Searching for my Grandmother Selma ZWIENITSKI's grave #germany

Selma Sheridan

Dear researchers,

Online I have been unable to find the location of my Grandmother's grave, or
at least what happened to her body...

Selma ZWIENITSKI / SWINIZKI nee STIEFEL, born 8 June 1882 in Hamburg,
murdered 10 Nov. 1938 (Kristallnacht) in her home in Bremen.

There is a monument in Bremen for its World War II Jewish victims, with
their names on the base. But where is her grave?

Ship name for passenger list

Jennifer Meltzer

My maternal grandmother, Jennie (Beck) PEARLMAN came to the USA in the 1890's.  In 1925 she traveled on her own to visit the "Alte Heim" - the old country.  In her case, this was Vilna, Lithuania (then part of the USSR) and Warsaw, Poland.  There is a photo of her on the ship, but the name is partly hidden.  What's visible is _ _TZOW BREMAN.  A key to finding the correct ship is that she was not an immigrant at this point, but an American passenger.

Does anyone know how I can figure out the full name of the ship and then find the manifest/passenger list?

As we know obituaries are an excellent source of genealogy information.  I am looking for recommendations of how to keep track of whose obituary you have.   So as not to repeat the same person again.    Thank you,    Trudy Barch, Florida

A Galician World Right in the Heart of Brooklyn #galicia

A bit of Galicia in modern day Brooklyn. Hol Hamoed Sukkot in the
Shendishover Shul. This Rabbinical dynasty >from the shtetl that is today
called Sedziszow Malopolski in Poland is still going strong and I was
honored to be invited to their celebration tonight. The davening here
was authentic Galician. I found it so strange yet wonderful to see young
Yeshiva boys praying in this beautiful sounding Galician Hebrew. Listen
to the passion in their davening in the video linked to here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/32hxd43re9tmgsq/Hallel.mp4?dl=0

I was very excited to be an honoured guest tonight at the Shendishover
Shul in Brooklyn. Israel Horowitz and his father the Shendishover Rebbe
were so hospitable to me. I so much enjoyed their services. Their
passion in davening especially during Hallel was a joy and an experience
to behold. Afterwards they invited me into their beautiful Succah and
gifted me a jar of honey for a sweet New Year. Picture linked to here
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6a4qcvlde4blqbb/ReceivingHoney.jpg?dl=0

The experience felt like taking a time warp back to Galicia while being
in the middle of Brooklyn. I so enjoyed their Galitzianer accented
Hebrew. It brought back memories of being in my grandparents' shul as
a young boy in East New York.

Wishing everybody a Shabbat Shalom and a Moadim L'Simcha.

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #yizkorbooks

Bruce Drake

You’re living in a small shtetl in Belarus, or anywhere else in the
Pale, and you get sick. Or have a toothache. Or get something in your
eye. You need a doctor. A dentist. A pharmacy to duck into and get
some eye wash.

But in many towns, there was no doctor, or dentist or pharmacy. The
“doctor” in town had never studied medicine and, in “Folk Medicine”
from the Yizkor book of Horodetz (Gorodets) Belarus, the author’s
father became a widely-known healer pretty much by accident. The
“dentist” was Asher Dovid, the town’s ritual slaughterer, whose
technique was to talk away the toothache. (You could also put garlic
on the hurting tooth or “or wear the left shoe on the right foot
against Jewish customs). If there was no pharmacy to get some eye wash
for the bit of sand in your eye, there was always Yitzhak Aharon who
“was an expert in licking an eye.” There were also midwives, exorcists
and specialists in casting spells to deal with different ailments.

And so, “This is how Jews lived, became sick, recovered and died in Horodets.”

Subject: Are my first cousins in Australia?

I'm trying to find my 2 first cousins whom I have not ever met. I think
they could be in Australia. I've found their births but I cannot find them
on the genealogical websites.

They are:

Anthony B F Fulton 1948 q4

Lesley M W Fulton 1951 q1 she might be married and have a different
surname.

Any lead or advice on tracking them down would be fantastic.

Fw: Dual citizenship with Austria #austria-czech

From: Yvonne Ward

Subject: Dual citizenship with Austria

I put in my application at the Austrian Embassy in London last week. My
understanding is that I was able to apply because my father was Austrian
when I was born.

I decided it was my moral duty because of the immense suffering of my
grandparents and the impact upon the life that my father lived and upon my
life. Nothing to do with Brexit.

I presented the following documents:

My father's Heimatschein
his birth certificate
copy of his Manchester Aliens Register - leave to land granted at Croydon,
as a trans-migrant, admitted on a temporary basis and expected to
re-emigrate at the end of his training
attestation certificate when he joined the British Army
Army documents showing his change of surname
Army paybook,
military history
4 pages >from the first and last of his passports in my possession
his British naturalisation papers

grandparents birth certificates
signed documents of forced transfer (i.e. theft) of their assets, at Asset
Transfer Office, New Finance Vienna, 7 Seidengasse 20, on 14 Dec 1938
lots of apostilled British birth, marriage and death certificates - £30
each apostille from: https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised
Statements detailing all about me and statement detailing everything about
my father
My passport and my husband's passport.

It took me over two years to amass all these. I was informed at the Embassy
that it may take three years to come to a decision.

It cost about £400 in all. Anyone interested could start to collect
documents now for next September.

Primary sources of documentary evidence:

The National Archives, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 4DU.
Oesterreichisches Staatsarchiv, 1030 Wien, Nottensdorfer Gasse 2.
Archive of the Jewish Community of Vienna, Desider-Friedmann-Platz 1, A-1010

General Register Office, PO Box 2, Southport, PR8 2JD

Please use viemmate for translation requests -- from one who frequently translates

When you want a translation, please upload the image to the Viewmate Image Gallery not as an attachment to the discussion groups. Viewmate has clear instructions for uploading the images.
When I translate on https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/topost.aspiemate, - and I do that often, albeit in bursts - I find other's people's attempts at translating  the same text - whether they do it before me, or after I submit my suggestion - very helpful.  This collaboration makes the end product much better. And I learn from reading other people's translations.

Furthermore, Viewmate helps me (as a translator) handle with the images without necessarily downloading them to my computer - it lets me rotate images that have writing on the side or bottom margins, or images that have been submitted upside down.
