Although I prefer to share good news with you, sometimes I have to let you
know of sadness. Vitalija Gircyte's sister passed away on Friday, January 20 after a lengthy illness. Through her work at the Kaunas Regional Archive (KRA), Vitalija Gircyte has been a member of the LitvakSIG family for a long timeand is personally familiar to many of us. Howard Margol writes: "for over ten years, Vitalija was a great friend of Litvak SIG and a very important factor in getting records in the KRA translated. For years, she managed the translation process at the KRA for Litvak SIG up until January, 2011. Vitalija and her sister were very close. Vitalija is alone now and in deep sorrow; she has no family." I'm sure messages of condolence will be appreciated; please use your discretion in contacting her while she mourns the death of her only relative. You may contact Vitalija by email to v.gircyte@... or postal mail to her at the Kaunas Regional Archive, Maironio 28, Kaunas, LT44249 Lithuania. Eden Joachim President, LitvakSIG

Ralph Salinger asked, "Where can I see old Lithuanian telephone
books?" Through my website http://genealogyindexer.org, you can search 1930, 1935, and 1938 Lithuanian telephone directories (Lietuvos telefono abonentu sarasas), and 1933, 1937, and 1939 Vilna business directories (1937 and 1939 include nearby localities >from the Polish Wojewodztwo Wilenskie). If you are not interested in doing a full-text search across these directories, but only in manually examining the entries for a few small towns, you might want to jump to the towns' sections through the lists at: http://genealogyindexer.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14 (1930) http://genealogyindexer.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13 (1935) http://genealogyindexer.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12 (1938) These directories are available online thanks to the efforts of Michael Gordon, Saul Issroff, Joe Woolf, Andrew Kapochunas, Helen Katz, and Ann Rabinowitz. Please note that some Polish directories searchable through this site include localities now in Lithuania that were once part of the Polish regions of Wojewodztwo Wilenskie or Wojewodztwo Nowogrodzkie. The most comprehensive such business directories are probably the 1926/1927, 1928, 1929, and 1930 Poland and Danzig Business Directories (identified as d21, d22, d23, and d24 on the site). To discover which Polish directories contain a specific Lithuanian town, search across all directories for the town's Polish name. (I have not catalogued which Polish directories include Lithuanian territory.) Also note that the Vilna and Kovne Gubernias of the Russian Empire are included in directory d311, called the 1889 Russia, Poland, and Warsaw Industry Directory. Best regards, Logan Kleinwaks kleinwaks@... near Washington, D.C.

Citizenship in less than 5 years?
#general
bikerick
I am trying to find a passenger manifest for a likely relative -- Aran
FELDMAN -- who was naturalized October 4, 1886 in the Superior Court of the City of New York. I found a manifest (ship -- Kaiser) leaving Hamburg for Liverpool and then the US on December 2, 1881 that Aran FELDMAN is on. Could this be the same person -- i.e., could Aran have received his citizenship in a little short of five years? In other words did the Court check passenger arrival papers back then to determine if the applicant was being truthful as to how long he'd been in the country or did they loosely interpret the five years? Rick Hyman California Searching: ZIMMERSPITZ Chorowice, Skawina, & Gdow, Poland ROTTERSMAN: Gdow, Poland HUPERT: Wielke Drogie, Poland FELDMAN Ungvar, (Ung)Csertesz, Hajdunanas, Hungary WEISS Lasztomer, Ungvar, Vilag, Hungary

Finding address in the census?
#general
A. E. Jordan
I am stuck trying to do in effect a reverse search trying to see who lives
at specific addresses in the US Federal Census. I tried the One Step tool and it gets me in the neighborhood but not in the right blocks. I am stuck not able to find these addresses. Anyone have any other ideas how to locate addresses in the census? I did the mapping and I have locations mapped, etc. Some of the addresses seem sort of problematic because of changes in the map of Brooklyn, New York but I know the address and the corner I need to see. I can get to the street but not the right numbers. The addresses I am looking for in 1920 and 1930 are: 1091 Hopkinson Avenue, Brooklyn 280 Sutter Street, Brooklyn (this might just be the business) 171 Thatford, Brooklyn 200 or 220 Thatford, Brooklyn Any ideas how to find those addresses in the Census? Thanks Allan Jordan

Lvov house numbers (again)
#galicia
Eli Brauner
To Henryk question.
In addition to the clear evidence of the 1871 Lvov Address Directory... I have under hand many dozens of various house numbers of my family. Obviously if the numbers would refer to public buildings there would be no diverse mixture of numbers. Eli Brauner

Yefim Kogan
Dear Bessarabers,
I would like to update you on a very interesting project we have started only couple of months ago and moving along very well: Bessarabia Business Directory - translation/transcription of the records. A group of our members have already completed many records for some of the major towns in Bessarabia: - all of Khotin uezd, including Khotin, Sokuryany, Lipkany, Edinetz, Briceni, Novoselitsa and many small towns and villages; - the large town of Bendery; - Kalarash, Olishkany, Dombroveny, Kaushany. Many other towns and villages are now in progress; I would like to very much thank our volunteers Paola Khalili, Ala Gamulka, and Harvey Kabaker for their great work. I also want to introduce you to Harvey Kabaker -- a new Project Manager/Coordinator for the Bessarabia Business Directory project. Harvey has been working on the project for some time and completed one of the large districts in Bessarabia -- Khotin. Very soon the records will start to appear as a JewishGen database and the JewishGen Bessarabia SIG website. We still have many pages to transliterate for towns like Kishinev, Beltsy, Akkerman, and others. Please contact Harvey Kabaker if you want to participate at < harvey.kabaker@... >. Yefim Kogan Bessarabia SIG Coordinator Researching Kogan, Spivak, Khaymovich, Srulevich, Levit in Kaushany, Bendery, Tarutino, Akkerman, Kiliya - all in Bessarabia.
