JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Dear Michael,
The ‘39 registry was during the Second World War because the 1931 Census burnt!
We are so very lucky that they made it available before one hundred years!

Some libraries provide access to the Ancestry Library Edition. By logging in through the library portal, I can access any record.
While I cannot add those records to my tree on Ancestry, I can save them to my computer. I have located quite a lot of records that have helped me locate family in Canada and London. The library may also provide access to Fold3, HeritageQuest and local newspapers. Laurie Sosna San Francisco, CA SOSNA: Ivonivka (near Yampil), Mogilev

I'm specifically looking for them before they came to the United States. I've already combed through Ancestry.com and familysearch.org and didn't find anything about them prior to being in Philadelphia in the early 1900s. Looking at Rose's grave, it looks like, from my understanding of Hebrew, it says "Daughter ot Rav Yosef Dovid" and I'm trying to find out more about them.

Searching for FRIEDMAN Family on Berriman Street in Brooklyn in the late 1920s
#usa
Judith27
Dear JewishGendom,
I am searching for a Friedman family which was last known to live at 163 Berriman Street in Brooklyn, NY, circa 1925-1928, at which point the genealogical trail grows very cold. In particular, I am searching for the brothers and sisters of Charles (Kaddish) Friedman, including:
(1) Abe Friedman ------ born May 1886 in Russia, 14 on the 1900 Census, and 19 on the 1905 Census. (2) Morris Friedman --- born April 1888 in Russia, 12 on 1900 Census, 21 on 1910 Census (3) Rose Friedman ---- born Jan 1898 in New York City, 3 on 1900 Census, 13 on 1910, 18 on 1915 (4) May Friedman ------ born 1899 in New York City, 1 on 1900 Census, 11 on 1910, 21 on 1925 (5) Frank Friedman ---- born about 1907, 3 on 1910, 8 on 1915, and 18 on 1925.
These five were all children of Isidore aka Edward Friedman and his wife Sarah Koskichovitch. The parents, Edward and Sarah Friedman, both died in the late 1920s and were buried at Mt. Zion, but none of their children are buried with them.
I have tried searching for possible birth, marriage, and death records via the usual web sites online including Ancestry, FamilySearch, and ItalianGen, but whenever I try to follow a promising trail and search further for census details usually a birth place or birth year doesn't jibe.
I'm hoping someone out there in JewishGen land may have knowledge of one or more of these Friedmans that will help flesh out this family tree.

Hi,
I know someone posted that there is a way to obtain the actual records from familysearch while sitting in a parking lot and logging in. I was wondering if there was anyone who could get this record of an aunt that passed away so we could find more info on her (grave, parent info, etc). Thanks, Michele Farkas Boynton Beach, FL This is what I found on FamilySearch

Hi Yoni,
Did you do DNA? My great grandparents were Aizik Horowitz married to Ester Kaufman from Minsk but I don't have any records of the names you mention. If there is a connection I would love to know, but DNA may be very helpful in your search and make sure you upload to gedmatch and other sites. Looking for the children of my uncle who disappeared during the Holocaust in Romania-Father Stauber, Mother Fischman

Hi group,
My late great uncle, Josef Maier Stauber, b. 1909 (parents Lazar Stauber and Czipre/Tipora Stauber), from Viseu De Jos (Also Visso) was married to Marta/Mindel Fischman b. ~ 1910 (parents Yenta Perl and Abraham Fischman) and they had 2 children, I believe sons. Mindel was killed in 1943 and I found her grave. My great uncle survived the camps and came here after and lived with my father and his parents (his mother was Josef's oldest sister). All through childhood I knew about these young children, but his sons from his second marriage never did until I told them and I was the younger cousin so they were quite shocked. We all did DNA (FTDNA, MH, uploaded to Gedmatch) and I have searched the Arolson Archives as best as I could. Any idea if there are any other resources to find out about these children, if only to remember their names for Yahrzeits. They would have been born probably in the 1930s so the birth records are not online yet due to privacy laws. Thanks for any and all help. We found a lot of Canadian records for our relatives there on Ancestry, but I had also already found many of them on FamilySearch. I suggest you try it for 6 months but remember to calendar the renewal date and cancel it beforehand as many of these sites do automatic renewal and once they bill your credit card you can't get a refund. Also, we pooled our resources, my cousin pays for the Ancestry and I pay for MyHeritage and we share info. Also, my cousin put up a private tree on Ancestry bc she had some hunches and ended up getting hints so make sure you have your latest version up when you start your membership. Also when emailing people through their system (you can only contact people through their server unlike FTDNA) always include your email so if you discontinue after the 6 months people can continue to contact you (see if you can add it to a bio if they allow as well). Try tag teaming it to save money. All the other suggestions on here are great too. What a wonderful community we have!

Trying to identify Congregation Ben Menashe LES
#galicia
Alan Reische
I’ve been able to determine that my great grandfather was buried in a Washington Cemetery subplot for the members of Congregation Bnei Menashe (or Menasche) which in 1902 was located at 89 Ridge Street in the LES. He and his family lived close by this location in the late 19th Century. The same congregation or its successors were later relocated to 289 East 4th and 159 Attorney Street. (This information comes from the WPA survey of churches and synagogues.)
The following names are affiliated with Ben Menashe in the WPA records: Nachlath/Nachlas Zvi/Zevie B'nai Israel Linath Hazedek B'nai/Bnei Menasheh/Menasche I’ve reviewed the municipal records for backup to the WPA survey without finding anything further about this congregation. I’ve unsuccessfully attempted to trace its records through funeral homes that might have historical information. I’ve also searched the YIVO index, again with no results. Is anyone familiar with it and in particular, with its affiliation with specific towns or regions in Galicia? Based on other records, it appears my great grandfather migrated from the general area of Rzeszow, but I don’t have confirmation of that. (I’m mindful of the possibility that cemetery plots may from time to time have been purchased by non-members.) As always, I’ll appreciate any further information members can provide. Karen - if you know specific addresses in both Berlin and Leipzig, you can google them. I was happy to see that several of the addresses of my my father's Berlin family and my mother's Leipzig family look exactly the same as they did pre-Holocaust. But it was also shocking to realize that this is therefore also exactly how their homes and streets looked when they were deported. I have visited these places in person too.
