JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Searching - RYSSIN #general

Chuck Weinstein <cmw2@...>

I am posting this information for a friend who has no internet access.
Her name is Joan A. RYSSIN, born San Francisco, CA 9/2/51. Her father,
Joseph RYSSIN, born St. Petersburg, Russia, 12/25/1910, lived in
Shanghai during WW II, and settled in San Francisco by 1948. His father
was Leopold RYSSIN, who had two sisters, names unknown, but may have
lived in Romania. Joseph RYSSIN had a sister, Fanny, who married an
unknown person, but had three children, ALbert, Sherrill, and Priscilla.
Leopold RYSSIN was married to Sally or Sarah GRUENBERG, born in
Singapore. Sarah (Sally's) father was possibly born in Constantinople or
Greece. Her mother was born in Egypt. Joan's mother, Ida Ruth COHEN,
born 6/27/1911 in New York City, was the daughter of Harry COHEN and
Ruth SHABSELS, born in Russia. Ruth had four brothers and a sister. Her
brothers were Abraham, Nathan, Daniel, and Morris. Her sister, name
unknown, died during the war and has a son who last was reported to be
living in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), about 15 years ago. Ida has three
brothers, Harry, Benjamin, and Abe.

Does any of this information ring any bells with anyone? Please post or

I am requesting assistance for information on behalf of Eric Monheit in
Melbourne, Australia.

Eric is searching for twin cousins, Ilse LANDSBERG (nee COHN) and Vera
Genbicki (nee COHN), born c. 1915 to Raphael and Bertha COHN in Hamburg,
Germany. Also, any descendants of Ilse and Vera.

His last known address for Ilse and Vera was in Scarsdale, New York in
the 1960's, although as late as 1983 some mail was returned >from
Scarsdale showing the name LANE - I'm not sure of what, if any
connection there is with the name Lane.

Please respond in the first instance to me - if you know any details,
could you please provide a snail mail address for Eric to correspond
directly with you.

Thanks

I am trying to find remnants of the late Yaacov(Jacob) Mordechai
Kaplan`s family.
I know he had at least one child Morris(Moshe) who married a Mary
Weinstein in London in 1900 and died aged 50 in London in 1923.
By trade Morris was a diamond dealer.

I have found old pictures taken in HOBOKEN,New Jersey,USA of a Lillian
and a Miriam with Kaplan cousins in America written on the back.

Anyone out there who can help?
For interests sake,Morris was my great grandfather.

many thanks

a ministerial error. For instance, if it was the custom of
writing out the years and months of a young child's age, it may
also have been ordinary to write out also months and days, and
the two could have been mixed up. Like saying 2 and 10. One
person would think 2 months 10 days, another 2 years, 10 months.
"1/12" means one month (one twelfth of a year), thus 4/12
means four months. This is the standard way that the
census enumerators recorded fractional years.

I am relatively new to genealogy and have been trying to trace my maternal
ggps. All I knew was that they were Austrian and that my ggf's name was
Isidor GOLBLATT. I remember my mother telling me that he had died at
Dachau, and that his wife, whose first name I did not know, had survived
the war at Terezin (Teresienstadt).
Three days ago, not really expecting anything, I emailed that information
to Bait Terezin (bterezin@inter.net.il) to see if they could help. Imagine
my surprise when I received an email yesterday >from Alisah Schiller at Bait
Terezin.

Based on the little information I sent, Ms. Schiller was able to tell me
that my ggm's name was Hermine, that she indeed survived, and that,
contrary to my 40+ year old memories of family lore, my ggf had died at
Terezin, not Dachau. She will also be sending me a print out of the
computerized index of the prisoners.

I want to express my public, and heartfelt, thank you to Ms. Schiller &
Bait Terezin.
