Hi All,
On next Monday I'll go making photos about the Aranyalbum to the Hungarian Jewish Archive
I'd like to copy the entire book.
I have photos about few parts of it, the Jewish soldiers of Gyongyos, Eger, Hatvan and Tiszafured.

Information on WWI Soldiers #hungary

stephen@...

Another useful source of information on WWI soldiers is the book titled
"Magyar Frontharcos Mozgalom", which roughly translated means "Hungarian
Front-line Troops Association". While it doesn't specifically cover
Jewish soldiers and it only includes those who were members of this
veterans association, a very large proportion appear to be Jewish.
Besides giving the usual military information of rank, unit, where
served and decorations, it list where people are from, where they
enlisted and names of family members. Most of the listings also include
photos. The book was published in 1938 and many of these Jewish heroes
of WWI, including my grandfather ended up in Auschwitz.

The 1941 edition has some photos of major figures and various

I was amazed at how many very caring sharing people
responded. I have now learned that, having paid a small

But the NYT didn't tell me that! Hooray for helpful

Hi
I've posted a postcard photo of three young women that was sent to my
Grandmother >from Patterson NJ. I believe the family was known to her in
Lodz, Poland because Patterson had many "Lodzers" relocated there.

It is on ViewMate at the following address ...
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=19469

I've also posted the other side of the postcard which you can see at the
following address...
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=19470
The name and address on the reverse of the photo appears to be Zigmund Rosenberg,
12 Spruce Street, Paterson NJ. My grandparents had friends or relatives in
Paterson, among them being the Hamberger family.

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.
Thank you very much.

Town in Ukraine/Russia Name? ViewMate help needed #general

Pamela Weisberger

I've posted an image >from a 1920 census record in which a town name
was written, and then crossed out and is difficult to read.

I am trying to identify the name of the town listed under "place of
birth" on the top line. In the second line, the town of "Odessa"
appears, easily readable.
(The town names were crossed out because the census taker only needed
the country of birth - Russia.)

Due to the strike-through, however, I can't decipher the other town
name where both parents of the children were born. Looks like Vallina,
Vabbina, Vallona -- none of which make sense. I believe that this
family (with the surnames KIPNIS, KIPNESS and GRUNBERG/GRINBERG,
originally lived in the Zaslav, Nikolayev area before moving to
Odessa.

Any thoughts? Here is the direct link:

Temporary Jews Shelter #general

Hi Listers
I know >from the Chrysalis web site that Berl S[h]ames stayed one day at the
Temp Jews Shelter in London on his way >from Lithuania to Cape Town in 1913
I have not been able to find the his entry in the Temp Jews Shelter database -
this entry usually indicates the ship the transmigrant came on >from Libau to
Hull

Can anyone access more than one page of entries >from this database using a
wildcard - I'm sure he's there just maybe with incorrect name spelling or
something?
Is there any other database of visitors to the Shelter
Thanks

how would you pronounce this name #general

Dalya Dektor

On a gravestone, a relative's father's name is spelled Nun Tet Ayin.
His English name was Nathan, but how would the Hebrew name be
pronounced? Nette?
Mark London

My grandfather's name was:
English - Nathan
Hebrew - Natan
Polish passport - Natan
Ship manifest - Nuta

Who gave the information to the stone cutter for what to enter on the stone?
Perhaps that person didn't know how to accurately spell Natan in Hebrew.
I have found children giving information on a parent's death certificate who
do not know their mother's maiden name.

You should certainly include all legal relationships but also genetic. A family

Tracing a Holocaust survivor in California #general

A S Goldberg

I am trying to trace a Holocaust survivor to glean genealogical information
about her family. I know, >from a newspaper article about her family, that
in 2008 she was still alive and well, aged about 75, and living in the Los
Angeles area. I also know the names of her two children who will both be
mature American adults. The switchboard.com listings of her 'phone number
are no longer valid and I do not know if she is still alive. I would
appreciate any advice as to how I might be able to trace her or her family.

Please respond to me direct at alancomm@...
