Re: News of deportations and survivors #general

Robert Fraser <rwfgjf@...>

Dear Friends -

In his book 'Factory of Death' by Rudolf Vrba (of which I have a
tattered paperback copy), the author, who survived and escaped
from Auschwitz, reports that he prepared and delivered a report
on the deportation of Hungarian Jews. The report went to the
Slovakian Papal Nuncio and >from there to Pope Pius XII. From
there, it went to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill
and US President Roosevelt. On June 25 1944, a complaint was
delivered to Admiral Horthy (which was not answered)

On July 7, Anthony Eden reported to the House of Commons that
'700,000 to 1 million' Hungarian Jews were in the process of
extermination.

First, can anyone please tell me when news of the deportations
from Hungary in 1944, and in particular >from Chust and surrounding
area >from mid-May to early-June, is likely to have become generally
known in England, beyond the inner workings of the British Government
and the military High Command?

Correction about Novoye Misto film #ukraine

steve725@...

I previous announced two films having to do with Ukraine, but it seems that
one of them is about Bialystok in Poland and not the Ukraine, i.e. the one
about Novoye Misto. It seems that the word "miasto" in Polish, means "city"
and is not the name of the town that is portrayed in this film.
At least the film about Olyka is correct. Olyka was in Poland pre-WWII, but
after the War and now is in the Ukraine.
Sorry about the mistake. I'll inform you if and when more films about the
Ukraine get uploaded to my site.

The annual memorial meeting for Skalat will take place Thursday at five
in the afternoon, at the Skalat monument in the Holon cemetery, near Tel-

For those of you abroad this is the second day of Shavuot and many of you
will be saying Yizkor at the same time as our memorial meeting. If you
have Skalat connections, you might want to keep them in mind at that
time.

Warning about unscrupulous researchers! #romania

Dear All,

>from time to time it has proved necessary for us to post
the usual warning about unrequested approaches from
individuals who claim to be professional researchers in Romania, who see a
posting asking for information about a certain family, or town records, and
offer to help. The few legitimate professionals do *not* use this
approach.

Should you receive such a message volunteering services or information,
either >from an individual or an "organzation", please contact the
Co-Coordinators of this SIG *before* replying to them in any way, for
more information. Even a posting on the List, or recommendation on the
JewishGen Blog, about a particular researcher should first be checked with
your Coordinators!

It appears necessary to remind all that this is a ***private*** mailing
list. Only those subscribed to it are entitled to receive the messages
that their fellow subscribers post. To forward any message you read
here to someone not subscribed to the list is a violation of the privacy
of the subscriber, a violation of JewishGen rules and policy, and more
importantly a violation of the trust we place in each other by revealing
our interests and sometimes family "secrets".

We expect each and every one of you to honor the privacy and trust we
place in each other.

Private responses to requests on the List are permitted, but
even those should be checked first with the Coordinators!

searching for COONEYs #usa

Dear Subscribers of Early/American SIG,

I have recently joined JewishGen and I was wondering whether anyone can help
me look for my long lost cousins. Research has already been carried
out on the relevant ancestry but I have hit a stone wall when trying to
find descendants and so any help anyone could give me, would be gratefully
received.

In short, I am looking for descendants of the following Cooneys (listed
below) whose name in Vitebsk was Kunin but who changed their name to COONEY
in London U.K. before migrating to the USA in around 1910. The story goes
like this:= my great grandmother Sarah (who was already widowed >from Chaim
Zev Kunin who had already died in Vitebsk prior to 1900) left Vitebsk in
1900 for London U.K. with her five young children: Abe born in 1889 (my
grandfather), Barnett born in 1891, Minnie, Rebecca and Annie =96 I have no
dates for the three daughters but I do know that Minnie married in New York
a Mr Eisenberg. We also know that Barnett, known as Barney went to live in
Canada, married and had children. After ten years in London, Sarah with her
five children went to New York via Ellis Island.= But I have reason to
believe that Minnie had already gone before because according to the ship
records they were going to stay with their brother-in-law Mr Eisenberg.

