(Greece) 75th Anniversary of Jewish Deportation from Island of Rhodes
Jan Meisels Allen
The Island of Rhodes in the South Aegean, has an area known as “la Juderia” the Jewish Quarter. It was in the Old Town for 2,300 years until July 23,1944. Jews of Rhodes were noted back in the Maccabean times in the second century B.C.E. This year was the 75th anniversary of the deportation to Auschwitz. The original Jews were the Romaniotes who were assimilated into the Sephardic Jewish customs and language. Moment Magazine has an article on this. Included in the article is a photograph of a plaque next to the synagogue Kahal Shalom with the list of names of those who were deported—such as Ventoiura, Nahamias, Beneviste and many others.

2019 JewishGen conference in Cleveland (3)
#general
Yefim Kogan
Hi everybody,
this is my third message about the conference. You probably know by now that for me Cemetery projects are most important among any other projects we are doing. The reason is simple, the cemeteries are disappearing... Because of that I went to a number of events related to cemetery reconstructions, grave indexing and a like. ==West Side Cemeteries Tour (Monday). I do not have anyone in my family buried in Cleveland, but I was interested to talk to cemetery caretakers - Jewish Federation of Cleveland, and see how the graves are maintained and fixed if needed. We visited cemeteries >from the very old to a modern, some located in what used to be Jewish neighborhood and others are located in non-Jewish area, where Jews never lived. I was really surprise to hear that in such cases the non-Jewish communities are taken care of the graves! I hope that in Bessarabia/Moldova similar can be done. I also like to drive many miles throughout town into many different places, which I would never see myself. ==Jewish Cemetery Restoration in Eastern Europe, meeting/dinner (Tuesday). I decided to join this group to learn methods of reconstruction Jewish cemeteries and graves. Most of attendants were interested in Poland and followed "Projects of The Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland". I asked people several questions: 1) if we know that a cemetery existed in a place, and was completely destroyed, and now there are houses built on that location or it is now a potato fields, What to do with such places? 2) If a writing on a grave is almost destroyed, how best to clean it, being able to read it. I received many interesting replies and hopefully some of them we could use. If you have any ideas, please let us know too. I would be glad to hear you. After the conference Jeff Miller who was an organizer of that event, created a Facebook group called "Friends of Jewish Cemetery Restoration in Eastern Europe". ==How to Improve Data for JOWBR (JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry) (Thursday), presented by Madeleine Isenberg. It was interesting to hear how other people are working at the cemeteries projects. Please let me know if you have any questions, ideas. It would be great to hear >from you. All the best, Yefim Kogan JewishGen Bessarabia SIG Leader and Coordinator

Searching for ZAVELL Descendants
#general
MZaveloff
I am searching for family of Solomon Zavell, born c. 1873 in Grodno
Gubernia. I believe that in the 1920's, the name was changed >from ZAVELOFF to ZAVELL. According to newspaper articles, he was A violinist for the NYC Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in the early 1900's as well as being a philanthropist. He had had three sons, Arnold, Lawrence and Jessie. I am searching for them as I believe that they may be related. If you have an contact information, please respond privately to the email address below. Thanks, Marvin Zaveloff Bordentown, NJ mdz45@verizon.net

researching maternal grandparents Simon and Fannie Ellman from Odessa
#general
Steve Nissenson
Hi all, I am new to this site, but have been working on this tree for
3 years and still come up with a dead end at this point. They were first cousins, and married in Odessa and came here in 1905 and settled in Chicago. Her maiden name was Masonzjnic. I sadly have no older generations to ask about this, and cannot seem to find any more information. Does anyone have an idea to research further? I am very curious to get to the point that I see that they were first cousins. I did not have this trouble on my father's side....he was born in Petrokov, Poland in 1911 and I was able to go back further in time. Thank you, Steve Nissenson, Pacifica, CA

DINNERSTEIN
#general
Sheldon Dan <sheldan1955@...>
I am trying to connect two branches of the DINNERSTEIN family. My
wife's grandmother's sister, Anna DINNERSTEIN, married Solomon GROSS. Her daughter Sarah GROSS married Morris BERGER, and one of their sons was Joseph BERGER. On the other branch, Avrum Yaakov DINNERSTEIN married Pesha Bella SHEPSENWOHL. Their son Maurice Jonah DINNERSTEIN married Emma COHEN, and their daughter was Shirley DINNERSTEIN. Shirley became the wife of Joseph BERGER. I was told that Shirley and Joseph were third cousins. If I understand this correctly, Avrum Yaakov and Anna (and therefore my wife's grandmother Gussie GLICKMAN) would be first cousins and their fathers, Henoch Dovid DINNERSTEIN and Chaim (Herman) DINNERSTEIN, would be brothers. I would like to be able to prove this. If anyone has information regarding this family, please let me know. Sheldon Dan sheldan1955@bellsouth.net
