I would further strongly suggest that all posters to various SIG lists credit and attribute sources of material and text they are providing. with best wishes Schelly Talalay Dardashti dardasht1@yahoo.com Tracing the Tribe - The Jewish Genealogy Blog http://tracingthetribe.blogspot.com --------------------------- Original message ------------------------- Subject: SEEKING OCHBERG ORPHAN DESCENDANTS >from SOUTH AFRICA From: Michelle Essers essersfam@gmail.com Date: Sun, 9 May 2010 21:25:54 +0300 David Solly Sandler of Australia is seeking 2,000 South Africans - descendants of 60 Russian Polish and Ukrainian war and pogrom orphans, known as Ochberg's Orphans. In 1921, Isaac Ochberg, representative of the South African Jewish Community, travelled to Poland and the Ukraine and brought back with him to Cape Town 167 "Russian, Ukraine and Polish War and Pogrom Orphans" plus 14 "attendants and nurses," mainly older siblings. Half the children were placed in the care of the Cape Jewish Orphanage (later Oranjia) and half went to Johannesburg, under the care of the South African Jewish Orphanage (later Arcadia). Many children were adopted by Jewish community members, who contributed generously to a fund to bring the children to South Africa and care for them. Of the 181 children, the stories of 90 have been recorded, contact has been made with another 30, but 60 still remain to be contacted. What is really important in this story is that many descendants might not know their connection to the Ochberg Orphans. Some did not often speak about this and many tried to hide the fact >from their children because of the stigma of being an orphan. Today, half of the 2,000 descendants live around the world in Israel, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Here are the names of these orphans. If you have someone with this name in your family tree, born c1910, there's a chance you might be an Ochberg Orphan descendant, so read the list carefully and if you find a name of interest, contact David (email below). -- BARMATCH Sara, BARUCH Leya, BERNFELD Hersh, -- CWENGEL Saul, -- ELMAN Blume, ELMAN Jentl/ Izzy, ELSHTEIN Abo, ENGELMAN Jakob, -- FREMD/FRIEND Max, -- GARBUS /GOLDSTEIN Shmul, GAYER Chawa, GEBENCOL/GOLZ Rochel, GERYNSHTEIN Abram, GINSBURG Mintcha, GUBER/GEIBER/GRUBER Tcharna (Charlotte ODES), -- H/GURWITZ Rosa, -- ISRAELSON Chaim, -- JUDES Rubin, -- KAHAN Channe, KAHAN Golda, KAHAN Morduch/Mordche, KAHAN Shachna, KAILER Rywka, KAUFMAN Cypora, KAUFMAN Soloman/Shlama, KAWERBERG Mayer, KAWERBERG Mees/Moshe, KIGIELMAN Jacob, KNUBOVITZ Zlata, KREINDEL Rejsel, KRUGERr Rejsel, KRUGER Abram, KRUGER Jacob, -- LIPSHIS Moishe, LIPSHYTZ Perel, -- MARGOLIN Sara, MILER Braindel, MORDOCHOWITCH Gutro, MORDOCHOWITCH Estel, -- NUDERMAN Gdalia, -- OCHSTEIN Salomon, ORLIANSKY Abram, -- PERRCHODNIK/PERECHODNIK Ussr, PINSKY/PINSKA Faywel, PINSKY/PINSKA Feyga (Birdie GLASER), PINSKY/PINSKA Maisha, PINSKY/PINSKA Zlata, -- REICHMAN Abram, REICHMAN Chaim, REISENDERRubin, REKLER Leya, RINSLER/RINZLER Chaskiel/Chaykel, ROSENBAUM Leon, ROSENBLIT Gdalia, ROSENBLIT Szamay, -- Y/J/SAGOTKOWSKY Jacob/Jacov, SCHTERN/SHTERN Szlema/Solomon, SCHWARZ Josef, SHTEINER/STEINER Chaskel, SHTEINER/STEINER Hersh, SHTEINER/SZTEINER/STEINER Isaac, SMITH Morduch/Mordche, SHTRASNER Feyga, STILLERMAN Hersh/Harry, -- TREPPEL Jacob -- WEIDMAN Sheindel. Seeking information on location of lost relative
#france
asleuth@...
In the 1920s and 1930s several relatives immigrated to France >from Russia.
They were all members of the same family although not all were directly related to each other. I have been able to trace all but two of these relatives. Dr. Nicholai (Nicholas) Gabrilowitz/Gabrilowitsch/Gavrilovic and Pauline/Poula Gabrilowitsch seem to have disappeared without a trace. The last Pauline was heard >from was when she traveled >from Paris to the U.S. to visit her brother and returned to Paris in the 1930s and attended his funeral in the U.S. in 1936. I have documents showing her traveling with another brother who lived in Italy at the time. How would I find out what happened to Pauline and Nicholai? Anita Drexler Houston, Texas searching Gabrilowitsch, Gabrilowitz, Gabrilovich and other variations of the name in France (Paris and St. Cloud among the places they are listed as living.)

