A Jerusalem PAPYRNA family has the same family tree as we have and
they are the only PAPYRNA family I have come across. (That of course
doesn't mean much) So if we could examine possible shared ancestry?

We also have a family tradition that we are >from the Gaon, except
that its >from a different line than the PAPYRNA connection. Chaim
mentions in his book a list of families who have such an oral
tradition but can't produce a detailed connection. Our family is
listed among those.

The PAPYRNAs who I met were Karlin Chassidim so that puts a possible
damper on a possible connection with the Gaon, but whyo Knows...?

Balassagyarmat friends reunited after nearly 65 years #hungary

Steven Lasky <steve725@...>

Greetings,
I am very pleased to tell all of you that the other day I was able to
reconnect two boyhood friends >from Balassagyarmat, Hungary, after nearly
sixty-five years of separation. It is, of course, a vast joy to do such a
thing, especially since so many years have passed, that not many >from the
town survived the Shoah, or are even alive today after so long a time.
Imagine their surprise!

I am writing to you not only to tell you this, but to inquire on their
behalf, purely as a mitzvah, whether there are still others >from
Balassagyarmat who might still be alive, who just need someone like myself
to bring them and other of their landsleit together.

If so, please tell me you name, perhaps something about yourself, include
your email address or other contact info. This request for information also
applies to those of you who have family members, that are no longer living,
regardless of the time frame, who once lived in Balassagyarmat. Again, I am
doing this all because it gives me joy to bring people together after so
many years. Just imagine finding a childhood friend (or long lost family
member) after so many years.

I will place all this new family information on a Word document (with the
permission, of course, of each person who submits info) and distribute it to
all those Balassagyrmat researchers who respond to my request for
information.

Of course, it would be wonderful if even more connections can be made!

Best,
Steven Lasky

Re: Determine name of ship -- arrival July 1, 1884, New York #general

Susan&David

The Historic New York Times does not show either ship arriving on or
about July 1, 1884.
The big paid web-site Ancestry.com does have these two ships and no others
arriving on July 1, 1884. The Saratoga >from Havana, the Baltasar >from
Rio de Janeiro.
It is not unusual for immigrants, in subsequent years, to fail to
recollect with accuracy the date; even the year. of their arrival..
Some of this failure may stem >from the immigrant's early life under the
Hebrew calendar (and the Julian calendar in Russia) and later life under
the Gregorian calendar.

I am afraid, I will also not be able to be there, but I will ask some friends
to send pictures, the synagogue is ready since 2004, when the 60 year
commemoration of the deportation, it was not completted for financial reason,
so I have several pictures during the construction and later.
