Date and Time: Sunday, February 24, 2019, 1:30 p.m.
Location: 3723 Old Court Rd (Dumbarton Offices entrance), Pikesville, MD

Pre-war school attendance in Chrzanow Lubelski #general

Dina Hill

My mom Szyfra Chamita was born in Chrzanow Lubelski in 1932. My mom
died of ovarian cancer in 1995 so I can't ask her any more questions,
and apparently, I didn't ask enough.

I am writing a book about my parents before, during and after the
Holocaust that they survived. This book is going to be self-published.
It's just for my family, my daughters, my granddaughter and cousins,
aunts, uncles. etc.

My dad told me that my mom didn't go to school before the Holocaust.
She was 8 when my grandfather and 3 uncles were killed. She lost most
of her family so quickly. The only one left was my grandmother, my
mom and one out of 4 uncles.

My question is why wouldn't my mom have gone to school?? Did they not
allow Jews to attend school in Chrzanow?

After she survived the Holocaust with my grandmother and uncle, my mom
went to school in Krasnik at 12 years old.

Best Regards,
Dina Aptekar Hil

Requesting research help in New Haven, Connecticut #general

philafrum

Genners,

I've hit a brick wall regarding the MANDELSTEIN/MENDELSTEIN family in New
Haven. I found a manifest for an Abraham Mandelstam who arrived in New York
City on September 7, 1882 aboard the SS Pennsylvania. Unfortunately manifests
that far back didn't indicate town of origin or last residence.

I'd like to find out if the New Haven Mandelsteins (Abraham, Jacob, Mandel,
Nathan) are related to mine >from Starokonstantinov, Ukraine. Since this
surname isn't that common, I'm theorizing that all the people with that name
who lived in that town are relatives of mine.

Is there a New Haven-based Genner who'd be willing to help me? Thanks.

JASSELMAN and VISSOTSKY in Paris #france

RLS <rlsavin@...>

Hello,
I am helping a friend with his family history, and while I'm really
good at Ashkenazi research here in the US, I am having problems with
France research. My friend's great grandfather was Mardoche JASELMAN
born in 1859 (in Pinsk I think) and he died in Paris in 1949.

Mardoche JASELMAN married a Sarah VISSOTSKY who was born in 1868 and
died in 1936. We know no details about her except that Ann Rabinowitz
suggested that she might be part of the large WISSOTSKY family from
Russia that fled to Paris during the Russian Revolution. I would love
to be able to figure that out since we know nothing. Mardoche and
Sarah had a son named Judel JASSELMAN born in 1896-1953. He married a
Pauline GLASS born in 1907-1979. We are really trying to learn where
they all came from, how they survived the war while living in Paris
and if there is other family out there. I don't know how to navigate
the French archives online, especially since I don't speak French.

Do they exist on Ancestry or any other site?

Regards and thank you for your thoughts.
