Hello my name is Michael, and this is a summary of my Belarus ancestors:
My Maternal Grandmother's parents are supposed to have been >from Minska Gobernia. My G-Grandmother, Rose (Ruchel) KULIK was said to have been born during 1883 in Vselyub outside of Novogrudok. Her parents were Samuel KULIK and Geyla Zelda BASHNIK. Samuel's parents were Abraham Lev KULIK and Bessie (Peshe) BELLSKY. Abraham's father was Samuel KULIK. My G-Grandfather Barnett (Beryl) GOLDBERG was said to have been born in 1875 in Korelichi outside of Novogrudok. His parents were Joseph GOLDBERG and Bessie (Chana Belle) COHEN. My G-Grandparents both came to America. So the information on my G-G-Grandparents is based on what they told my Grandmother as well as info reported on various documents. The info on my G-Grandmother's ancestors, which goes back several more generations is based on word of mouth only. I have not seen documents >from "over there", although I have not concentrated on these branches just yet. I DO rely on the "word of mouth" info, due to the fact that Rose's grandfather lived to be 104 and my grandmother's oldest brother (who was born there) met him as a very young boy. Unfortunately my grandmother's two older brothers passed away several years ago so I have lost the opportunity to question them. Rose had an interest in family history so that also (in my opinion) lends some credibility to her information's accuracy in terms of names. I think that the dates are less reliable. I recently located another branch of KULIKs in California who are descended from Itzchok KULIK, my G-Grandmother's older brother. Itchok's two livingoffspring do vaguely recall hearing the same tree being verbally recounted while they were children in New York. If anyone has seen or heard of any of these names before I would be happy to hear >from you. Hi, JewishGenners, can you help?
We recently returned >from a riverboat cruise through Ukraine and we were asked by JOSEPH SHAPIRO of Kanev, Ukraine, if we would post a message to DAVID and SHIRLEY SHAPIRO of the San Francisco area, whom someone may know, as David is connected with the University of California and may be a member of JGS.... JOSEPH SHAPIRO was born Poldilskaya, November 12, 1921. He said that he WAS in touch David and Shirley Shapiro, and then all letters stopped. He would very much like to connect with them again. He mentioned an "agency - HARCO", but I have no idea if it has any connection. I have a photograph of him and his full address. Email Shirley R. Rose directly : Dreame@aol.com

Stephen Rabinowitz <srabinow@...>
The compromise between vertical and horizontal is one explanation for the
angle of the mezuzah. There is another explanation. Some say that the mezuzah was placed vertically until the Crusades in Europe, when hostile locals started painting crossbars on peoples' mezuzahs to form a cross. To thwart this, mezuzahs were placed at an angle. This was not done in Islamic countries. In Israel today, some have used this explanation to resume placing their mezuzahs vertically, since they have no concern that anyone will desecrate them. Steve Rabinowitz MODERATOR NOTE: We've strayed too far >from geneaology folks. This thread is ended.

JRI Poland #Poland Thanks to the Bialystok Shtetl Co-op
#poland
Willie46@...
My mother was born in Bialystok, but, (I'm sure you have heard this before) I
never asked her about her grandparents and other relatives before she passed away. Since hers was the first generation to emigrate, I needed the LDS films to help me trace my ancestry. To my great surprise, I easily found in the JRI- Poland database dozens of records of people that are most likely my ancestors and many new names to research. However, there are still gaps that remain to connect these ancestors to me. The shtetl co-op has so much more that it can do. I volunteer to help with the data entry. But that is only one small way I can and will participate. The most important contributions are by the dedicated leadership of the Shtetl Co-op and the transliterators who have made the researcher's task much less tedious and painful. However, there remain many Bialystok films to be transliterated >from the Russian and the transliteration of Cyrillic documents has a cost. They cannot be done without the monetary support of all the researchers who are the beneficiaries. Therefore, I have just written a check to JRI-Poland specifically directed to the Bialystok Shtetl Co-op. And I challenge all other Bialystok researchers to do the same. Sonia Hoffman, in her recent JewishGen post, pointed out that the Bialystok records include references to families living in shtetls for miles around (often those places for which there are no other sources of records). So now, I should say "I challenge all other Bialystok and _vicinity_ researchers to do the same!" Additionally, for all you Americans, it was announced at the Los Angeles Seminar that JRI-Poland has applied for tax exempt status, which, when granted, will make your contribution tax deductible. In addition, if you work for a philanthropic company, this contribution may qualify for Matching Gifts status if your company has such a program. Find out how to contribute at www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/reippco.htm. Mark Halpern Hermosa Beach, CA

Michael <mtrap@...>
Hi,
I'm searching for the ECKMAN family >from Vilna and later on >from Detroit. Israel Eckman (son of Yakov Kopel and Sarah Tzitza EKMAN), and his wife, Fannie, moved to the United States >from Vilna in the early 1900's. They had three children: 1- Sophie (1906 born NJ - 1987 Detroit), 2- Esther Blossom (1906 NJ - 1987 Detroit), 3- Unknown son. I'm not sure exactly when Sophie and Esther Blossom moved to Detroit, but at at least >from the 1960's on they were both living there. They were in their 60's at the time, both unmarried, and both were school teachers. The last address I have for Sophie is 13137 Flanders Street. I'm not sure what happened to the son or if he even lived in Detroit. If anyone knows of this family, or can help me in locating my relatives I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much.
