Subotica research.

ericalishahn@...
As someone who has done a lot of research re Jews in Szabadka I would have to say it is not easy. Most records are not on line. There is at the Subotica Archives a file of rabbinical vital records dating back to the early 18th Century. I would love to see these records transcribed someday.
If I remember correctly there is a Spitzer family in the local Jewish cemetery, which is online. Beyond that there is an 1828 land census of heads of households in the Batschka. It has been fully transcribed by Martha Remer Connor; the transcription which is now on line through FamilySearch, title "Germans and Hungarians, 1828 Land Census, Bacs Bodrog, Hungary". JewishGen has posted some names >from the 1828 census when it believes the person counted was Jewish either because in some cases he was identified as Jewish or because he had what seemed likely to be a Jewish name. Radix which is a paid site has records of various sorts, including a list of employees in 1917 on the Hungarian railway which included my great grandfather and his brother in law. Radix also has an 1891 Industrial survey. JewishGen has posted by name List of Subotica Jews victims of the Fascist Occupation 1941-1945.

Re: Same person listed on two passenger manifests within ten days
#general
boris
The most plausible explanation is that two persons traveled under the same
name. Determining who was the "real one" and who was the "fake" is a different story. Since Alan Greenberg discovered that the first Mendel was admitted and the second one was detained (was a reason listed? Is it know what happened to him later?) the easiest assumption is that the first Mendel was the "real one". Given the fact that the Russo-Japanese was in full swing by the late 1904, the second Mendel could well be someone else, e.g. 22 y.o., trying to evade the draft and detained because he looked too young for his documents. The real wild guess is that the first Mendel - for whatever reason - stood vividly in memory of the immigration clerk who was surprised to see the same name only 10 days later. But these are all guesses. Researching both, the New York and the Worcester families *may* shed light. Boris Feldblyum Potomac, MD

I am not sure that this will ultimately help you but there is a German-Austrian book by Elisabeth Buxbaum, Transit Shanghai, Edition Steinbauer, Wien (Vienna) 2008. While I don't think that the book itself would be particularly helpful (except for maybe the bibliography listing her extensive sources), it might be worth a try to contact Ms. Buxbaum. Maybe she has an idea where you could look further. A very superficial Google search did not reveal any email address for her but the publisher's general email address is presse@edition-steinbauer.com. They might be able to forward an inquiry... Best regards, Irene Peters, Berlin, Germany iupfamilyresearch@gmail.com Ruth Kraut ruthkraut@gmail.com wrote:
