BLECHER of Soroca, Bessarbia - my Introduction

Marla Raucher Osborn <osborn@...>
Hello fellow members,
I am Marla Raucher Osborn, a retired California attorney and a member of the Board of Directors of Gesher Galicia. I have spent most of the last decade living abroad (England, France, Buenos Aires, Italy, Ukraine), and most recently, spent 5 months in Lviv so I could research and visit the Galicia towns >from my paternal side of my family. On my maternal side, we have family >from Bessarbia; specifically, BLECHER >from Soroca. In 2011, I traveled into Moldova and spent a few days visiting the town and meeting with Simon Wexler, who is a local businessman and the head of today's small but active Jewish community in Soroca. He kindly showed me the synagogue, his office, and Soroca's one remaining Jewish cemetery. We together combed through his cemetery log of some of those buried there (typed in cyrillic), and although found some surnames for BLECHER in the cemetery, I have not yet been able to make the exact connection. My "report" with photos on this 2011 trip (in the fall) is on the Bessarbia SIG webpage, kindly posted by your leader (and my dear friend), Yefim Kogan. My great grandparents Yakov and Chaje BLECHER came to the US in 1914 landing in Boston with their two youngest children, Artur and Amie (Malke/Mollie), my grandmother. Their five older sons all arrived before them; namely, Meir (Meyer), Sylvan (Sam), Shake (Sol), Yosel (Joseph), and Mordechai (Marty). They then settled in Chicago and changed their surname to HELLER! I have never learned where they got the name HELLER. Sadly, Chaje was hit and killed by a truck in downtown Chicago in 1930 (a year after her husband's death). I recently obtained her medical coroner's report. I have quite a bit of records >from US sources for this family (I have been the family genealogist for many years), but virtually nothing >from foreign sources. This is how I met Yefim at the IAJGS conference in Phildelphia in 2009 - he translated some Russian passport documents for Mordechai BLECHER! I continue to focus most of my time and research on my Galicia paternal family, and specifically on the town of Rohatyn. I am lecturing on this town and my 2011 research in Los Angeles in 2 weeks, then will be at the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow for 3 months beginning mid-March. I will also be at the annual IAJGS conference in Paris next July - hope to meet some of you there! Where is Osowo in Kiev Gubernia?
#ukraine
Linda Shefler
My cousin told me his mother was born in Osowo, in Kiev gubernia about 1892.
There is no such place as Osowo in all of Ukraine that I could find! I know how much you all enjoy convoluted, confusing stories, so here is another one for you! Sarah BORNSTEIN (b. 1892 Osowo?) indicated on her Fall River marriage license that her parents were Benjamin BRAUNSTEIN and IDA CUPIT. Her sister, Bessie BORNSTEIN (~1892 Osowo?) indicated on her marriage license that her parents were Barnet BORNSTEIN and Hida KOPIT. A perfect example of the consistency that we deal with in our research! I have several reasons for wanting to get this all straight: KOPIT-CUPIT-KOPYT, etc. is a name that is found repeatedly within my NULMAN family. I don't know Hida-Ida father's name and would like to know where she fits into the KOPIT family. Benjamin-Barnet BORNSTEIN-BRAUNSTEIN is the son of an unknown father, but his mother was Toby NULMAN. Toby was my 2nd great grandaunt. There are several different family connections here that I still need to sort out. Benjamin had a sister Rose who married Wolf CHARNOW of Skvira. They settled in Providence and then moved to Brooklyn. There was another sister Ethel, who married Nathan KANOFSKY; they settled in Chicago. My questions are: Does anyone have any idea of what Osowo might really be? It might be near Ivnitsa or Fastov, as that is where the NULMAN family was from. I looked in JGFF for possible BORNSTEIN-BRAUNSTEIN researchers that might be possible connections, but couldn't find anyone I thought might work. Is anyone familiar with the above mentioned families >from the area of Fastov, Skvira, Belaya Tserkov or Ivnitsa? I would like to know if the name was BORNSTEIN or BRAUNSTEIN, what the given name of the father of Benjamin, Rose and Ethel was, where they were actually from, and if anyone is familiar with other descendants >from these families. As always, your help is greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance and wishing everyone a lovely week. Linda Silverman Shefler Hod Ha Sharon linda.shefler@... |

Wishatia? in Ukraine

Does the town of Wishatia ring a bell for anyone? For context - this appears
as the place of birth for a great uncle who left the area in 1908. This is typed in 2 different areas of his naturalization papers. Wishatia, Austria This family supposedly came >from either Husyatin or Tarnopol which are now in Ukraine. But, so far, I can't figure out which town or portion of a town this might be. Some possibilities? (village) Vyshnivchyk or (Urban-type settlement) Vyshnivets or .... Wachuty (this town seems too far away, though) Debbie Raff California |

