Re: Przemysl, Galicia House Numbers
Eva Lawrence
In Bonn I had the same difficulty, but found that there were city address books published every year which explained the system in the issues for the period when the change took place, I was lucky in that the Bonn Stadtarchiv had published them online. You may have to contact Przemyst to find out whether such address books have been preserved.

APOTHEKER Family From Stanislawow
#galicia
Abuwasta Abuwasta
Dear Siggers,
I am researching for several years my wife's family APOTHEKER with a fair success. We knew that her ggrandfather Izak Szaul APOTHEKER was born in 1837 and lived in Nowy Sacz. He had some relatives in Krakow and Przemysl and in villages in the vicinity. However, during the second half of the 19th century there was only one APOTHEKER household in those places, in other words, their forefathers came from somewhere else. Yesterday I found out that Izak Szaul was born in Stanislawow in East Galicia. In Stanislawow I found the spelling APTEKER which returned many results also in Kolomiyya and once also the right spelling APOTHEKER. I also have one APOTHEKER who lived in Bobrka (Bibrka) which is 86 km >from Stanislawow. Trying other spelling APTAJKER I found a PoT >from Lezajsk. I believe they might be my wife's relatives. If it rings a bell I would like to hear about it. East Galicia is Terra Nova for us. Thanks Jacob Rosen Jerusalem

Hi Dan,
I'm sure somehow all Lowenthals are related. My grandfather's sister married Jonasz Lowenthal, lived in Boryislaw and had 2 daughters together, Auda & Lotken. I haven't been able to find out any info about them since 1939. My Aunt was Feige Cirl Kreisberg Heimberg Lowenthal. Maybe you or someone else can put the pieces together. Hi! I would guess that the name is a Lithuanian nickname for someone called Aaron (like my GGF Orchick). See the Given Names Database, a Jewishgen infofile. Select foreign country Lithuania and type of search, DM. Does he have descendants called Chaim Aaron?
Good luck,

names don't exist in a vacuum - where (and when) is the record from?
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
you could check the jewishgen given names database. and in case there's any question of transcription, you might also post it (as original as possible) on viewmate. it sounds like "erzsike", which is a diminutive of erzsébet, if you're mistaking a more elaborate "e" for an "o" with an umlaut. ....... tom klein, toronto

Hopefully this will help someone:
Ida Stern's father was a grain speculator, lost a lot of money and committed suicide. I don't have a lot of info on her. She married Joachim Schonmann, the Grandson of Rabbi Yehuda Assad, so I assume that she was from the area which is Slovakia now.

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page
Bruce Drake
“My Shtetle Vizna,” from the Yizkor book of Slutsk in Belarus presents a vivid and wonderful slice of daily life during a week in the town — from the bustling of the market place to the celebration of the Sabbath. (Vizna is west of Slutsk, near Bialystock.” It begins with the author’s mother driving the family’s cow along with a stick, the Jews dashing to synagogue, a woman hawking her pierogis, and the meticulous preparations and observation of the Sabbath, described in great detail. After services, the author remembers, as a boy, strolling “past the ritual bath, to the woods. We talk, swing on the trees and I hear words in the swaying of the branches. I touch a leaf and feel a pulse in my body. I lie down in the grass. My gaze wanders toward the tops of the tall trees. On the way home, fields with stalks of corn spread before us, swaying, bowing, falling to their knees; they are speaking to us.” Bruce Drake Silver Spring MD Researching: DRACH, EBERT, KIMMEL, ZLOTNICK Towns: Wojnilow, Kovel
