Passports are not only vital official and formal evidence, if it should be needed, but essential in family research. I still have my parent's (german) passports from when they left Vienna

If the mother is still living, I ask her. Sometimes it's nice to know that someone cares about the stubbed off branches. Some have hardly been able to talk about that empty crib.

No one remembers where the Mexican story/connection came from, family gossip is the best I came up with. Well, DNA has fixed that. Now to figure out what is 51% Jewish actually means.
