The meeting is open to anyone with roots in the region historically known as
Bessarabia, an area now comprising the Moldova Republic and parts of
Ukraine. At the end of the 19th century and before the War, Bessarabia had
significant Jewish presence.
The Bessarabia SIG was organized at the end of 2011 to help people in their
Bessarabian genealogical research. We will discuss the progress of the
multiple projects started by the SIG members and many future proposed
projects. We will also talk about connections made by Bessarabia SIG with
Jewish communities in Moldova, and with non-Jews interested in helping Jews
to find fragments of the lost Jewish life in their towns.

Estate and other categories of Jews in Bessarabia, Russia in 19th century
The Law of Russian Empire of 1818 obliged Bessarabian Jews to be registered
in one of several estates - Merchants, Middle Class (Petty Bourgeois,
Tradesmen, Townsmen) or Farmers (Land-workers, Peasants). Similar Laws were
enforced by Russia in Belarus, Ukraine, Novo Russia and other regions, at
the end of the 18th century, beginning of the 19th century. What did these
estates mean to Jews? What privileges did these estates grant? How could
Jews change their estates, if at all? The other categories of Jews were:
Honorary Citizens (hereditary, private), Nobility, Colonists, Foreigners,
and Military personal, State-Owned Settlers, Burlak Temporary worker.
Information was taken >from Vital & Revision Lists records of Bessarabia,
Bessarabian Annual Book-Calendar, the Governor Office, 1862-1914, etc.

Ask for Civil Records (starei civile) for genealogy, and state the type that
you want, Birth (nascuti) Marriage (casatoriti) Death (morti)

The local registry office belonging to the municipality usually have the
records for the last 100 years, those that are older are usually housed in
the County State Archive.
The address of all such municipalities and archives can be found on the
internet.

Write in simple clear standard English, don't use American terminology,
offer to pay for the official service.

(definitive city, original family name and members, etc). The death
record of my oldest known ancestor in America says that he is from
Goshlin, Germany, which we believe may be Murowana Goslina, Poland,
today.

His naturalization papers show that he renounced his allegiance to the
King of Prussia. When he came to NY >from Germany, his family used the
name HIMMELBEIN. Once arriving in the USA, they used the family name
LEVY instead. They traveled a few times back and forth to Germany,
which again the name Himmelbein was used again.

Between the 1840 and 1900, there were about 10 different HIMMELBEIN's
that left >from a port in Hamburg, Germany and came to NY, NY USA.
We assume that they are probably related, but they too never seemed to
use that name again. Any help is greatly appreciated.

place to look up all the gergelys and zsolts and tunders. (it isn't
specifically hungarian, by the way.)

generally better etymological information, and the "popularity"
statistics, which include separate stats for hungary, are
interesting. (and a bit puzzling - "levente" and "boglarka" are
listed as 3rd and 5th most popular names for boys and girls
respectively, in 2009, which is just weird.)

one other clever feature is the "family tree" for names, which
displays variants and related names. (check out the "chart" for
erzsebet, for example.)

I have a question for those of you with ancestry in Burgenland. Sometime between 1648 and 1653,
Count Franz von Nadasdy a feudal lord in Burgenland, permitted Sephardic Jews to establish a settlement in
Neufeld. These Jews had been expelled >from Spain/Portugal and came to Burgenland via Holland. After the
dissolution of Neufeld’s Jewish community in 1739, the former residents settled in Mattersdorf and other
nearby communities, where they were all assigned the surname NEUFELD to differentiate them >from the
members of the original communities with residency rights.

There is a curious story told in the Neufeld branch of my family that we are related to Don Isaac Abarbanel,
the Jewish communal leader and financial adviser to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain at the time
of Jewish expulsion >from Spain.

I am wondering if anyone else with roots in Burgenland shares similar stories and/or if anyone knows of a
history that has been written about the Neufeld Jewish community.
