Benveniste family of Narbonne, Aragon and Castile #general

Graham <grahammilne001@...>

Does anyone have any information on the genealogy of the BENVENISTE
family of Narbonne, who are later found in Aragon and Castile, and
particularly the links between these branches? An Abraham Benveniste
was Court Rabbi under Juan II of Castile and several were referred to
as 'Nasi' ('Prince'), including Sheshet Benveniste of Narbonne (d.
about 1209). Is there any link between the Benveniste family and the
Todros/Kalonymos family of Narbonne?

See http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=3D777&letter=3DB for
further info, which says that Sheshet Benveniste and Nasi Kalonymus b.
Todros corresponded.

PS One of my ancestors Don Abraham Senior of Castile (1412-1493) is
described by Heinrich Graetz in his 'History of The Jews' (Vol. IV p.
228) as 'an influential Jew, Abraham Benveniste, surnamed Senior'. I
think this identification is incorrect (it equates Don Abraham with
Abraham Benveniste, Court Rabbi under Juan II) but Abraham Senior may
well have been a member of the Benveniste family in any event (Abraham
Benveniste the Court Rabbi had son Abraham, called Abraham Benveniste
the Elder, and a grandson Abraham).

I would like to congratulate Tony Hausner and the Skala Research
Group for this outstanding achievement. This translation of the
Yizkor Book will serve as a valuable resource to all researchers with
roots in Skala, now and in the future.

Skala is included in the Suchostaw Region Research Group (SRRG) and
Skala researchers benefit >from the research and information relevant
to the whole area covered by SRRG. However, they are brilliantly
served by the dedication and commitment of Tony Hausner, the Skala
Group Shtetl Leader.

May they go >from strength to strength.

Strategies For Viewing and Translating Microfiche #general

Bill Saslow <bigbear011@...>

I just ordered 6 rolls of Microfiche on the Town of Uman, Russia
Jewish Birth Records 1866-1919 and they are in Russian and Hebrew.
They should arrive at a Family History Center (Mormons) in Rhode
Island in 3-5 weeks. Speaking and reading no Russian, and little
Hebrew since my Bar Mitzvah, I'm trying to think about how to approach
viewing the images when they arrive. Any ideas out there?

Perhaps there is someone out there, living near Rhode Island, that has
ancestors >from Uman and reads Russian and Hebrew?

Thanks,
Bill Saslow

How to find a family, Zilbegliet #belarus

mimizeff@...

I have been told that my grandmother's sibling died at the hands of
the Nazi's. Here is what I know:

Family surname ZILBEGLIET (or some such spelling)

1. Her name was Rachel (Rocheh or Rochel) Forman ZILBEGLIET. Her
husband was Morris Isaac (Moishe) ZILBEGLIET. Children were Leo,
Harry, Sarah and Mary Lee ZILBEGLIET.
2. Rachel (Forman-Furmanovna) was born in Minsk, Russia, 1888,
daughter of Zalman b. Abt. 1855 Minsk and Mere-Libe (nee Eiken-Iken-
Aiken) b. 1851 Minsk
3. Where do I begin to find what happened to these people? Harry is
the only one who survived as he was in the Russian army, I am told,
came to America after the war, but under what name I do not know.

I have no one to ask anymore, just old photographs of this family >from
my grandmother's collection.

Please contact me privately if you can help me.
