#belarus
Leonid Smilovitsky <smilov@...>
Dear All!
I work at the Center for Diaspora at Tel Aviv University, where I lead a project to study Belarusian Jewry (since 1995). Now I am collecting material for my new book ON THE FOLLOWINGS OF THE JEWISH CEMETERY OF BELARUS. It is very important for me to see and hear everything related to Jewish life before and after 1917 (cemetery, synagogue, mikvah, Jewish buildings, monuments to the victims of the Holocaust), including a museum (local history or amateur at school), to listen to the story of local residents. In August of this year, I visited Belarus. May I ask you a favor to share with me by any data dealing with the Jewish life in Svisloch and Lipen (formerly Kholui) of the Osipovichi district of the Mogilev region? I hope for an early reply. This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page
#general
Bruce Drake
The New York Times reported last week that "for years, there have been
fragmentary reports of almost unbelievable acts of faith at the Nazi death camps during World War II: the sounding of shofars... traditionally blown by Jews to welcome the High Holy Days." Experts found these accounts credible and a shofar said to have been blown at one of the camps is part of a traveling expedition with a stop at New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage. (You can see the article here: https://nyti.ms/2kYS0Up) Such a memory is recorded in a chapter >from the Yizkor book of Strzyzow, Poland titled "'Kol Nidre" in Auschwitz." The Jews of the camp had "had promised ourselves for a long time that this year we would conduct Kol Nidrei services," and, those who could, gathered in one of the barracks to offer their prayers. >from outside they could hear wailing -- the sounds of 4,000 suffering and naked women being marched to the crematorium. The rabbi's "voice was heard in the stillness of the barracks as if an echo was responding to the wailing of the women. His voice sounded clearly and when he reached the verse: 'who shall perish by fire...' -- a lamentation came out of everyone's throat, repeating the Rabbi's words as if >from the world beyond." "And suddenly, in the middle of the prayers, the sound of the shofar was heard." After the services were over ... "The crematoriums, which were surrounded by a grove, were burning all night. The ovens were not big enough." URL: https://www.facebook.com/JewishGen.org/posts/2539514639404009 Bruce Drake Silver Spring MD Researching: DRACH, EBERT, KIMMEL, ZLOTNICK Towns: Wojnilow, Kovel
