some days ago, you listed info on the Ellis Island Foundation as it was a going conern with genealogy info. As I have been to Ellis Island, a while back, and had made a generous contribution to the Islands Wall of Honor, in order to have my mother's and grandparent's names to appear. While there, I noticed some names on wall , similar to our family. I punched in the name, and up came the individual who made the contribuion and the city they are located in. Currently, Ellis Island organization is trying to obtain substantial funds to start a data base of those you made a contribution, however, what that data base may entail is unknown to me. Hello all!
Gotta hear this! I visited a relative in New York (father's side). In my photo album she saw a picture of my grandmother (>from my mother's side) that got her very excited as she claimed that that person looks familiar. To claim knowledge of an unrelated woman, >from a different village, after 55 years, sounded to me like a good story to cap off a long day. Yet she was adamant and explained to me that she commuted on a local train in Hungary in 1943 with a particular woman that was carrying geese to the market. Since she had more geese than allowed on the train my relative shared the load. This woman and the one in my picture just looked too much the same. Did you guess? It turned out to be true and I found a lead on the Roth family that I had absolutely no information on. Here is one remarkable question: Never mind that these two authors are cousins and certainly interested in Hungarian genealogy, the question is why are they not in our discussion group? The following could be old news in August 1998, however when The Journey to Vaja was published, Elaine had missed people that Charles had on his version of the family tree. Is anyone in contact with Elaine? She might just discover a whole bunch of new relatives including live ones! My paternal grandfather comes >from Varanno (now Vranov, Slovakia). This is in
Zemplen County. I have checked the LDS catalog and so far they have only listed birth records for his town and province. I am interested in marriage records and death records as well. Perhaps LDS has not yet microfilmed all the records that are in existence. I am thinking of taking a trip to Slovakia this September. Would anyone know where the vital records of Vranov are located? Would they be in the town or is there a county archive? Secondly, my paternal grandmother is of Hungarian Jewish ancestry as well. I have yet to locate her town of origination. It is most likely she comes from one of the northeast counties , i.e. Zemplen, Saros, or Ung. Does anyone know where the archives for Saros County and Ung County are located?