Singer, Matthew <MSinger@...>
Dear GerSig members:
My apologies--I should have included this with yesterday's inquiry re: Martin WETZLER. Justus EPSTEIN was another fraktur-artist/scrivener working in the "Pennsylvania Dutch Country" in the mid-nineteenth century. Should a descendant or relative of Mr. EPSTEIN be a member of GerSig, I'd be enormously grateful to hear >from her or him. Again, this is for doctoral work I'm pursuing re: the encounter between Ashkenazi Jews and Pennsylvania Germans in the so-called "Pennsylvania Dutch Country" from the eighteenth through early-twentieth centuries. With thanks, Matt Singer Philadelphia, PA MSinger@philamuseum.org

SAPIRSTEIN: Hamburg > USA, July 1897. Family Mystery
#general
Lynne Schneider
My dear Genners,
I am trying to solve these family mysteries and have exhausted my capabilities. My pgm, Eva and her sister Anya Sapirstein are documented as arriving in the US on the Phoenicia out of Hamburg in July 1897. The Passenger list shows these sisters as "Sore" or "Sara" and "Chewel" Sapirstein. They are listed on the Hamburg Passenger Lists as Sore or Sara and Chewel, as well. These two young women are definitely my grandmother and her sister, whatever their names were on manifests as all other Phoenicia manifest information places them within the family. Eva signed her name on her marriage certificate as â??Evaâ??. Oral family history has always been that their mother, Dvora Walzer Sapirstein, followed later and was not happy in US, took the younger sister (Anya) back to Russia. I have searched Ellis Island, Philadelphia, Boston, and Baltimore arrivals and cannot find Dvora's arrival in US which would have been sometime after July 1897. I have also considered the possibility that Dvora sailed with her daughters and was just listed on a different page of the manifest. Alas, she is nowhere to be found. I have also tried all the spelling variants of Dvora and Sapirstein I could think of. I am hoping that a reverse search will be more successful. My question: Is there a database of passengers leaving the US and returning to Russia? Question Two: Which office would have been the responsible immigrant processing center in July, 1897, the Barge Office or Castle Garden (since the fire at Ellis Island shut it down between June 1897 and December 1900)? Another mystery: Anya Sapirstein married (unknown man), had a son (unkown name). Neither her husband nor her son survived the wars in Europe. Somehow she made her way to Israel and during the early 1960s my grandmother was contacted by an agency in Israel in an attempt to reunite the sisters. To make a long story short, Anya came to the US and stayed for about 2 months and then went home to Israel. That is the last information I have about her. I do not know the name of the agency that contacted our family nor do I know where she lived in Israel. I believe that my grandfather, Anya's brother-in-law, Morris Datz, contributed to Anya's living expenses in Israel. I have no idea when she died. Question Three: With so little to go on, is there a way to find out more? Any and all information and guidance is truly appreciated. Thank you. I am seeking descendants of a Wolpert family, so that I can pass along
information regarding their family tree and history. I have run into dead ends on a few of the family lines. If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me a note. - Descendants of Julius SACKS (Yehuda SACHS), >from Russia, a rabbi in New York City >from about 1903-1918. He and his wife Mollie (Malke) had children Annie (b. 1886-1889), Rebecca (b. 1889-1891) and Samuel (b. 1892-1895). Last record found was the 1910 census. Sacks is not the family's original surname; they are not related to other Sacks or Zacks families. - Descendants of Sheine Gute and Israel STROMBERG (both b. 1850s), from Russia, living in New York City >from the 1890s to about 1910, when the trail disappears. They had children Sarah, Isaac and Sam (all of whom I have traced), Gus or Gussie (b. abt. 1883) and 3 other children - possibly including Ida (b. abt. 1877) and Dora (b. abt. 1883). They might also have had a daughter Mollie (Mrs. Isaac KOPPLEMAN, b. abt 1877). The descendants could have had connections to Boston, MA or Rochester, NY. The original family name was Strimling and they were >from Shavel (Siauliai). Sheine may have also been called Jennie or Sadie. Information on the children ended with the 1900 or 1910 census records. - Descendants of Ethel STROMBERG (b. 1906-1907), daughter of Isaac and Anna Stromberg, sister of Milton, >from Massachusetts. Information ended with the 1920 census. Thank you. Laurel Singer San Ramon, CA
