I had Rootsmagic and had lots of problems with it working on my Apple computer! Their customer service was horrid.
I ended up buying MacFamily Tree and especially like that it will flag a problem (duplicates, age/date of birth is a conflict, etc) and interfaces with familysearch.org which has millions of Jewish records. It does books, reports, etc. Cost was reasonable. Has some nice features and does allow same sex marriage by changing the sex, which pops up automatically (ex, female if you are adding to a male on there already). You can play with the trial version and see if you like it. I think it is easy to use but is a pretty powerful program and haven't learned how to do lots of the fun stuff...yet. It does have an easy to use manual that you can download and print or save on your computer for reference. I really haven't had to use the manual much as I find the program pretty intuitive. Researching surname to find links to GG birth town/hometown, found an Australian newspaper 1915 reporting areas Mlava and Molava across River Danube, Serbia? To be sure, I’m a big fan of Ancestry.com in general. It’s unequalled... That said, not so regarding their handling of DNA test results from other suppliers, or more precisely their absolute lack thereof. Luckily, if you tested with one of the other providers (because there arevadvantages to that), having your results uploaded to all the others (except Ancestry) leaves your resulting absence from Ancestry... Insignificant.

Here are the translations, in the same order. I didn't translate the Hebrew dates. "Ben" means son of, "bat" means daughter. Reb is only an honorific term it doesn't mean Rabbi.

Re: UK Marriage Authorisation Interpretation Questions and Translation Request

David Harrison <djh_119@...>
This is a question of crossed lines. I think that Authorizations relate to Orthodox Jewish Weddings in Britain under their Beth Din and are not a part of Civil Marriages. Usually existing membership of a Synagogue is required and that may have needed to have
been proved with the Ketubah for the parent of the person being married. But for a non-member the Ketubah would have been needed by officers of the Chief Rabbi if it were possible or then maybe a meeting with questions on the reality of the Jewish ancestry
of the person . Certainly, pre-WW1 the United Synagogue only had one Rabbi (as the Chief) all other people who now would be Rabbis were Reverends and that person might only give the D'vah Torah (or sermon) whilst the Chozen led the majority of the service
as is still often the style in many places.

First, let me say that searching Ancestry or any other commercial database is a very poor substitute for using JRI-Poland and Gesher Galicia for Galicia records and JRI-Poland for records from other areas of Poland.

Much the same here, I have families who split went to USA and one stayed in UK, I can only find 1 record for a neutralisation in USA, they all travelled in early 1900. Been on a long journey myself looking - told a few weeks ago by a kind gent on here that the UK didn't have many records at all for incoming as they assumed most would just land and then go elsewhere. I can suggest though if you are on Ancestry to do a search with the beginning of the surname and end it with * as this will then bring up an array of spellings (and mistakes in spellings), also don't just look at the records straight from the search, look at original document that you can 'view' I found a couple with 3 different variations of the spelling of mine.

Does Family Tree Builder - which works with MyHeritage - work the same way as Bob describes FTM & Ancestry? That is, can you put all the tree data into Family Tree Builder, and keep it just on the computer - sync it to MyHeritage (which is on-line) but make that all private?

Re: Second try: How do I make a payment to a Ukrainian Archive?

I had responded previously with some comments. You might try the following: Using google translate, write a message in english and it will be translated into Ukrainian. Reply to the archives. Tell them it is difficult to pay them directly and ask if someone can provide a personal email address for you to send payment. Transferwise can send payments cheaply to a personal email address. The receiving person will link that email to their personal bank, then receive payment and then they can pay the invoice. You might look up the director of that particular archive online, and put Attention: director XXX in the subject line. This is an easy way to proceed, and since your invoice is very cheap, there is little risk to you. Otherwise you will need to contact a bank in the Ukraine to handle this. You can do a bit of searching using Google Chrome which will translate websites for you, and then email the invoice with a message in Ukrainian. I would suggest in both cases, to put the English translation in your message -just so you will know what you sent, and perhaps someone on the receiving end will benefit as well, and respond in English. Good Luck!

On Ancestry.com there are 2 (two) records of death for Benjamin LUKACZER in Stanislaw, one for 1880, another for 1883 (see attached). In both records, Ancestry says that the original data came from the JRI Galicia of JewishGen. I searched the JewishGen, the Gesher Galicia, the JRI-Poland, and FamilySearch to no avail, no ANY record of Benjamin LUKACZER's death in Stanislaw in the 1880s. Of course, there are records of death for other Benjamins in various years, from Brody, from Radziwill, but nothing from Stanislaw.
Is there someone who could clear my confusion and direct me to the record of death for Benjamin LUKACZER in Stanislaw in 1880 and 1883? -- Ilya Zeldes North Fort Myers, FL

Hi!
For several years I have been studying the history of the Frenkel family from Rovno. From childhood I knew that my dad, Frenkel Tsal (Betsalel) Bentsionovich was born in 1910 and lived in the city of Rivne before the war. At the beginning of the war, he was drafted into the army. His parents died during the war. Dad told me many times that my grandmother's name was Leia, grandfather was Bentsion, and that my brother and I were named after them. In New York, at the Beth David Elmont Cemetery, Section E, Block 4, there is a memorial to the Jews killed in Rovno. It was built in 1954 http://www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/hm-rovno-bd.htm. THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY THE FIRST ROVNER SICK AND BENEVOLENT SOCIETY WITH THE HELP ROVNER LANDSLEIT IN 1954. The monument bears the name and surname of my grandmother Lea Frenkel. Recently I found out my grandmother's maiden name - Saginur. I think one of her relatives, brother or sister of my grandmother, lived in New York and brought her name to the monument. I've posted aphoto of monument anf photo of my grandmother on ViewMate at the following address ... https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM91228

The last names of my ancestors that I study:
Frenkel (Frinkel) - Rivne, Ostrog; Saginur-Rovno, Kleban; Herzenov (Hertsinov, Hertsikov) -Belorussi; Luker (Liker) -Lithuania, Ukraine.

The Jewish Genealogical and Archival Society of Greater Philadelphia meeting and program Time: 1:00 check in, chat, and schmooze. Official program starts promptly at 1:30 PM EST Topic: What is there for Jews in modern day Poland? An Introduction to The Neshoma Project As we know, ninety percent of Polish Jews were murdered during World War II. It's understandable that some people, especially Jews of Polish descent, might have reservations about going to Poland, the site of such vast pain and loss. And yet, Poland is an integral part of Jewish history. Leora Tec has travelled all over Poland having conversations with non-Jews who, in different ways, are remembering the Jews who used to be their neighbors. Those interviewed, working to heal historical wounds, come from many different fields including: scholarship, teaching, guiding, grassroots activities, museum work and the arts. All meetings require a membership to our society EXCEPT for March 7th! Free Beginner's workshop! See our website www.jgasgp.org for more information. Marilyn Mazer Golden VP

Fred, what you describe is Family Tree Maker. I have been using it for fifteen years or so and recommend it highly. Two other advantages are that it has a lot of tutorials and notes online plus it interfaces with Ancestry.com. If you are researching documents, then FTM and Ancestry work together very nicely. You will have to put your tree on Ancestry but you can keep it totally private. Keeping the two trees, the one on your computer and the other online, in sync is easy and reliable. Since I have not used other programs, I cannot compare FTM to any others.
