New JewishGen Class - Writing Short Reports May 10-May 31 #ukraine

Nancy Holden

JewishGen will again offer a class in publishing your research. This
class concentrates on writing short reports.

Time to get your data out of the shoebox and arrange it in a summary
report? A quick, short report is great to send to relatives or other
researchers and to remind you just where your last project left off.

In this class we will practice writing 3 styles of reports:
* a list style,
* a lineage style report
* a longer Genealogical Summary Report.

The instructor will offer directions for using your genealogical
software "publishing features," organizing your files and folders,
citing your sources and making decisions about media snips and images.

Requirements: Students must have done enough research to be ready to
write. Students should have access to a genealogical software program
and be comfortable with computers.

Students must have 8-10 hours per week to study the assignments, write
their reports and interact with the instructor. To meet the needs of
international students this course is open 24/7.

Tuition is $150 for this 3 week class and includes editing suggestions
upon request. Enrollment is limited to 10 students.

Address questions to:
Nancy Holden
JewishGen-Education@...

If you have questions, I will be glad to review your project before you
enroll.

New York State appeals Reclaim The Records' legal win, tries to block release of post-1965 state marriage index #general

Asparagirl

Hello again >from Reclaim The Records. We have an update on the
post-1965 New York State marriage index, which our organization won in
a recent Freedom of Information lawsuit (Hepps vs. NYS DOH) in the
Supreme Court of New York...

We found out today that New York is appealing the case. Today was the
last possible day they could have filed an appeal, and they did.

So we're now fighting for the records again *and* we're cross-appealing
for our attorneys fees!

More details about the case are on our Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/ReclaimTheRecords/posts/1192091660941977

So for all of us who were hoping to be using the New York State
marriage index to search through more recent decades...well, it looks
like we'll have to wait a little longer. This could take a while to
resolve.

But we'll keep working at it. We want those records, and we want them
online for free public use! You know, like how almost all of the other
states do it. ;-)

Note that the New York City (not State) marriage index is already
online up through 2017 here:
https://www.NYCMarriageIndex.com/

...because Reclaim The Records won three earlier lawsuits against New
York City to get that data and put it online. And we look forward to
defending this fourth lawsuit win, too.

SINGER - GOLDMAN, Egypt-Israel #general

דוד נ.א.

hi
I am looking for information about a family, I have very little
information to them, and I can not find a clue. I'll be happy if
someone knows, or you have ideas.

They emigrated >from Europe, do not know exactly where, to Egypt, do
not know when, and after the establishment of the State of Israel they
immigrated >from Egypt to the Land of Israel.

This is the couple David Isidore Singer, who is married to Dora
Shifra (nee Goldman). David was born in Cairo and Dora was born in
Alexandria, both about 1914. Immigrated to Israel in 1950.

David's parents: Yaakov Leib (Leon) and Miriam Amalia. Dora's
parents: Henry Aaron Goldman (also in Turkey sometime) and Hannah Anna
(perhaps born in Romania?). Apparently died in Egypt, I do not know
anything else.

That's it, that's all the details I know. I have no other information
about Uncle or Dora's parents, where are they from? Where were they
born? Who were their parents and brothers?

Where can I find information about Egypt or immigration to it?

In general databases like anccetry and myheritage I could not find
anything, but maybe I was not looking good.

Thank you

Defratis or Defrates #general

M Thatcher

Hello, I am trying to trace my Jewish family named Defratis or Defrates,
roots >from Portugal, they left in about 1650 and settled in Rochester.,
Kent, England.
Can anyone assist me with information about them please?
There were several family groups all of which the men seemed to be mariners.
They went to work in the dock yards becoming ships masters.

De Freitas is a well-established Portuguese name that has been in existence
since at least the 12th century according to records.

Thank You

M Thatcher
