Re: Rubbing and take pictures at Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY #photographs

Madeleine Isenberg

Before having people go out to photograph, aside from findagrave.com, billiongraves.com and JOWBR, I suggest checking also the resource of Jewishdata.com.  Some of the Jewish genealogy societies even have a complimentary license available to their dues-paying members.

There is a rather large size photo of Annie BLUMBERG's stone on that site.  It is a little hard to read, but still readable.

See: Instructions to Enumerators, 1930 Census:
https://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/census_instructions/1930_instructions.html

As for places of birth:  Paras 167-169 instruct the enumerator to list the country as it is today (1930) Not the country it was at the time of birth.  Make sure. for example,  that the answer "Russia" is not Estonia or Lithuania today.    It appears that the response to this follow up question was "Kiev" so  Russia is correct, and no addition or correction was required but he wrote the answer he received  anyway.

As for the three letters "M":  The letters he over-wrote are faint on the page  which I found on Ancestry.  I think his fountain pen was running out of ink. The first ball point pens appeared in 1947.

This page of the census is not the only one with corrections or additions.  Almost all are in the same handwriting as the original entries and it appears that he, himself did this as he went along.  The only exception seems to be on sheet 2, lines 13 - 17 where the correction has an initial letter that does not match.
As for the answers being correct or incorrect- The enumerator can only write what he hears.

I cannot identify what Poviaty Vil.  might be.  A village, a villa ?  And what is Sharkov JC?  It is from JewishGen.  This family I believe immigrated to the Philadelphia area and became Zipin.

I am working on a big tree to find everyone I can identify from Druja who came to the USA.

If you do not get a reply here, I'd suggest posting the letter (each page as its own post) on ViewMate, in the "translation-German" category.  Your comment can mention that there are two pages to the letter. You are very likely to get a response there

Where can I find information about Kivriz (in Volhynia) #ukraine #poland

gintrater@...

I am looking for the location and any other information about a shtetl called Kivritz (or Kivritc or Kiwritz).  I can't find it in the JewishGen town finder.  I know that it was in the Volhynia district, According to the only listing that included it, 500 Jews lived there before WWII.  See item 119 on page 6 in https://wolyn.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/%D7%99%D7%9C%D7%A7%D7%95%D7%98-%D7%95%D7%95%D7%94%D7%9C%D7%99%D7%9F-%D7%99%D7%90.pdf

My wife's late grandfather, Binyamin Tabak came from this shtetl. I know that he had brothers and sisters that migrated to America and Russia.  Possible names are Abraham and Bracha in Philadelphia and Riva in Russia.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Major new Wysokie Mazowieckie records extraction project launched #poland

Aaron Roetenberg

Long-time Wysokie Mazowieckie and area researchers will be pleased to learn that Jewish Records Indexing - Poland has undertaken a huge new “Phase 3” project to fully extract all Wysokie Mazowieckie birth, marriage, death and Alegata records from 1826 to 1939 (births up to 1920). To carry out this major initiative, we also have acquired scans (digital images) of currently available Wysokie Mazowieckie records in the Łomża branch of the Polish State Archives (up to 1910).

As Town Leader, it would be my pleasure to send you a full description of the project and explain how you will be able to obtain the extracts of your family records as they become available and before they go online.

I look forward to hearing from you.

David,

Just a note of a different possibility.  Someone else I know had the same family name.  I told her it was possibly a transliteration of rashe tevot (acronym) שו"ב, that would be pronounced that way.  But that the acronym was for the words, Shochet uVodek, שוחט ובודק, that is for a ritual slaughterer who also has to check that the animal was kosher.

So one could speculate that perhaps his father or an ancestor was a shochet.

Best Way to Retrieve a Birth Certificate from Vynohradiv, Ukraine #ukraine #subcarpathia #records

jeremylehmann89@...

Hi,

A cousin of mine is seeking advice about how to retrieve her father's birth certificate from 1924 in what is now Vynohradiv, Ukraine. The city was called Velky-Sevlus, Czechoslovakia during the 1920s and has since been part of Hungary, the Soviet Union, and currently Ukraine.

Is there anyone who specializes in retrieving documentation from this area of Europe (Subcarpathia)? This cousin contacted the website
http://jewishfamilysearch.com/ but unfortunately did not receive a response from them.

Any recommendations you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Jeremy Lehmann

Online Databases: Searching For Family Members named RUBIN Who Lived in Israel #records #israel

jeremylehmann89@...

Hi,

While researching my family, I have often had difficulty with finding information about cousins who lived in Israel. Are there databases online that contain information for people who lived in Israel?

A recent example is a cousin named Hans Rubin (b. 1914 in Tarnow), who was the only Holocaust survivor from his family. In 1957, he provided Yad Vashem testimony for his parents (https://yvng.yadvashem.org/nameDetails.html?language=en&itemId=483057&ind=1; https://yvng.yadvashem.org/nameDetails.html?language=en&itemId=1410161&ind=0) and brother (https://yvng.yadvashem.org/nameDetails.html?language=en&itemId=1676524&ind=1). He is listed as living in Bat Yam, Israel.

I would love to be able to learn more about Hans Rubin and whether he has any living descendants.

Thank you with any help you can provide!

Holocaust Survivors and Victims #holocaust

Hank Lobbenberg

Both of my grandmothers were killed in the camps (or en route). My paternal grandfather was beaten by a mob in July 1938 and died of his injuries in August 1938.
One of my aunts lived in Germany all of her life and never left. She was hidden. Both of my parents who were born in Germany, left as refugees in 1939.
What of those Jews who fled to Russia, Sweden or Shanghai?
The classifications may seem simple to some but no to me.

Jewish nannies from Europe #general

philafrum

Genners,

A first cousin, once removed, immigrated to England from Hamburg, Germany, to serve as a nanny.  She arrived in Britain on August 26, 1939 on a domestic permit (one of the few means of entry open to Jews fleeing Nazi persecution). Are there any accounts about these Jewish nannies and/or other individuals who entered through the "domestic service permit scheme."

Thank you.
