Re: List of Jewish residents in Germany between 1933 and 1945 #germany

Thank you Simon for alerting us to this important new source.

I assume >from its title and the number of names that the
database includes refugees and survivors. Perhaps it will also
memorialize some victims not listed in the second edition of Gedenkbuch.

Can anyone tell us the fields that are included in the new
database and the sources used to compile it? (Perhaps, among
others, the 1939 "minority census"?)

According to the German goverment press release (see Simon's
original message or tinyurl.com/residentslist) one of six
organizations that will receive copies of the list is "the
Yad Vashem Memorial Site." Can anyone confirm that the list
will be added to Yad Vashem's online database? Renee

1815-1816 deaths. If you are interested, a $200 contribution to LitvakSIG

My mother's uncle (born about 1865 in Retowo Lithuania) has arrived to New
York on July 1, 1884 >from Rotterdam, Holland.

I have checked Steve Morse website and found out that on that date 2 ships
has arrived the "Saratoga" and the "Balthasar" but there is no information
about port of departure.

How can I learn which one of the two arrived >from Rotterdam? Or perhaps was
there another ship arriving on that day that the site does not list?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

SEWELSON/SEVELSON in the US #general

Dear folks
I have written before about our family reunion re SEWELSON/SEVELSON but am
making another plea for assistance.

My mother in law (Gertrude nee Sewelson) insists that she had family in
Minneapolis but is unsure if it is >from her Toff family or her Sewelson or
Mark family. I thought perhaps Philadelphia was also a likely bet.

Her cousin, Jules Sevelson, has a nephew and niece in California and Gertie
has Toff and Sewelson cousins also in California but it is her father's
brother and his family we cannot locate. He would have left Papile or Telz
in Lithuania between 1900 and 1925 about the time his brothers went to
South Africa and England (1919 and 1911) and he may have changed his name
from Shavelovich/Shevelovich to some anglicised form. I have tried all sorts
of searches and come up empty and of course he may have died without issue.
Ellis Island has thrown up no clues but I keep on trying.

Anyway, you detectives out there may have some clues for me. If not, fine -
I do enjoy reading all the stories you have and love the hunt.
Many thanks

You can tell by looking at the image of the actual manifest, which should
list the port of departure at the top of the form. It's important to
always look at the original document rather than just a transcription in a
database.

Steve Morse's site indicates that the manifests for 1884 are available from
a popular commercial web site, for a fee.

A Jerusalem PAPYRNA family has the same family tree as we have and

We also have a family tradition that we are >from the Gaon, except

The PAPYRNAs who I met were Karlin Chassidim so that puts a possible
