Vinnitsa State Archives: Advice needed
#general
ssroth@...
Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone has had experience obtaining records from the Vinnitsa State Archives. I would like to ask for all the records for 2 surnames >from the record sets (for 4 towns) identified by Miriam Weiner on her website Routes to Roots. 1. Can one contact the Vinnitsa Archives by email in English? 2. Must one try to find the records in person or hire a researcher, or can an employee of the archives look up and send you the records requested? 3. Is this expensive? 4. Where to begin? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. Please email me privately if recommending researchers. Sheree Roth Palo Alto, CA Looking for: SHUSTERMAN and WACHNOVETSKY >from Dzyun'kov, Pogrebishche, Nova Pryluka and Vakhnovka

Need help looking for family

Carol Rombro Rider
With all the new people researching their roots, I see that it is
time to remind all "newbies" that one of the first things they need to do is to check a particular file out on JewishGen. Please go to JewishGen "Info Files". Once there, click on "Topics" and >from there click on "Basics". Under "Basics" you will see something called "A Genealogical Fable by Dan Leeson". It is still one of the best ways to orient new researchers in their research. And if you are an "oldie" when it comes to researching, go back and read it also. It will remind you that not all is found on JewishGen or the internet. Carol Rombro Rider Baltimore, Maryland USA CRomRider@aol.com

Share your visit to Carpathian Ukraine or Romania
#general
allenalex@...
I would like to visit the birthplaces of 3 of my grandparents less
than 100 miles apart but separated by the Carpathian mountains -- in what was the Marmures region of Hungary (now Romania) and Galicia, Austria (now Ukraine). To help me plan a trip, please share with me your experience if you have visited the following communities or nearby towns in recent years. I am especially interested in any journey you made across the mountains by car or otherwise in this region. Ukraine: was Mikolojow (now Mikolaiv) (49-31'x 23-59'); located on the Dniestr River; midway between Lviv and Strij on national road 17. Nearby towns or cities: Rozdol; Drogobic ; Stryj. Romania: Tirsolt (was Tartolcz, Hungary) (47-57'x 23-21'); Calinesti-Oas (was Kanyahaza, Hungary) (47-54'x 23-18'). Nearby towns or cities: Bixad; Negresti-Oas; Satu Mare; Sighetu. Please contact me privately with experiences (disappointments welcome too), suggestions and recommendations at: [allenalex@cox.net]. Allen HAUSMAN, Alexandria, Virginia USA JG Researcher 14033

Dear All
Back in January, I posted on ViewMate a snippet >from a UK census which was the name of a town in Germany. I asked for suggestions as to what it might be. I received 12 responses, resulting in 9 different suggestions but never actually posted to thank all those who contributed. I'm very grateful for your opinions, although such a wide range hasn't really brought us much progress. Nevertheless, it's always so reassuring to know that there are so many people out there willing to help. Wishing you all luck in your research Saul Marks Liverpool, England
