Ukraine SIG document acquisition update #ukraine

Janette Silverman

Dear friends,
Thanks to the efforts of Jeff Briskman and Michael Gerver, we have been
able to download almost 1500 files >from the website on which Alex
Krakovsky has been putting his pdf scans. The records are from:

Berdichev, Chigirin, Colony - Farm, Dubno, Kanev, Kiev, Kremenchug,
Mukachevo, Odessa, Odessa & Herson, Podolia, Priluki, Radomyshel,
Ruzhin, Skvira, Tarascha & Lipovets, Uman, Vinnitsa, Wolynia, Yampol,
Zhitomir Archive, Zvenigorodka & Cherkassy

We still need to catalog the individual files. We know that many of the
documents we already have, but it was easier to download everything and
then process. After we've added the names of the files to a spreadsheet
and compare with our catalog of files we already have, the names of
those newly acquired will be added to the projects list for the
appropriate towns. Town leaders will be alerted so that the documents
can be added to projects already underway or new projects can be
started. It's taken several months to get all these records and may
take several more before they are cataloged.

Please, don't ask me questions about this data. I can't answer anything
more than I've just done.

Encounters with aiti-semitism during family history travel in Europe,
especially Poland, are described in this current New York Times article.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/27/travel/poland-holocaust-trip.html

"I was traveling through Germany and Poland with the Fellowships at
Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics, a program that looks
at the role of journalists, lawyers, doctors, business people and
religious leaders in the Holocaust. Following several days of study in
Berlin and Krakow, we had spent the morning exploring Kazimierz before
a drive to Auschwitz and Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and death
camps. A few of us were grabbing lunch for the road when we noticed
the "Heil Hitler" signs for sale and, keeping with the themes of our
trip, began debating the ethical questions they raised."

Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>

Shalom,

I am continually touched and heartened by the number of people
dedicating their time to advance the Yizkor Book Project. As an
example, I recently received a number of messages >from people
interested in taking on the coordination of some of our
"coordinator-less" Yizkor Book projects, to help move them forward. If
you would like to know more about the coordination of a particular
Yizkor book, please feel free to contact me and I will explain what is
involved,

Last month saw several more projects being completed online and they were:

- "Memories >from Nowy-Dwor" relating to the community of Nowy Dwor

Mazowiecki, Poland which was ably coordinated by Debra Michlewitz.
- "We Want To Live" which is a book describing the arduous journey of
Jewish martyrs across Europe during World War Two. It was kindly
donated to us by the author's son - Joshua Rassen.

On a further welcome note, once again, the Yizkor Books in Print
Project have published another book: "Memorial Book of the Community
of Chorzel" on the community of Chorzele, Poland. The remarkable work
of the YBIP Project team continues ever onward, month by month.

I am also pleased to note that Meir Gover has generously allowed us
access to a 520 page Yizkor book he has prepared on the communities of
Dlugosiodlo and Poreba Koceby. We have added links in the listings of
these communities and, hence this book, in our Translations Index.

Bessarabia SIG #Bessarabia Yizkor Book Project, January 2019 #bessarabia