My name is MOLLY AROST STAUB KATZMAN. My Bessarabian connection is my
father Oscar AROST, who emigrated as Usher HARAST in 1920. The town was Servio, Romania on his manifest, although I'm told it's now Dumbraveni, Moldova. This was in Soroki Gubernia, although he often mentioned Bessarabia as well. I've been researching for 30 years. Although we were told the surname was rare, I've gotten as far back as my fifth great-grandfather Markil HARAST, born in 1763 with much help >from Maury KITCES. My biggest problem is my paternal grandfather, Einoch Harast. He emigrated in 1907 and went to Philadelphia where relatives were living. Family lore said he remained for 10 years, but was robbed and hit over the head. He received a steel plate but had amnesia for five years. He never sent for his wife and three grown children. He returned home in 1915 because his father was dying, but he himself died of his previous injuries. I had a terrible time tracking Einoch until HIAS found him returning as Emil, not Enoch as I would have thought. I can't find any other records for him, and would love to know of any medical history. For instance, his two sons had diabetes and is not apparent on his wife's side. My maternal family, BERENSON and GROFFMAN/GRAFFMAN, comes >from Krusnoie in Podolia Gubernia. I Know borders changed often, but I wonder if this is included in Bessarabia. Hello, all,
My family connection to Bessarabia is through my great-grandfather's six younger siblings. My great-grandfather Joyne GORODETSKY, his older sister Etta, and their parents Victor GORODETSKY and Esther Leah SCHNEIDERMAN were >from the Kamanets Podolsky area and moved to Kishinev after my great-grandfather was born. I believe all six of the younger children were born in Kishinev; I have found birth records for five of them. My great-great-grandmother died in November 1908, one month after the birth of her youngest child. My great-great-grandfather remarried in May 1911, to a Sura (I cannot read her last name >from the index entry and have not been able to acquire the full marriage record). Victor GORODETSKY and all but the oldest child emigrated to the United States and settled in the New York City area. The first one to come was my great-grandfather Joyne in 1909; the last to come were the two youngest daughters, who arrived in 1924. Etta married Dovid KARDISH (also >from Kamanets Podolsky) about 1910 and they lived in Khotin. She emigrated with him to Ottawa, Canada, where his family had gone. They emigrated in the 1920's. Victor's second wife did not come with him and no one knows what happened to her. Janice Sellers Oakland, California |

Hello,
I am starting a research project about the Jewish Emigrants >from Czechoslovakia to Belgium in the 1930s and 1940s. I am looking for testimonies and possible family records. There were many Jews >from Czechoslovakia who survived in Belgium and also many who were sent >from Belgium to the concentration camps. There was also a group of young Jewish men of Czechoslovak origin who wanted to fight against Germany 1944 after Belgium was liberated. They were refused by the Belgians authorities and became volunteers in the Czechoslovak army in Great Britain. I will be glad about any information. I had recently posted a query( 2/8/12) for information on Rabbi Vorhand of
Prague and I have received several replies. His son , Rabbi Moshe Vorhand, also replied to me that they are working on an account of his activities. I am attaching two links about Rabbi Vorhand for whoever is interested. My original thought was that he had been involved in some way with arrangements for the shipping of weapons >from Czechoslovakia to Israel. I have been informed that it was unlikely; however, he very much was involved in getting Jews out both before and after the War to Eretz Yisrael and after the war was actively involved with US government representatives and the Czech government in negotiations on behalf of the Jewish community. http://heichalmoshe.com/History.html- has emphasis on his activity inCzechoslovakia http://heichalmoshe.org/history.htm- has emphasis on his activity in US. from all accounts I have received, he was highly regarded and beloved as aspiritual leader and a Talmid Chacham. Bronstein Family <sygaa@...>
Shalom,
I think it is a wonderful idea to introduce ourselves to each other. For all we know, some of us might even discover unknown relatives. I'm Shalom Bronstein of Jerusalem. We've lived in Israel for 25 years. My paternal grandfather Sam (Israel) was born in Kishinev in 1892. His parents were Yaakov Avraham (1867-1929) and Chana Devorah Rochman (1871-1933). Their parents' names were Asher and Reba and Moshe and Tzipora. I found further information about my great-grandparents and their children in the All Romania Database. I learned of children who died very young and found the brit record of my grandfather's brother. The family name in Kishinev was Runstein. I have no idea how or why the family name changed but when my grandfather came to the states with his mother and sister in 1910 they were going to their Bronstein husband/father although their names on the manifest are listed as Runstein. The ship's manifest also supplied me with my great-great grandmother's name along with my great-grandmother's maiden name Rochman. In the column asking for the name of a relative or friend in your place of origin she listed her mother Tzipora Rochman. My great-grandfather and his son Harry (Asher), who used the name Brownstein, came first and the rest of the family followed. My great-aunt told me that after the Pogrom in Kishinev the family left for Odessa. They came to the United States via England. They settled in Philadelphia where I was born and graduated college. I have no idea of the names of my great-grandparents' siblings. (village) Vyshnivchyk or (Urban-type settlement)Vyshnivets" Here's what i did..first i assumed the town might be near Husatyn and Tarnapol so i went to the Community pages and found the info for Husyatin and Tarnapol (227 and 214 miles WSW of Kiev) Then i went to the JewishGen Gazetteer and queried Wishata in the Ukraine. Then i did a Find for WSW, looking for towns in that direction off Kiev. I found only one possibilty: Vashkouts, Vashkoutsi, Vashkovtsy, Vashkivtsi...265 miles WSW of Kiev,81 miles S Tarnopol then I queried Wishata in Eastern Europe... looking for possibilities within 100 miles of tarnopol: Pasatu populated place 48°10' N 26°05' Ukraine 98.2 miles SSE of Ternopil (Tarnopol) Piechoty populated place 50°24' N 21°34' E Poland 187.7 miles WNW of Ternopil (Tarnopol) Posada Leska, populated place 49°29' N 22°20' E Poland145.7 miles W of Ternopil (Tarnopol Wychody populated place 50°40' N 23°09' E Poland 132.3 miles NW of Ternopil (Tarnopol Posada Dolna populated place49°15' N 22°42' E Poland 131.2 miles W of Ternopil (Tarnopol) Bezeda populated place 48°10' N 27°00' E Moldova 115.5 miles SE of Ternopil (Tarnopol alas this doesnt pinpoint the town...but it's information to keep and if you get the town name >from another document, it might connect (someday) happy hunting Phyllis Kramer, NYC & Palm Beach Gardens VP, Education: www.JewishGen.org/education family web site: www.KehilaLinks.JewishGen.org/Krosno/Kramer.htm |
