Abauj-Torna 1848 census is at the State Archives in Kosice, Slovakia. I think Peter Absolon took pictures of the actual pages. I also have some of them that I took myself many years ago, but Bodollo is not among them. However, I visited Bodollo this summer and have seen the cemetery as well. Dear JewishGen Community,
With tremendous pain and sadness, I regret to inform you that Phyllis Kramer, our beloved Director of Education, has passed away. Not many were aware of this, but Phyllis was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive illness shortly before the Cleveland conference. Phyllis shared the news with me, but asked that I not publicize it. Over the past 6 weeks, Phyllis did a lot of work, together with Nancy Holden, to perpetuate our educational offerings, and more information will be shared in the coming days. But for now, we join together in great sadness and mourning for someone who dedicated so much of herself to the broader Jewish genealogical community. I last spoke to Phyllis a few days ago, and last saw her in person a couple of weeks ago. She was an extremely loyal friend, mentor and role model to me personally, and I know that she will be deeply, deeply missed by all of us. More information will be shared, including what we can do to honor Phyllis's memory, in the days ahead. With tears. Avraham Groll Executive Director JewishGen.org

The September 2019 Issue of the Galitzianer
#poland
Gesher Galicia SIG
Gesher Galicia is delighted to announce the release of the September
2019 issue of our quarterly research journal, the "Galitzianer." This issue portrays Galicia >from different perspectives - historical, political, architectural, and geographical - and takes readers on a journey >from the birth of Austrian Galicia to today. In the September issue, we experience Emperor Joseph II's early encounters with the Jews of Galicia, and we witness the evolution of Jewish participation in local politics. We read about an assistant rabbi >from Dolina whose loyalty to the state helped him to maintain his job. We meet a Jewish architect with an artistic legacy that lives on in Lviv and a family legacy that lives on in the US Congress. We are introduced to two brothers >from Dynow, whose lives diverged dramatically during World War II. Finally, we get to know Steven Turner and learn how a question about his surname took him on a quest that ultimately led to his new position as president of Gesher Galicia. Here are the articles in the September issue: - "Interview with Steven S. Turner" - "Research Corner: Discoveries in the Archives" by Tony Kahane - "Becoming Habsburg Galitzianers" by Andrew Zalewski - "Jewish Political Rights: Evolution in Participation" by Borries Kuzmany - "The Life of Jozef Awin" by Sergey R. Kravtsov - "New Finds: Old Regional Maps" by Jay Osborn - Two Brothers: Parallel Lives and Divergent Paths by Nina Talbot The "Galitzianer" is a membership benefit of Gesher Galicia; for membership information, visit our website at www.geshergalicia.org/membership/. We at Gesher Galicia are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic
loss of our good friend, Phyllis Kramer z'l. Phyllis was member #417 of Gesher Galicia. She was a 100% Galitzianer. Anyone who came in contact with her was inspired by her devotion to Jewish genealogy to not only research but to help others. Her lectures were always popular. One left her presentations with excitement to go and try her suggestions on the topic at hand. Education was truly her passion and we at Gesher Galicia and everybody in the Jewish genealogy world is going to miss her. We send our heartfelt condolences to the Kramer, Gumbrecht and Katz families, Jewish Gen where she was the Vice President of Education and the JGS of Palm Beach where she served in an executive position. IAJGS conferences will not be the same without her. Baruch Dayan ha'Emet. -- Dr. Steven Turner President Gesher Galicia

AIZIC family from Nicoresti

Yael Cotlick <yael.cotlick@...>
Hello,
My grandfather, Josif AIZIC, was born in Nicoresti, in 1923. I am looking for any information regarding: 1) The origins of the surname AIZIC. Could it be a Sephardic Jewish surname? 2) the Jewish community in Nicoresti - I wasn't able to find anything online. >from the Romanian census of 1930 I found out that there were 52 Jews living in Nicoresti in 1930, out of which only 38 spoke Yiddish, which I found odd. Is it possible that there were Sephardic Jews in the community? 3) Anyone with the same surname originally >from Nicoresti. I have no knowledge of any uncles/aunties or cousins my grandfather had. 4) How do I go about obtaining death records >from Nicoresti? I know that my grandfather's father, Haim, passed away whilst the family lived there. Many thanks, Yael Corlick

Hello GerSig,
I've posted some documents for which I would like translation and/or transcription. Both documents are >from the Institut f=C3=BCr Stadtgeschichte in Frankfurt. This will probably take someone who not only speaks German, but is skilled in reading 19th-century handwriting! The first few pages are >from the file "Bergen-Enkheim No. 2505." The archivist shared it with me when I inquired about my ancestor Raphael Hess II, but I have no idea what the document's original purpose is. Of course a full translation would be nice, but any clues or even a gist of the contents would be helpful: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75065 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75066 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75067 The second set of pages are >from the file "Bergen-Enkheim No. 2388." The name of the file is Revision und Best=C3=A4tigung des Inventars =C3=BCb= er den Nachlass der Sarchen He=C3=9F wegen der Wiederverehelichung ihres Ehemannes Raphael He=C3=9F II, Laufzeit: 1860 =E2=80=93 1861 [Revision and confirmation of the inventory of the estate of Sarchen Hess because of the remarriage of her husband Raphael Hess II, duration: 1860 - 1861] http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75068 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75069 Raphael Hess II and Sarchen (Neuhof) Hess were my 4th great-grandparents. There are many pages in this document but I have chosen to ask for help with these because it appears to list their children and mention other individuals with the surname Neuhof. Many thanks! Hello list,
in Bad Durkheim / Duerkheim and Grethen records of 1798 - 1810 (French period) I came across a first name which I saw no were before: Schaldi, Schaltin or Schalting. Obviously the spelling is not consistent. The persons with this name have additional names, but in each case another combination, and also father's names differ in each case (Samuel, Isaac, Hirsch, Kiwe, Loeb, Wolf) Has anyone any thoughts on this?
