Hi All -
First of all I just returned >from my citizenship interview in Budapest, so if anyone wants to know more about that I'm happy to share. My neighbor knows little about his father's origins so I'm helping him where I can. Their family considers themselves Hungarian. I'm not finding any reference to this place name BERCHSAS TECHEC anywhere, which seems odd. I've copied the text below >from the original birth record and have tried to check Hungarian, Czech and Slovak sources. The only reference I found is in a book about Hungary in Italian >from 1687! If anyone has any ideas, leads, suggestions I (and my forlorn neighbor) would be grateful as I am stumped. Following up on Ron Wasserstrom inquiry about the Hungarian town "Modezarhely" and Tom Klein's answer, along with Vivian Kahn's comments: This is a very strange, seemingly impossible situation: I found two ship lists for this Weisz family, one for the Pennsylvania sailing >from Hamburg 7 Nov 1913 and arriving in New York on 21 Nov. The other for the Amerika sailing >from Cuxhaven 6 Nov 1913 and arriving in New York on 15 Nov. But both lists have the same family, same names, same ages, coming >from the same person and going to the same person and address. The list on the Amerika gives better place names: I think it is Udvasarhely and 5 other birth places. Does anyone have any idea how the same family could be on two different ship lists at the same time? Hamburg is inland and Cuxhaven is a seaport. I could see taking one ship >from Hamburg to Cuxhaven then another to New York. But the Hamburg date is after the Cuxhaven date, so that idea does not seem to work. What are your thoughts? our open-access database: https://search.geshergalicia.org/ This communication refers to the Jewish Medical Students Project, which brings records and biographical information on Galician students who attended several universities in Austria-Hungary and in the successor states (post 1918). New records added to the AGD include the following: -- Lwow University (1919-1939) >from the State Archive of Lviv Oblast (DALO, Fond 26/section 15; Ukraine) -- Prague University: German and Czech universities (1882-1939) from the Charles University Archive (the Czech Republic). The JRI-Poland Next Generation (Next Gen) Project was introduced
at this year's IAJGS conference and is designed specifically to streamline your research and simplify the efforts of our leadership to manage the growing database and resources we have developed over the years. On behalf of Stanley Diamond, executive director, and the board of JRI-Poland, I'm delighted to update you on this exciting endeavor to build a new website backed by an Advanced Data Management System for volunteers to work seamlessly together.