Subsequently, my grandfather Abe Cooney came back to London, married my
grandmother, Annie, and they went on to have three children, one of whom
was my father.

I am not at home at the moment and am using a friend's computer and so
please could replies be sent to: Judith_deutsch@yahoo.com.au

Many thanks for your kind attention, Yours sincerely,

Judith Deutsch (nee Cooney). JewishGen ID: 225154 Judith_deutsch@yahoo.com.au

Seaching for descendants or relatives of Justus EPSTEIN #usa

Dear Early American SIG members:

My apologies--I should have included this with my earlier inquiry re:
Martin WETZLER. Justus EPSTEIN was another Jewish
fraktur-artist/scrivener working in the "Pennsylvania Dutch Country" in
the mid-nineteenth century.

Should a descendant or relative of Mr. Epstein be a member of Early
American SIG, I'd be enormously grateful to hear >from her or him. Again,
this is for doctoral work I'm pursuing re: the encounter between
Ashkenazi Jews and Pennsylvania Germans in the so-called "Pennsylvania
Dutch Country" >from the eighteenth through early-twentieth centuries.

With thanks for your attention,

Matt Singer, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Good day to all the listers,
I am returning to the group with information concerning my grandfather
BRAUN or BRAUNSTEIN, I was told that it is possible, but not certain that
he changed his name >from BRAUNSTEIN to BRAUN upon arriving in the U.S.A.

I am now quite certain that my grandfather's birth date is March 26, 1890,
death in California September 23 1971. His marriage certificate states
that his mother was Anna TURFOE or TRUFOE, and his father
Alexander. John Paul, my grandfather, married in New York.John Paul BRAUN,
married at age 44, to Elizabeth Rose Fitzpatrick. He was a Jew according to
my mother, born in Berlin Germany his family had something to do with a
chocolate factory there. John had a twin brother so it seems. Physically, he
had was a red head. He spoke several languages,
nd his trade said to be a pipe fitter. It seems that he traveled alot before
settling down in N.Y. city. He had addresses at 1725 Fulton Ave. in N.Y.
in 1934. then in Washington Heights N.Y. and in the Bronx,In the late 1950s

Book called a "must read for genealogists" out in paperback #general

Steve Luxenberg

Dear Genners,

While speaking around the country at various Jewish Genealogical Societies, I've
had a chance to talk with many members of this listserv. Mindful of the good rule
allowing authors a one-time mention of a new book, several have urged me to let
Genners know of the paperback publication of my award-winning book, "Annie's
Ghosts: A Journey Into a Family Secret."

Calling the book "a great non-fiction read for genealogists," Jan Alpert,
president of the National Genealogical Society, wrote in the society's July
newsletter: "Steve Luxenberg discloses his interview techniques in the book,
which may help you in conducting oral interviews. Annie's Ghosts will provide
you with different ways to look at some of your research problems."

At my talks for genealogical societies in New York City, Orlando, San Diego,
Michigan and Ventura County, Calif., attendees were particularly interested in
how I used "Morning Reports" to reconstruct my father's Army whereabouts in
World War II. (Morning Reports are describe the daily comings and goings of
personnel in each Army unit.)

While no substitute for personnel records (most WWII Army personnel records
were destroyed in the 1973 fire at the St. Louis facility), the Morning Reports
do provide leads that might be helpful. Similarly, the VA may have records for
WWII soldiers who received a disability discharge soldiers. Neither the VA records
nor the Morning Reports were among the records destroyed in the fire.

"Annie's Ghosts" tells the true story of how my mother hid the existence of a
disabled sister. I use genealogical techniques to understand my mother's
motivations, to reconstruct my aunt's unknown life and to describe the social
forces at work. The book was named to the Washington Post's Best Books of 2009
list and honored as a Michigan Notable Book for 2010. It has been featured on
NPR's All Things Considered, in Parade Magazine and widely reviewed in major
publications.

Available at all bookstores and >from online book sellers.

For more information, including documents and photos of genealogical interest,
please visit my website, steveluxenberg.com.
