English translations of two Swedish books of note #scandinavia

Marian Merritt

I have the results of a massive translation project some members may
be interested to learn about. We have translated Hugo Valentin's
Swedish-language "History of the Jews of Sweden" and Aron Isak's
"Autobiography." The Valentin book includes an index of names which
will be of interest to those with early Swedish Jewish roots.

Aron Isak was the first Jew given permission to settle in Sweden and
his story is very interesting and in parts, entertaining.

The files for the history book are quite large but if you are
interested, I'll figure out a way to add in Google docs. Please email
me for more information.

What are the next steps in locating individuals listed in Warsaw Jews Who Survived WWII, 1948 ? #general

Avraham Y. Kahana

Besides exhausting all search options (all online major databases,
ship manifests, etc), are there any specific steps one should perform
after locating potential relatives in the Warsaw Jews Who Survived

Same person? Naftali Herz ASHKENAZI #general

Dovie Gelerinter

I have come across the name Naftali Herz ASHKENAZI twice in my tree
and they, theoretically, based on the time, family, and location,
could be the same person, but I can't find any confirmation or common
information about them. But I just have this feeling that they are.
But, feelings don't help when you want accuracy, right? :)

1) I have Yaakov Hirsch (1645-1667), son of Feige daughter of Avroham
Yehoshua BABAD (1596-1693). Yaakov had a daughter Chaya who married
Naftali Herz ASHKENAZI (d.1713). I see a a handful of children and
other descendants of theirs.

2) I have Feige KAHANA-SHAPIRA, wife of Aharon Shmuel KAHANA-SHAPIRA
(1690-1756) mother of Natan Neta KAHANA-SHAPIRA. She was the daughter
of Naftali Herz ASHKENAZI. I don't have any more information
(b/d/spouse) on him on that line.

None of the children I see record for the Naftali in the first one are
a FEeige or anything close.

Does anyone know enough about this family to help me definitively
confirm that these are or aren't the same person?

Thank you,

-Dovie Gelerinter

Help with family who emigrated from Germany to Montreal #general

Judi Bartek

Dear Geners,
I am new at this and could use some help. I am tying to locate any information
about my great grandparents who emigrated >from Germany to Montreal in the
1870s era. They went on to start a skirt hoop factory until a flood ruined
there business and then moved to Boston, MA. Their names were Hermann
(1839-1914) and Hudga Hirshfield (not sure of her date of birth). I know that
Herrmann was born in Germany and died in Manhattan.

Any hints on how I can find out more information would be helpful

Thanks so much

Hungarian Newspapers and Obituaries #general

Dear All,

I was wondering: is there a simple way online to locate Hungarian
newspaper clips and especially obituaries and death notices? As many
of you know, these are a very helpful tool for understanding family
ties. However, I never managed to search for those systematically -
only by chance on Google.

Best regards,
