Spanish "Angel of Budapest" Sanz-Briz Saved 5,000 Jews #hungary

Jan Meisels Allen

A Spanish diplomat in Budapest during World War ll was responsible in =
1944
for saving 5,000 Hungarian Jews >from certain death. He is known as the
"Angel of Budapest", Angel Sanz-Briz. =20

SS Adolf Eichman moved to Budapest in 1944 after the Nazi invasion of
Hungary in March 1944 with the plan to eliminate Hungary's one million =
Jews.
Within weeks over 400,000 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz.
San-Briz was serving as Spain's commercial attach=E9 before he was left =
in
charge of the mission in mid-1944. He was ordered out of Budapest in
November 1944.

How he Hide the Jews

San-Briz falsified consular documents to grant nationality of a =
long-expired
1924 Spanish law aimed at Sephardic Jews, even though Hungary's Jewish
population was overwhelmingly Ashkenazi. The Jews were hidden in the
Spanish embassy, brides paid to locals. San-Briz was able to get the
Hungarian government to authorize Spanish protection pf 200 Sephardic =
Jews.
He turned that to 200 Sephardic families an those 200 families were
indefinitely multiplied by not expediting any safe conduct with a number
higher than 200. What he did was add letters to each number using the =
entire
alphabet.

He recorded 232 provisional passports issued to 32 people and 1,898
protective letters and 15 passports for 45 Sephardic Jews. San-Briz =
rented
11 apartment buildings to house the 5,000 people he placed under Spain's
protection. The rooms were overcrowded, people hungry and cold, and
diseased. But they survived.

Spain and the Holocaust

As the reports of escalating Holocaust at Auschwitz became known, San =
=96Briz
started to inform the Franco government in Spain. But no instructions =
were
forthcoming for many months. According to San-Briz's son, " Franco =
needed
arguments to improve relations with Israel, and he asked my father to =
say
that he had acted in the head of state's name. He agreed, but it was
completely untrue". When the Jews of France were being deported by the
Nazis, Franco did permit many to flee through Spain=97but that changed =
in
1940. He then prevented transit papers and those caught in Spain =
illegally
were sent to a concentration camp in Miranda de Ebro. Spanish-speaking
Sephardic Jews were also not given the option of refuge in Spain. By =
October
1944 the then foreign minister sent a telegram to Sanz-Briz in Budapest, =
"
on the request of the World Jewish Congress please extend protection to =
the
largest number of persecuted Jews'. Franco recognized Hitler was losing =
the
war.

Spain Never Recognized San-Briz for his Bravery

When he was ordered back to Spain in November 1944 he continued in a =
regular
diplomatic career. His obituary in June 1980 never mentioned his brave
efforts. Franco never permitted him to receive the honor of the =
Righteous
Among the Nations by Yad Vashem as Franco was anti-Israel. In 1966 he
joined the ranks of the righteous. See:

ViewMate translation request - German #hungary

Dear Group,

I've posted a document in German for which I need a translation. It is on
ViewMate at the following address:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/faq.asp#announce

This is a document relating to a Synagogue seat in Hranice relating to the
Wolf family (which later emigrated to Hungary). On the right hand side page
there are several names. I am particularly interested to know what is the
relationship between them. Is Sigmund related to Jakob Israel (My G5F)? how?
Are there any detailed about the people mentioned? also if possible who are
the Wolfs mentioned on the left hand page and is there any relationship
between them.

Please respond via the form provided on the ViewMate image page.
Thank you very much.

Dear David,

On page 186 of the Rohatyn Yizkor Book there is a picture of Raphael
Soferman.

You can access the online version of the book at the NY Public Library

As founder and project lead, I invite you to explore the RJH website

Please also join the descendants group where you can access free if

Search for the Katzovitch family #bessarabia

Camille Lefebvre <camillelefebvre@...>

Hello,

I am a French historian searching for the family of my great
grand-mother Olga Katzovitch.

My family lived in Kichinev around 1897 and 1905, they were from
Odessa moving to Kichiniev around 1897 and they left Kichiniev for
France, via Istambul around 1905.

I found a lot of information on the internet. But I have several
question I have not managed to answer and I am wondering if someone
could help me.

The father Srol-Itsko/Isaac/Isra Katzovitch born in Odessa 1860, son
of Salomon/Lazare Katzovitch and Zelda Katzovtich, born Boumbrach
deceased in Kichiniev on the 13/04/1903

The mother Ruha/Rachel/Rose-Michele Katzovitch, born Mizrachi/Mizraki,
daughter of Nahum/Guzmal Avram Mizrachi and Sophie Mizrachi born
Birend

The kids:

Avraam/Elie/Eliezer Katzovitch born in Odessa in 1887

Moyshe/Moïse/Maurice Katzovitch born in Odessa in 1889

Golda/Olga Katzovitch born in Odessa on the 26/12/1891

Dvoyra/Dora/Deborah/Debra Katzovitch born in Odessa on the 27/04/1894

Khana/Anna Katzovitch born in Odessa on the 05/07/1896

Zelman/Zioma/Pierre Katzovitch born Kichinev on the 23/05/1904

I am searching 4 information:

- First my great grand-mother Golda/Olga Katzovitch is said in my
family to have entered the Gymansium of Kichiniev around 1902-1904.

Is it possible to verify this information and to have the proof that
she was at the Gymnasium? I read that there was at this time only one
gymnasium in Kichiniev it it right? If she was there is it possible to
access to her record?

- My grand-father was said to be a merchant but I do not any other
information. Is father was selling fruits. Is it possible to find
information about that?

- Is it possible to find information about their departure from
Kichiniev in 1905 ?

- Zelda Katzovtich, born Boumbrach died just around the big pogrom of
Kichiniev on the 13/04/1903 is it possible to know if she was victim
of the pogrom?

Best,

Camille
