Birth or Death record of child

Natalie,
I think I may have found Milton. I first looked at the Mt. Zion database. I searched for the name of the society (without any last name entered.) I found Joseph BERNOWSKY, d. 1916, with the Delatitcher society. Next, I searched on stevemorse.org (NYC death index) for Joseph BERNOWSKY, and found Joseph M BERNOWSKY to be a 3 year old that passed in 1916. Acquiring the death cert of Joseph M. BERNOWSKY will give you the parents names and prove or disprove this theory. I bet his middle name is Milton. I've sent this info plus the cert number directly to Natalie. regards, Sherri Bobish Princeton, NJ |

All Galicia Database(AGD) adds surname phonetic matching, & new "towns & locations" page
#general
Asparagirl <asparagirl@...>
We're happy to announce that Gesher Galicia's new All Galicia Database (AGD) has
just released an update. This update adds two major new features and also fixes one small bug, but does not add any new content to the database. (That's coming in the next update, tentatively scheduled for late this month.) Here's the URL: http://search.geshergalicia.org/ Our first major new feature for the AGD is the arrival of Beider-Morse Phonetic Matching for surnames! You can toggle this ability on and off with a checkbox in the search area, but we recommend leaving it on in order to find the greatest number of surname spelling variants. For example, the surname SCHREIER has just nine exact matches in the AGD. Using the AGD's wildcard feature, I can search for "SCHR*R" (with the asterisk acting as the wildcard) and find some more surname variants like SCHREYER. But now with the ability to do phonetic matching, I can find 127 matches in the database, including for surnames like SZRAJER and SRAYER that the wildcard search might have missed. Our sincere thanks go to Steve Morse and Alexander Beider, who not only created the original Beider-Morse Phonetic Matching (BMPM)system, but who wisely chose to release the code as open source. Our thanks also go to Dr. Matthew Pocock >from the UK, a programmer who did the actual porting of Morse and Beider's original PHP code over to java code, and then submitted it to the Apache Foundation's commons-codec team for inclusion. That in turn allowed the integration of BMPM as a new option in Apache Solr, version 3.6 (which is not yet released) and future versions of Solr. (The AGD now runs on a pre-release version of 3.6.) This means that this code is now available for any organization who wants to use it, free of charge. We hope more genealogy organizations and historical groups will take advantage of this new code in the future for their own websites. Our second major feature update to the AGD is the introduction of the new "Towns and Locations" web page, which gives a quick overview of what towns and locations are mentioned in the database. This page will automatically update itself every time we edit or add new content to the site. It lists the top 50 towns and locations by rank, and then also lists every town or location we have in alphabetical order, as long as that location is listed at least three times. Note that the names of the towns and locations have *not* been standardized. They show up on the list just as they show up in the database. Some towns may be mentioned under alternate names; for example, Lemberg, Lwow, and Lviv are different names for the same city, but they each might appear separately in the list, depending on how they were recorded in the original data source. Some of these locations may be very general, such as "Galicia" or "Russia". A few towns may have been misspelled. Finally, some of these towns may have become incorporated into other localities over the years; for example, Zadworna is today a section of the city of Drohobych, Ukraine, and not a standalone town. Basically, we have left this information exactly as it was entered by the transcribers, reflecting the form and spelling in the original records. It's interesting to note how many non-Galician towns and areas show up on the list (i.e. Warszawa (Warsaw), Berlin, Wien (Vienna), New York [!], Russia, etc.) Our ancestors got around... We also made one small bugfix in this release, fixing a problem with paging through multiple results pages if you had done a search with a 'sort" option enabled. Sort order will now persist correctly across multiple pages. Again, the All Galicia Database is online here: http://search.geshergalicia.org/ And our new Towns and Locations page, which is also linked in the footer of the site, is here: http://search.geshergalicia.org/towns.php Enjoy the new features, and happy searching! Our next update, coming soon, will add a whole bunch of new content for several towns, including many mid-19th century homeowners lists >from Galician towns, most of them circa 1858, which were obtained through our multi-year Cadastral Map and Landowners Project at the Lviv archives. We'll also be adding a very special collection of marriage records >from the Tarnopol (Ternopil, Ukraine) Ghetto, >from 1942. - Brooke Schreier Ganz Los Angeles, California |

"Petersburg Cavalry" around 1900

Does anyone know a good source for information about men who served in the [St]
Petersburg Russian Cavalry at the turn of the 20th century? I've just learned that a man I think was my grandfather's brother was discharged >from that unit in 1904. If drafted at the age of 21, his service years would have been 1894-1904. I'm not having any success with search engines on this. Would there be records of place of birth and/ or residence at the time of draft? (Since he was Jewish and the family was observant, I'm assuming he didn't enlist). Joy Weaver Islip, NY USA |

I agree with Joy Weaver that the Fulton History site is a difficult one to search.
If you go on FultonHistory.com and click on enter you get the search screen. If you then click on the FAQ link in the upper right corner, and then scroll down a bit, you'll see "Tips and Solutions"; these provide the researcher with effective researching methodologies and wonderful short cuts happy hunting Phyllis Kramer, New York City, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla V.P.Education, JewishGen Inc: www.JewishGen.org/education Researching (all Galicia) KRAMER, BEIM >from Jasienica Rosielna ...SCHEINER, KANDEL >from Strzyzow & Dubiecko ...LINDNER, EICHEL >from Rohatyn, Burstyn ...STECHER, TRACHMAN >from Nowy Zmigrod, Dukla family web site: www.KehilaLinks.JewishGen.org/Krosno/Kramer.htm |
