Re: Vinitsky/Winitsky from Detroit, Mich.

My uncle was Abraham "Roy" Wenitt (1906-1991.) The only information I have is that his father Isador Wenitsky was from Russia. His grandfather was also Abraham Wenitsky. The family lived in the Bronx, New York. It appears that there are many spelling variations for this name so, I would research as many spelling variations as you can think of.

Re: Old lineages (don Vino = Weinstock)

Moishe Miller
Hello,
I have a similar story in my family. I was told my late grandmother's family was originally known as "don Vino" and where wine merchants in Spain. At the time of the inquisition, they relocated to the Tokaj-area of Hungary and changed adopted the surname of Weinstock. My paper trail takes me back to the late 1700's in Hungary. Ancestry confirms I have 1% Spanish ethnicity. I wish there was a way to learn more about that part of my heritage. -- Moishe Miller Brooklyn, NY moishe.miller@... JGFF #3391 |

Trying to Make Sense of a Jewish Welfare Board, War Correspondence Entry
#records
Eric Ellman
Friends,
I do not understand what's going on in an entry for the Jewish Welfare Board, War Correspondence Entry. Can someone help? The docs concern Max Ellman (1890-1963) Max Ellman, Army No. 1907079; Beneficiary, Selke Ellman (daughter); c/o Etel Tsiril Schwartz (grandmother and guardian), Saratov, Russia; Nature of Claim, Allotment and Allowance; Located through information given by [Max or Mrs.] Ellman; Allotment and allowance due to daughter was recent settled by check upon forwarding proper papers to Veterans Bureau; case closed. Comments and questions: (1) I have a vague idea of what's going on here, but I can use some more help?; (2) What year might this record be from? According to Max's headstone application, Max enlisted 9/19/17 and was discharged 9/27/19; (3) Max Ellman was from Minkovitz, Ukraine in the Kamyanets, Podilsky. He married his wife, Rachel (or Jennie) there in 1912 and immigrated to New York in 1913. Sartov is light-years (1,600 mi.) from Minkovitz so that seems strange to me. I have a high degree of confidence I have the right Max Ellman since the Army serial number on the JWB document matches the Army serial number on the headstone application in 1963 and the headstone application matches everything I know about Max. Nu? (4) On Max's petition for naturalization in 1925 (I know this is the right Max), he lists a son, Soloman, but no daughter. I could not find Max on the manifest. The 1930 and 1940 censuses (Brooklyn) lists a daughter, Bessie (b. 1924), but no son. I found no census info for 1915 or 1920. -- Eric J. Ellman

"married in the rabbi's office rather than in the main sanctuary (not sure if that's what the primary area of worship was called). Would there have been a precedent, or reason? "
My mother said she got married in a blue suit - I don't know where, but it wasn't a big wedding, and money wasn't the issue. The issue was that WW II was raging in Europe (and the US wasn't in it yet, but soon), and a big todo wasn't proper. Perhaps your grandparents married near or during a war? Or Covid-19? Or Spanish flu? Sally Bruckheimer Princeton, NJ |

Interesting retrospective concerning Washington Heights... The ’upper’ Manhattan neighborhood where so many German Jewish refugees relocated to that it’s been nicknamed: "Frankfurt on Hudson, respectively "The IV. Reich":

I'm a descendant of rabbi Yaakov Moshe charlap. I haven't chanced upon too many relatives that are descendants of him as well. I know that there was a rabbi in new york, by the name of rabbi yechiel michel charlap. If anyone has a file with a list of all his descendants, and also a couple of photos, it would be cool to see.

Shlomo Katz
In fact, getting married in a Shul (synagogue) is a relatively new (i.e., 19th century) innovation and was disapproved of by many rabbis who viewed it as being influenced by the Christian concept of a church wedding. Traditionally, Jewish weddings were conducted outdoors weather permitting.

Yiddish Letter Translation Assistance - Thank You!

Dave Baron
Hello,
Thank you in advance for any assistance translating this note to my Saba (grandpa), from I believe Moshe Shertok, also known as Moshe Sharett.
Moshe Sharett, Israel’s first foreign minister (1948–56) and second prime minister, replacing David Ben-Gurion who in 1953 retired temporarily.
The signature resembles that of Shertok on the list of signatures from the Declaration of Independence, last name on the left, but I could be wrong: https://www.knesset.gov.il/docs/images/signatures.jpg

We are a little group of people trying to verify if our ancestors born in Emden/Bunde/Jemgum in the 1600’s are really related to the Henrique family who settled in Gluckstadt in the early 1600's. Some researchers think that they would be children of Josua Moses Henriques born in 1665 in Gluckstadt, Manuel Mendes Henriques Cohen born around 1640 in Gluckstadt, a Female Mussaphia Dionis Hinrichen born around 1640 in Gluckstadt or Manuel Mendes Henriques Cohen born around 1640 in Gluckstadt (parents unknown), However, until now we found not written evidence on such link.
Thanks and best regards

I have in the past used Family Tree Maker, Roots Magic and others. However, I changed to Family Historian about 5 years ago as it is incredibly flexible and customisable. It does great charts and reports as well. It supports Plugins and there are lots of these to expand the features, should they be needed. Colin Harris London, UK |

I was once told that my G-Grandfather arrived in the US in a port in Rhode Island- possibly Truro or Providence. He certainly does not appear on the EIDB.
