to Windsor, Ontario, and failed.

The below-cited article is >from a Tulsa newspaper reporting his death.
The 'uncle' referred to is Sid LAZARUS, more accurately a cousin. This
story was told to me by Peter's brother, Paul, when I met him in England
in 1963, but it was only recently that I found the clipping in a package
of items originally belong to Bill LAZARUS, who died in 1968, and have
shared it with both English and American relatives.

Dear Bessarabers,

I hope everyone who planned to go to Jewish Genealogical conference in
Paris, has already been registered. The discounted fee for the registration
will not be available after March 31.

For details and registration, please go to http://www.paris2012.eu .
The complete program with Bessarabian events can be found at
http://www.paris2012.eu/events. I hope to see many of you at our meetings
and SIG fair.

Our Bessarabia group has a new presentation - Vincent Vagman on July 17,
11:20am with the lecture: Between genealogy and history: the
contextualization of characters. Application to the bessarabian case.

Bessarabians, please come to our following events:

Sunday July 15, 02:00pm, (Pont des Arts A)
SIGs and BOFs' fair.

Monday July 16, 04:40pm, (Louis Armstrong A & B). Bessarabia SIG meeting.
The meeting is open to anyone with roots in the region historically known as
Bessarabia, an area now comprising the Moldova Republic and parts of
Ukraine. At the end of the 19th century and before the War, Bessarabia had
significant Jewish presence.
The Bessarabia SIG was organized at the end of 2011 to help people in their
Bessarabian genealogical research. We will discuss the progress of the
multiple projects started by the SIG members and many future proposed
projects. We will also talk about connections made by Bessarabia SIG with
Jewish communities in Moldova, and with non-Jews interested in helping Jews
to find fragments of the lost Jewish life in their towns.

Tuesday July 17, 10:20am, (Louis Armstrong A & B), Yefim Kogan
Estate and other categories of Jews in Bessarabia, Russia in 19th century
The Law of Russian Empire of 1818 obliged Bessarabian Jews to be registered
in one of several estates - Merchants, Middle Class (Petty Bourgeois,
Tradesmen, Townsmen) or Farmers (Land-workers, Peasants). Similar Laws were
enforced by Russia in Belarus, Ukraine, Novo Russia and other regions, at
the end of the 18th century, beginning of the 19th century. What did these
estates mean to Jews? What privileges did these estates grant? How could
Jews change their estates, if at all? The other categories of Jews were:
Honorary Citizens (hereditary, private), Nobility, Colonists, Foreigners,
and Military personal, State-Owned Settlers, Burlak Temporary worker.
Information was taken >from Vital & Revision Lists records of Bessarabia,
Bessarabian Annual Book-Calendar, the Governor Office, 1862-1914, etc.

Advice to all those who seek Birth, Marriage and Death records from
Romania.

Do NOT us the American term "Vital Records" this is NOT understood in
European English, and certainly not in Romania.

Ask for Civil Records (starei civile) for genealogy, and state the type that
you want, Birth (nascuti) Marriage (casatoriti) Death (morti)

The local registry office belonging to the municipality usually have the
records for the last 100 years, those that are older are usually housed in
the County State Archive.
The address of all such municipalities and archives can be found on the

Write in simple clear standard English, don't use American terminology,
