GOLDBERG, Blue Island, Chicago, IL (early 20th-cen.)
#general
Hello, Dear Colleague Genners.
My WOLKOFSKY family is still a great source for mysteries and lost branches. And as always with this family, all the information should be questioned... As for now, I'm looking for Ethel and Jack GOLDBERG, who lived on Blue Island Ave., Chicago, IL. This street refers to an unknown date, however Chicago is believed to be their place of residence. Ethel was the daughter of Haim Leib (Harry) and Tzina WOLKOFSKY, and I can only estimate that she was born around 1860s/1870s. She probably came to the States from Galati, Romania. Ethel and Jack had a daughter, Shifra (I've no idea what was her American name), and 7 other children. That's all we have about this branch. Any help would be much appreciated, Yours, Arnon Hershkovitz Shrewsbury, MA arnon.hershkovitz@...

Where was Johannah LYON born?
#usa
Steven Leof <sleof.sln25@...>
I'm trying to find out where my great-great-grandmother Johannah aka
Hannche, Hannsche or Hannah LYONS was born and the names of her parents, etc. I believe Hannche was born on 16 May 1848. Family records indicate that she was born in Freischbach, Germany however I haven't been able to locate the village; it has been suggested that Freischbach was an Americanised phonetic spelling.... Hannche immigrated to America between 1863 and 1865. and married Henry NATHAN in Memphis, Tennessee on 10 Oct 1866. The wedding was performed by Rabbi Simon Tuska. Henry was born on 8 Mar 1846 in Ilvesheim, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. By 1867 the Nathans were living in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. They moved to Manhattan between 1880 and 1900. Hannche died on 18 Jun 1910 in Far Rockaway, New York. If anyone can suggest where to look for additional information I'd be appreciative. Steven Leof, London, England sleof.sln25@... Researching my ancestors from Belarus: - LIFSCHITZ (aka LEOF) >from Mogilev; LEVIN >from Azaritch SHERIZEN >from Mazyr France: - POHL; Germany: BACHRACH probably >from Hessen FEIS probably >from Bayern; FISHER >from Maineck, Bayern HECHT >from Langenschwarz, Hessen; HERTZ probably >from Germany GOLDSCHMIDT >from Bellersheim, Hessen; - KATZENSTEIN >from Rhina, Hessen LYONS >from somewhere that sounds like Freischbach; NEUFELD >from Berlin NATHAN >from Ilvesheim, Baden-Wuerttemberg; TRIEST >from Bayern OFFENBACH probably >from Germany SACHSENDORFER aka SUESSMANN and ROSENBACH >from Ermershausen, Bayern [snip]

More on PERSKY brothers and oral history
#general
Steven Bloom
Allan asked if there were genealogical standards for accepting some relationship as
being so (I guess, in a manner of speaking, "officially" true). The standard that I have seen in writing and implied by many responses to just this sort of problem is that any claim of a relationship should have "clearly convincing evidence." In most cases, this would mean at least one form of documentation establishing the each part of the claim (that they are >from same town, descended from same man, etc). I would call a tombstone "documentation". In your chain ofevidence, you are missing one link or two links. One is the clear link of the other PERSKY to your town of origin. That he claims it or did claim it is better than nothing, but only weakly convincing to me. I consider that a good start, but not solid evidence. The other problem is that you don't know of the Isaachars are the same man. What most people would say is clearly convincing is that the men are likely close relatives of some sort. You probably won't get anyone agreeing to much more than that, so you will just have to continue to dig. Of course, it is your tree, and so long as you keep it private, I suppose you can claim what you wish. However, if it is to be distributed, and in most cases, it will be, somehow, then you should probably hold out a bit. Steve Bloom Central Virginia
