Name APTEKARZ #poland

Harold Lewin

I would like to like thank all the kind people who replied to my query
on the Polish name Aptekarz. The generally agreed meaning is one who
dispenses drugs or medicines, i.e. druggist. In my wife's family the
name had become distorted into something like Uptekash but perhaps
that is nearer to the Polish pronounciation.

Harold Lewin - Jerusalem.

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Since the original query has been thoroughly answered,
this thread is ended.

Maybe the following is relevant:
1. I remember that there was an APTEKER family in Belgium (I think it was
in Antwerp) when I was a kid.
2. The origin might be the French Apothicaire, or the Dutch Apotheker (?),
both meaning pharmacist.
My 2 cents.

Hi, I am new the SA SIG and have a quandary.

My gf told me he and his whole family were born in Balta Russia
and the last name DEKTOR was pronounced Dehktyar -
meaning approximately wagon wheel mender.
At the conference I went to in Jerusalem, many people told me
that DEKTOR was a Romanian not Russian name and that there
were many DEKTOR's in So Africa, having come there >from Romania.

I am finally at a point in my life where I can devote more time to my
paternal line. Solomon DEKTOR my ggf married Rose KATZ
(daughter of Abraham and Esther KATZ) and they had 9 children all born
in Balta. The entire family immigrated to the US in 1904.

I have never been able to go back farther than Solomon. I do not know
if he had siblings, where he was born, his parents names, etc.

Does anyone in the SA SIG recognize the name Solomon DEKTOR as perhaps a
relative of someone in their family? Could he have been >from Romania and not
Balta?

Thank you,

Is anyone familiar with either of these places? I have found nothing in

Fw: Furniture manufacturer in Manchester c. 1936 #unitedkingdom

Angie Elfassi

Hi

Im trying to trace, and this is quite a long shot, a family who lived in
Manchester c. 1936. They had possibly a furniture shop, or they manufactured
furniture. The father's name was Nathan, and he had 4 children (maybe more) - 2

daughters - Rebecca and Lily, and 2 sons, names not known.

If the above flimsy info rings a bell with any, even if its nothing to do with
furniture, please let me know. The street Cheetham Hill Road was also
mentioned.

The info was supplied by a dear cousin who is over 90, has all her faculties,
but maybe some of the info has got distorted over time.

Thanks in advance

Dear Rita,

The location is most likely Kartuz Bereza (Byaroza today) also known as
