Re: Can Udel be a Female Given Name?# names # hungary

Molly Staub

Hi Trudy, This is a longshot, but my maternal side was from Ukraine. My ggf Yishea (Yehoshua) Berenson was married to a woman the family knew as Riva the Midwife. After marrying him, she lived in Krasnoye, Podolia Gubernia, Ukraine.. I know she delivered the Loigman children in Krasnoye between 1892 and 1901.The family said she was quite successful and even lectured at a school for midwifery. Her grown children pictured in a 1904-photo I have are all wearing substantial jewelry..I have been searching for her maiden name for three decades! Might this be the Riva/Rivka for whom your relatives were named? Cousin? Molly

Help with Lithuania shtetl name #lithuania

Hugh Harvey

I obtained my grandfather’s birth certificate from the Lithuanian state archives and it shows his birthplace as Vidugora. I’ve never been able to find anything about this place - all I know is that it is probably near Pasvalys and/or Ponevezh.
Can anyone provide any info?
Thanks

Re: Lincoln Brigade and Spanish Civil War #usa

Judith Berlowitz

This is an important topic, owing to the high number of Jews who volunteered in the International Brigades.  I don't know of a genealogical study of the Jewish Lincolns, though Sugarman's list can be useful, despite some small errors. I initiated a project on Geni.com which I hope will interest people.  Of course not all those profiled are Jewish.

One issue to consider is that since volunteers signed up through the Comintern, they went to Spain in defiance of US policy and on return many were victims of blacklisting and other types of persecution.  For this reason, some descendants may not be willing to have their relatives' names or noms de guerre publicized.

Shelly, here is your relative, listed among the volunteers on the ALBA website.

I believe that Yudel is a nickname for Yehuda. Udel is pronounced like
oodel which is usually a woman's name.

"Levite" or "the Levi" is a designation given only to MALES, not to women. (it is passed down from father to son and originated with Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob).

This is amazing. I found a family transfer on my very first try!! Thanks so much for this information as it gave me the name of the town where my grandfather grew up and also, for future research, a possible spelling of the family's last name.
