I found very interesting book in the library of Yad Vashem Museum:
"Censuses of jewish population in South- West Part in 1765- 1791. Archives of S-W Russia, part 5", 2 volumes edited, by Kamanin I., 1910,Kiev. It contains a lot of statistical information about jewish societies in these part of Poland, which later (1795) became a part of Russia (Volynskaya, Podolskaya, Kievskaya gubernia).Thenit was 4 "voevodstvo" (region): Kiev (including Kiev, Zhitomir, Ovtchutch "povet"-districts), Volyn (Lutsk, Vladimir, Kremenets povet), Podol (Kamenets,Letitchev, Tchervonograd povet), Bratslav (Bratsslav and Vinnitsa povet). Every jewish society in this huge region is listed, number of jews living, belonging to "kagal". In each place there are first and patronimic names of 3 jews participating those censuses ( usualy between them rabi and starosta of place). To bad is that it was before jews used family names. Yackov Berkun, Jerusalem searching BERKUN, KAPLEVATSKI, RABINOVITCH >from Zguritsi and Soroki, Bessarabia RABINOVITCH rabbi of Konetspol (Parnivka), Balta uezd, Podolia FELDMAN >from Zguritsi and Shargorod, Podolia POTIK >from Kapreshti and Kamenka, Bessarabia BERENSHTEIN >from Kapreshti, Bessarabia VUGMAN >from Raspopeni, Bessarabia SHEICHET, GETS >from Mozyr, Minsk gubenia Belorussia KATSENELSON >from Rechytsa, Minsk gubenia Belorussia AXELROD >from Korostyshev, Zhitomir oblast MOSTOVOI >from Radomyshl, Zhitomir oblast descendants of rabbi Itschak Aizik ben Yoel KATS 1753-1788, Korets and of Zvi Hirsh RABINOVITCH, rabbi of Mejiritch, Volin gubernia

Vicki Karno <vkarno@...>
Armed with an obituary >from the NY Times, I had a list of movies, plays and
television shows where actor/cousin Morris Carnofsky appeared. The Television Museum in Beverly Hill (Beverly Dr. at Little Santa Monica) is a great place to relive childhood moments as well as research. Going to the incredible computer library room I pulled up all the television films available. After ordering them, I proceeded to viewing cubicle which was mine for a two hour period. American Playhouse presents The World of Sholom Alecheim, starring cousin Morris, Zero Mostel, Molly Picon, etc. On a hunch, we checked out listings for Louis Armstrong, who mentions the Karnofsky family in his biography. Sure enough in 1979 Sachmo special, during one of the interview segments Louie talks about Mama Karnofsky teaching him to be good to people. He remembered her rocking baby David and all the children singing a lullaby - which he scat sang. What a thrill!

Is there a SIG for Odessa (in the Ukraine)? There used to be such a high
concentration of Jews living there, including my maternal grandfather, Benjamin Kapelevich. David Romney

Hi folks-
>from the death certificate and tombstone of my GGrandfather Yitzhak (Isaac) MINTZ I have recently determined that my GGGrandfather was named Yerachmiel (Robert) MINTZ. Yerachmiel is rumored to have had 14 children. I believe that he arrived in New York City in 1870, with at least part of his family. I'm still working through various sources looking for details on Yerachmiel and his family. But with so many children, at least some of whom were resident in NY, I'm hoping someone else will be able to help. Anybody recognize the name? -- Pavlik (Erik Paul MINTZ) Researching: MINTZ - http://www.mintz.net/pavlik/genealogy/mintz.htm BARAN - http://www.mintz.net/pavlik/genealogy/baran.htm GLASER - http://www.mintz.net/pavlik/genealogy/glaser.htm

In researching my grandmother's family (KALINA) & shtetl, (Zambrov, eastern
Poland), I found out that some of the male inhabitants were actually recruited into the Russian Army before the town was "invaded" by the Germans. Although I have given up most hope to find that any member of her family survived the war, I wonder, does anyone know of any list I could get my hands on relative to this topic? Thank You. Vicki Karno <vkarno@...>
After attend the Hollywood Chai session on researching a person
in the movie industry, I was anxious to give it a try. The Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is located at LaCienega and Olympic. (333 South La Cienega, Beverly Hills,Ca. 90211) The Library's holdings include books, periodicals and pamphlets, files of clippings, still photographs, screenplays and special archival research collections- all of which are related to the motion picture industry and its history. Requests for information and photos received by mail are handled by The National Film Information Service at the Academy. It is open to the public and has an old fashioned card file. I looked up our relative, stage and screen actor Morris Carnovsky, filled out a form, and was handed a file containing many original newspaper clippings and reviews with several different pictures, letters, and other information. They copied everything in the file for 25 cents a page. We were in and out in an hour with the most incredible information. They have information and books on people connected to every aspect of the industry.

I also have the same question. When in LA I found my great-grandfather's
(Fishel MEYER) arrival in the US in the book on Russian migrations to the US in 1884. His wife Rebecca came later with their daughter Esther, since the next child was born in 1888 in Albany, NY, she had to have come prior to 1888. I found a Chaya MEYER and ESTHER MEYER in 1887. Now although the only name that I have for her is Rebecca (Rivka) her name could well have been RIvka Chaya or she could have changed it out of superstition (to fool the angel of death as the voyage was dangerous). My other information said that Esther was born in March1885 (which is consistent with Fishel's arrival in 1884), so she would have been about 2 and a half in November of 1887. The passenger list (as produced in the book) had Esther's age of .16 (or about 2 months). This was the only Esther MEYER in the book. Any suggestions? Sarah L.Meyer Christiansen

The JRI-Poland SIG mailing list has moved to the new server, and there
was a post to the SIG about it. I have seen no such post to the h-sig, and, uncharacteristically, no messages today. So, this is a test to see if our old email address bounces. Sorry for the clutter in the mailboxes. Debbi

Varanno records August 1, 1998 There are some military records or "muster rolls" for those researching Vranov. The microfilm numbers are: 0629869 and 0629857 the Varanno Synogogue numbers are 1794330-31. The military records show the son and father's name, place of birth and current city of residence. I learned >from the Mayor of Humenne (Zemplen county) that the records are kept in Presov. Perhaps the Varanno records are also there. If you write to the archives in Bratislava, I was told they would route them to the appropriate local archives. Forms are available at the Mormon Family History Library. I have a Mendel Roth in my family tree, living in Tot Yablonka (Jablon today) about 16 miles north of Humenne. I hope my microfilm numbers are correct, but please check them. Good luck!
