Andrew Jakubowicz <Andrew.Jakubowicz@...>
Dear colleagues
In 1978 when I visited Yad Vashem there was an exhibition of the Lodz Ghetto - including a cyclorama. Alexander Avraham notes in his work on the Lodz ghetto records that there was an exhibition that lasted for two years at Yad Vashem. When I was there in 2005 the exhibition had long gone. In the exhibition which I visited with my late father and mother was a small chamber quartet, four chairs and music stands and music: including a flyer for a concert. One of the violinist's names was that of my grandmother Malka Jakubowicz who was murdered at Chelmno in September 1942. I wonder if anyone on the Lodz list knows how I could track down this flyer and get a copy and other relevant objects that may have been saved? Janova by Frances SENIOR Melamed, a book recommendation
#lithuania
Susan Goldsmith
Dear SIG,
I have just had an opportunity to read Janova by Jonava-born Frances SENIOR Melamed z"l. The book was published by Janova Press, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1976, ISBN 0-917294-01-7. I recommend the book to those researching families >from Jonava, and also >from Lithuania, generally. The subject matter is distinctive in that it focuses on the period prior to WWI, and on the Russian government's 1914 order for Jews to leave their homes within hours, before the arrival of the advancing German Army, out of Russian fear that the Jews would support the Germans. It brings alive the harrowing exodus >from Jonava (and other towns) and the journey to Chernigov in the Ukraine as well as the equally arduous return to a changed Jonava in 1920. The author, born into the SENIOR family in about 1895, provides a detailed description of family life, childhood activities, relationships within the community, and daily life in the first years of the 20th century. What is quite remarkable and moving is that the author was a writer at heart, even in her early years. She made and kept notes of her observations which she brought with her to the United States. After a full life, she returned to these notes and wrote as freshly as though she were still in the haim. In addition to the SENIOR family, other families mentioned in the book are SISITSKY, BLAKHONSKY, BURAK, SABLOVITZ, GINSBURG, LUBIN, and in Chernigov, RIVIN and FRAIDIN. If you wish to obtain a copy of the book please write me privately and I will forward your message to the publisher Rita Edlin. I have no financial interest in the book. Best Regards, Susan Goldsmith GOLDSHMIDT,GITTES (GADIE,GADYE,GIDUT,GDUD), F(P)ILVINSKY, SHLOMOVICH, DRUSKOVICH, LANGMAN, NEKRITZ, RANDMAN, ROCHELSON, ZHIZSMORSKI, ZUKHOVSKI Lithuania: Seta, Kaunas, Jonava, Ukmerge, Vandziogala, Kedainiai, Krakes, Adutiskis, Zemaiciu Naumiestes TOBIAS, ROZHANSKY, MIRANSKY, BILINSKY, FOGEL, PROTAS, RUSEK, TRIBUKH Belarus: NovyySverzhen, Stolbtsy, Mir, Yasevichi, GUREWICZ, DRASNAN Belarus: Dolginovo, Vileika Above names + TSOREF, AMORON, LUKMAN, ZILBOVITZ Israel

A film about Siauliai, courtesy of Tomek Wisniewski

Steven Lasky <steve725@...>
One of the twenty short films I am currently showing within my virtual
Museum of Family History is one about Siauliai, Lithuania, entitled "Jewish Szawle Siauliai." The film created by Tomek Wisniewski, is worth seeing. The film is eight minutes long and is accompanied by a wonderful Yiddish song that should be familiar to those of us who know Yiddish music. You can find the link to this film and all the others on the main page I've created for Tomek at www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/tomek/films.htm Enjoy! Different names - same person?
#lithuania
Denise Fletcher <dfletcheroz@...>
I have located two Vital Records references to my late grandmother,
Leah Fletcher (Fleiserine / Fleysher). One is her internal passport record, which lists her maiden name as Binsky, which is what we've always believed it to be. However, I've subsequently found the birth record for one of my uncles (born in 1925), and here her maiden name is listed as Vainsteinyte [Vainshtein]. We have no knowledge of her having been married before, and the internal passport record is from 1920, when she was already married to my grandfather, Benjamin Fletcher (Binjominas Fleseris /Beniamin Flesher) Can anyone shed any light on this discrepancy and any possible reasons for it? The family lived in Balberieskis (Balberishok). Thanks & regards Denise Fletcher Sydney, Australia Researching: Fletcher (Fleiseras / Fleysher) and Novozhenetz.
