I have just returned >from a memorable 5 day visit to my g-father's town of
Gorodok near Vitebsk, Belarus. In Vitebsk itself I met Arkady Shulman who
has been documenting everything about the shtetls. The website for this is

NYC 1927 Rabbi with connections to Chicago FISHER-MELTZER family #rabbinic

Alice Solovy <alromaso@...>

Does anyone know if in 1927 there was a famous NYC Rabbi with either
the surname FISHER or related to Fishers and MELTZERs in Chicago?
His age was probably somewhere between 50 and 80. I know this is
vague, but if by chance anyone has the answer, it would be great.
Sincerely, Alice Solovy

Rav Hanoch GEWIRTZ of Debica #rabbinic

Howard Reich <reichfamily@...>

I don't recall the name GEWIRTZ being mentioned on ravsig and I searched the
jewishgen discussion group archives without success.

Does anyone have any genealogical information on the descendants of Rav
Hanoch Gewirtz (sometimes pronounced Geveirtz), of Debica (in Yiddish
pronounced Dembitz), Galicia?

Any information would be most appreciated.

PRUSKIN: Reb Pesach of Kobrin, Antipole, Paris (also ZUCHOVSKI, LIPSCHUTZ) #rabbinic

mandjmeyers@...

I searching for family of Reb Pesach PRUSKIN, also known as Pesach
Kobrinner.

A cousin tells me that his great-grandmother Ida/Chaya Laya, sister of
my great-grandmother Rachel (nee Prushkin) Meyers, often spoke of being
related to Reb Pesach. Rachel and Chaya Laya's parents were Eliayahu
and Rose (nee FARS) PRUSHKIN. Chaya Laya's family (SHALMUK, changed to
PALMER) immigrated >from near Amdur/Indura and Rachel's family
(MEYEROWITZ/MEYERS) emigrated >from nearby Berestovitsa. Both Rachel
and Ida were born in the 1850s. There was a 3rd sister whose name may
have been Ailkie.

The following link is to a short biography, originally published by
Chaim Shapiro in the Jewish Observer

http://www.tzemachdovid.org/gedolim/jo/tworld/rpruskin.html

gives a number of intriguing clues to Reb Pesach's family tree, including:
1. born c1859 to an impoverished mother (name unknown) in an unnamed
town, father's name also Pinchas
2. mother's grandfather was Reb Pinchas Michael, rav of Antipole.
3. Pesach had 2 sisters and 2 brothers (names unknown), all of whom
went to Paris to live with a son (name unknown) of Reb Pinchas Michael
4. son of Reb Pinchas Michael is said to have been involved in translation
of Talmud into French and was a professor of philosophy in Paris
5. one of the Parisian sisters married a wealthy maskil and lived in
Vilna (names unknown)
6. Pinchas married a Tziporah Lipschutz
7. Pinchas died 1939 in Kobrin
8. a son Rav Avraham Pruskin is said to have escaped to the US with
some of his father's writings which were published by a grandson "Rabbi
Nosson Zuchovski of Bnei Brak and Pesach Tikvah"
9. a son Reb Leib married the "daughter of the Mashgiach of Lomza
Yeshiva, Reb Moshe Rosenstein"
10. of the brothers in France, "their children and grandchildren are
celebrated French atomic scientists"
11. "the grandchildren of Reb Pesach can be found in many a major
kollel and yeshivah in America and Israel"

So, I have lots of clues that hopefully will find connect back in
the1850s with my great-great-grandfather Eliyahu PRUSKIN.

If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me privately at

Tassos ARONIS from Egaleo of Athens Greece is looking his ancestors. #sephardic

Aronis Tasos <taronis@...>

I am writing to you because I've found out through Family Tree DNA Co., by
testing 12, 25 & 37 markers that my DNA matches exactly at least with that
of one fellow who has Shephardic ancestors.
My grandfather Nikolaos was expelled as a refugee >from Smyrna, Turkey in
1922, during the second Balkan War, and the ARONIS family settled in Athens.
My father Nikitas ARONIS, now 82, was orphaned during WW2. Based on all this
information, how can I determine my father's origins?

Thank you cordially for your kind help to guide me find it out.

TOLEDANO/DANIELS #sephardic

Catherine Maggs <cem@...>

Hello,
I have recently discovered, that the *Daniels* surname, was once/
'/*Toledano';* would anyone know if this applied to all UK* Daniels*
c.1665 onwards.

The names '*Treinla'* & *'Dinah' *[ bat *Daniels*] were also associated
with my Great Grandmother x 4 [ Gravestone] ; would anyone be able to
enlighten me further , in any respect, regarding any of these names. I
have searched for some explanation of '*Treinla',* but it seems that it
is not used today . *'Dinah',* it seems, could have been her family
name. This lady died 1n 1813.
This is my first post to this Forum & I hope that you will all forgive
me if the format is not perfect.
Thank you & best wishes

Having just been told that my great-aunt and uncle are buried in the
above cemetery - Etta and Aaron Hoffman in Plot C8 (she in 1917 and he
before 1911) - I was wondering whether anyone will be going to this
cemetery in the fairly near future and who would be happy to take a
photo of their gravestone/s for me. I look forward to hearing >from
someone who is willing to do this.
