Defunct landsmanschaften #general

It is my understanding that the records >from the NY State Insurance Dept.
concerning defunct landsmanschaften are very frequently found at the YIVO
Institute in Manhattan. I would telephone them first.
Good luck all, Carol Raspler, Delray Beach, FL

Jim Gutterman is correct ("in NY defunct societies were "overseen" by NYS
insurance dept liquidation bureau...").

The Town of Sarny #general

Rita

We would like to find some information about the town of Sarny
originally in Poland. What happened to the Jews of Sarny ? Were they
sent to a concentration camp?

We are trying to trace my grandfather's half brother Hieronin Wasserman son
Of Abram & Sura Laski ,born Plock,1897 & his family. We have recently found
his nephew a survivor, whom we knew nothing about. He tells us that they
used to visit His uncle in Sarny, where he was married with a daughter.
Hieronin was either A school teacher or a professor, possibly the latter.
There is a PoT in Yad Vashem for him, but we do not know where he perished
Or what happened to his wife & daughter.

Does anyone know anything of him & his family or any suggestions as to
Where I can find information.

I have contacted Plock Archives & am waiting for any information that they
May have & I have also contacted Bad Arolson but have not at this stage
had a reply. I was not aware that he was living in Sarny until recently,
so maybe there is somewhere else I can look.

Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

Cemetery plots of deunct landsmanshaften #general

Jerome Seligsohn <jselig1315@...>

Several years ago the New York State Dept of Insurance forwarded to
YIVO a listing of plots legally given to NYState upon the legal
dissolution of the landsmanshaft as required by the laws of NY State.
The remaining unused graves were then sold back to the cemeteries at
almost nominal costs. I was in charge of placing the papers in preexisting
collections and to place in RG 123 the papers for which there was no
archival collections. I would appreciate it if those landsmanshaften which
have not gone through the expensive cost of legal dissolution would find
a way to forward their remaining records for archiving at YIVO.

Earlier today I posted a request for help in locating Mania Nadel.
The Moderator on Duty Gesher Galicia Mailing List pointed out that the
Page of Testimony written by Mania Nadel was for a different Regina
Dimant. This Regina Dimant was born 1907, father Heinrich, mother
Tina). According to Zygmunt, his mother (Regina Dimant) was born in
1887 to Moshe and Eva.

The moderator further points out that Mania Nadel lived in Haifa in
1955, when she wrote the POT. The Mania Nadel you found in the Social
Security Death Index lived in Brooklyn in 1955, according to her
naturalization index card on Ancestry.

Based on the above observations, I would like to respectfully withdraw
my request for help. I have to do more homework.

Beirut Jewish cemetery online #sephardic

Jeff at SG

In 1948 there were 24,000 Jews living in Lebanon, mostly in Beirut.
Today there are only 30 elderly individuals living in fear and the only
remaining vestiges of the Jewish community are the Magen Abraham
synagogue and the Jewish cemetery of Beirut. During the Lebanese civil
war the cemetery (in which a total of 3,300 Jews were buried) served as
a the boundary of the Christian Phalange forces, and though damaged by
bombs, was never desecrated by either side.

Nagi Georges Zeidan, a Lebanese Christian, undertook the task of
memorializing the Lebanese Jewish Community by researching its history
and creating a database of 3,184 tombstone inscriptions using both the
cemetery and civil registrations. The database is now part of the many
searchable databases in SephardicGen at

http://www.sephardicgen.com/databases/BeirutCemeterySrchFrm.html

Sip utca 13 #hungary

Beth Long

Yesterday I was at the Budapest Jewish Community office at Sip utca, and had an
interesting meeting with someone whose job is interfacing with with international
Jewish community on matters having to do with Hungary.

I shared with him a few experiences I have had while trying to obtain information
at Sip utca, and I few ideas I had for perhaps making the place a little more
"user-friendly".

He gave me his contact information so that the rest of you can share any experiences
you have had there (whether positive or negative), and any suggestions you might
have.

My own suggestion was to take the (already computerized) database of Budapest
Jewish records, and put it online so that people could do their own research
(rather than having to rely on the two ladies in the office to do it for them).

His name is Tamas Desi, and his e-mail is foreign@....

Best Wishes to All,

Beth Long

LDS records on CD #galicia

I need to examine the LDS records for Tarnopol that have not been
indexed by the JRI project. Spending time at one of the LDS Family
History Centers is not practical. I wonder if anybody has managed
to obtain those records on a CD and would be interested in sharing
them. Please contact me privately.

Is anyone going to the Montefiore Cemetery (aka Spingfield Long

get a photo of the tombstones to see if there is any helpful info on
them? I have the names and grave plot #.

I appreciate the assistance.

Thanks to Viewmate Webmasters #general

Beth Galleto

When I first started looking at Viewmate, the generous viewers who
wanted to help would send their responses directly to the person who
posted the letters or photos, and unless they wrote to the JewishGen
list, the answers were not visible to anyone else.

A little while ago the site was changed so that everyone can see the
translations and other contributions, and I would like to express my
appreciation to the Viewmate webmasters for this new feature.
I "visit" Viewmate nearly every day, and I have often wondered if
people received answers, and what they were. Plus, an answer given to
one person may sometimes provide help to another who has a similar photo
or item.

Thank you to all who made this new sharing feature possible.
