Revue du Cercle de Genealogie Juive #108
#france
georges.graner@...
Revue du Cercle de Genealogie Juive # 108 has been distributed.
Here is the summary: Revue du Cercle de Genealogie Juive, issue 108, Winter 2011 Guy Worms explains how the hyphenated surname Strauss-Kahn was formed. The story takes place in Alsace. In 1808 Feistel Joseph becomes Joseph Strauss at Haguenau (Bas-Rhin). His ancestry is given up to the 17th century. His great-grandson Gaston Strauss is born in 1875. Another Alsatian family is the Kahn family (a local spelling of Cohen) which is also tracked up to the 17th century. Max Marius Kahn is born in 1904. Gaston Strauss and Marius Kahn are remote cousins. Gaston Strauss' wife is a catholic girl named Yvonne Stengel and they have a son Gilbert Strauss in 1918. Gaston Strauss has been seriously wounded during WW1 so that he calls his cousin Marius to help him in his business. After Gaston's death in 1934, his widow marries Marius in 1937. The latter decides to adopt his step-son Gilbert in 1939. After this adoption, Gilbert is officially called Gilbert Strauss-Kahn. Therefore this surname comes >from the two husbands of Yvonne Stengel. In the last issue of this journal Pascal Faustini looked for the origins of the Wolf and Berr Orchel families >from Nancy. In the present one, Pierre-André Meyer details some documents which allow to establish the links between these families. He shows marriage contracts, after death inventories, donations and family boards. Avraham Malthête has studied the register of circoncisions of the mohel Jacob Halphen (1828-1865) >from Bourbonne-les-Bains (Haute-Marne). This register was given in 2009 to the Alliance Israélite Universelle library by Mr Denis Marciano. This mohelbuch contains 605 acts >from many different places all over in France. Members of the CGJ are concerned by several of these acts. Bernard Lyon-Caen was interested in the Alsatian surname Oury and found that it was changed into Ury or Uhri among the offsprings of a same ancestor in the 19th century. Our Chairman, Bruno Bloch, provide us his children's ancestry. Only 7 generations are included in the present issue. The complete work, totalizing 41 generations (up to an ancestor born ca. 635), can be consulted on our website www.genealoj.org in the Members' corner. This issue also reminds you to register for the 32nd IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy, Paris July 15-18, 2012. Look at www.paris2012.eu

Martyrs in Alsace
#france
blum@...
Two of my ancestors are mentioned in the Ketouba of one of their
children or grandchildren as "martyr", meaning that they died al Kiddush hashem. Does anybody know about published research on blood libel trials in Alsace in the 18th century? A third ancestor was murdered, but how and where are not clear. Specifically,I search for relevant details on the cases of - Meyer Moises BLOCH >from Wintzenheim. He is mentioned in the Ketouba of his daughter Beylen BLOCH, who married on 05.02.1732 Isaac-Eisik WURMSER, apparently in Uffholtz (acc. to Jean Lorentz); - Jacob DREYFUS >from Froeningue, the father of Samuel DREYFUS - Leopold Löwel GÖTSCHEL lived 1784 as son in the 9th family in Rothbach, Bas Rhin. His father was Götschel (LEVY?). Later he moved to Niederhagental(Hagenthal-le-bas). According to the marriage registration of his son Caspar/Gaspard GÖTSCHEL, he was murdered on 25.11.1803 in Obermuehlebach or Obermichelbach (the place name is difficult to read). I could not find this death registration in Obermuespach (Muespach-le-haut) or Muehlebach-sur-Munster. Michelbach-le-haut did not answer, also not the unlikely Obermichelbach in Germany. Relationship to Capt. DREYFUS
#france
In a message on 19 Jan 2012, Rosanne Leeson asked the relationship who may
exist between the DREYFUS of San Salvador and the Capt. Alfred DREYFUS. Capt. Jacques DREYFUS born in San Salvador on 05 Apr 1892 was decorated of the Legion d'Honneur : http://www.culture.gouv.fr/LH/LH101/PG/FRDAFAN84_O19800035v0023779.htm his file on line shows also his photo. Capt. Jacques DREYFUS was the son of Julien DREYFUS (o Vesoul 1863 + Paris 1918) and of Zelia WIMPHEN. Julien DREYFUS was the son of Jacques DREYFUS of Sierentz and of Rose HAAS of Sarreguemines. Lazare DREYFUS, brother of Julien (o Vesoul 1851) was also in San Salvador. Except the fact that Jacques DREYFUS was a Capt in the french army I do not find any connection with Alfred DREYFUS. Hope this will help Andre Convers Louveciennes, France
