The December Galitzianer is published! (And GG membership update) #galicia

Pamela Weisberger

The December issue of "The Galitzianer" has just been published.
If you get electronic delivery you should have already received it
via email, and for those of you with snail mail subscriptions, you
should have your issues within a week or so.

This is the last issue for the 2011 membership year -- a "bonus
issue" because we've extended the membership year to end in
December, with the 2012 membership year commencing on
January 1. The first "The G" issue of 2012 will be published in
March. If you have ideas for articles or wish to write for "The G"
please contact the editor Janice Sellars at: janicemsj@...

You must be a member of Gesher Galicia to received this
quarterly publication. Our membership renewals went out via
snail mail last month and are due by December 31st. If you have
not yet renewed, please do so! If you would like to join for the
first time, we welcome you! And if you want to make a
contribution to one of our many projects, or to our general fund,
you can add these on when you renew or go here for more info:
http://www.jewishgen.org/galicia/join_gg.html
(And thank you to all of you who have so generously contributed
already. Your donations continue to support our research and our
new "All Galicia Database.")

Beginning in 2012, all participants in the Cadastral Map,
Landowner, Voter and School Records Projects will be required
to be GG members. (Please remember that subscribing to this
discussion group does not make you a member of GG.)

More info on our upcoming plans will be posted soon. If you
have written to me with questions about these projects, please
know that I will get back to you in January and I appreciate your
patience. It's been a busy fall.

Here are some of the articles in the December 2011 issue of
"The G":

"Memories of Bolechow" - Friedrich Rhur
"New Gesher Galicia Database Solves a Mystery and Presents a
New One" - Ellen Korpi
"Born in the USSR" - Janette Silverman
"My Trip to Ukraine" - Chana (Hanna) Harmelin-Palmon
"Gesher Galicia Landowner Maps and Records Inventory Update"
- Brian Lenius
"Research Corner: August to December Report >from Vienna,
Lviv & Krakow" - Pamela Weisberger

Note that on page 2 of this issue is a scan of the signatures of
Jewish residents of Tarnow who filed a complaint with the
government in Vienna regarding slander, and on page 3 there is
a full page scan >from first page of the list of (Jewish) teachers at
German-Jewish schools in Galicia organized by Kreis (circle) in
1788-1789. Gesher Galicia has acquired over 400 pages >from the
Staatarchiv in Vienna (similar documents) waiting to be scanned
and inventoried >from a large sampling of towns in Galicia
covering the 18th - 20th centuries. More info on that to come
soon...

If you join Gesher Galicia before the end of the year, you can
also receive this issue. We look forward to an exciting year of
research and discoveries for our members.

Happy holidays to all >from the entire board of Gesher Galicia!

rabbinical family names #galicia

Eli Brauner

Hello all,

In 1781 Emperor Joseph II of Austria promulgated the Edict of
Toleration for the Jews, which established the requirement for
mandatory hereditary surnames. The Jews of Galicia did not adopt
family names until 1785. Family names were then required
throughout the Austrian Empire by the year 1787. But, were
rabbinical families different? Do they use family names earlier to
the Emperor edict?

My interest is mainly in the rabbinical family founders of the
Turei Zahav Synagogue known as Gildene Royze-1581:

Isaac Nachmanowicz and his sons Nachman and Mordechai.
Nachmanowicz is a patronymic name. Later they are referred in
the books-1796- as though their family name is Shcrenzel or
Schrenzelis.

Could it be that the family bear both: patronymic and also
family name?
