Whence Came The COHN/ABRAMOWITZ Family? #general

Marvin Lauwasser <marvlauw@...>

Morris Cohn married Trina/Tillie Abramowitz and settled, with other
relatives, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and I ended up wed to their
granddaughter, Marlene.

They arrived >from somewhere in eastern Europe but we've never
established the specific town.
There has been a plethora of town origin results in our searches.

1920 census Morris & Trina (as Tillie) Cohn ..birthplace: "Koronsky"
husband Morris Cohn (as Moishe Kagan) arrived NYC on the SS Blaucher
21aug1904..Brasew
Trina Cohn (as Treine Koln) arrived NYC on the SS Vaderland
03apr1905..Rastonsbresie

In 2018 I submitted an image of the Ketuba, establishing the wedding
date as 17feb1904 but again got only an inexact guess of the
community. That Viewmate is archived as #69563. And yes, both of
their fathers were Kohanim.

other relatives of Trina:
brother Leiser Abramowitz arrived via Quebec on the SS Lake Champlain
9jan1903..Russia
sister-in-law Mere Abramowicz with 4 kids arrived NYC on the SS
Potsdam 9jun1908..Kossowe, Grodno
brother Moische Abramowitz arrived NYC 27dec1911 on the SS Ryndaur
(sp?)..Lubisetz, Grodno
sister Rose Abramowitz arrived NYC on the Kroonland 18jul1911..Grodek (sp?)

Kossowe would now be Kosava, Belarus. None of the others are findable.

I'm sure there are many of you, far smarter than me, who might
recognize these locations as real and even had a Jewish population.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Marvin Lauwasser

For general information, it is always free to use FamilySearch. They
require you to register with a user name and password, but no credit
card information is ever taken. The box "Keep me signed in for two
weeks" is simply to avoid logging in for each period of use. However
because of certain legal pressures some particular records can only
be viewed at designated libraries where members of this religious
organisation should be in attendance.

Dear all,

Please note that the Halberstadt family registers and vital records
mentioned by Joelle Meyer are part of a current GerSIG indexing project.
Please contact me or Renee Klisch [ museumcurator40@gmail.com ] if you'd
like to participate in this effort. We are currently focusing on the
vital records in the 36 Gatermann films >from the former East Germany
that familysearch.org has put on line. (24 more are unavailable because
of privacy constraints.)

Also, familysearch.org's services are always free to those who get
themselves a user ID and password. Or, if you will, the free trial lasts
forever!

There is also a mine of information (all the family registers 1762-1794-1800

Dear Joelle
According to https://tinyurl.com/y3p78wth, the Jews of Halberstadt mostly
lived on the following streets, close to the main synagogue in the west of
the town:

Judenstrasse
Bakenstrasse
Im Seidenbeutel
and Im Rosenwinkel.

The main synagogue (built 1710-12) was in the Bakenstrasse; there was a
smaller one (the "Klaussynagoge") on Im Rosenwinkel.

Bessarabia SIG, update for the month of June 2019 #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Dear researchers,
Here is an update for the Bessarabia SIG projects for the month of June 2019.
See also at What's New at Bessarabia SIG website.

Bessarabian Databases. Updates:

- Revision List set of records were sent to JewishGen in June of 2019.
10,088 records >from 2,791 families were transcribed and translated >from
following towns: Ataki, Bendery, Faleshty, Ismail, Kishinev, Khotin, Rashkov,
Romanenko colony, Soroki. See the entire list at:
https://www.jewishgen.org/bessarabia/files/databases/RevisionsJuneOf2019May.pdf

We have great group of translators for the Bessarabia Revision Lists. The
total records we completed as of June 2019 is more than 203,000! Many thanks
to our members who participated in this set translation: Alan Levine, Milla
Donet, Claire Stuart, Evgeniy, Michael Richman, Ilana Voloshin, Lenya Fruman
and Yefim Kogan.

- An article about a latest set >from 1910 Revision List, written by Alan Levine.
One of the projects we are thinking to do is to write information about every
set of Revision Lists. This is the first one explaining what kind of data is in
this set and what we can trust and what not. Here is a direct link to the article:
https://www.jewishgen.org/bessarabia/files/databases/1910FamilyList-AlanL.pdf

Jewish Cemeteries. Updates:

-- Completed Phase 2 - clearing paths, photographing and indexing Brichany
Jewish Cemetery (graves could not be accessed before). Sent to JOWBR 1,439
burial records with 1,430 images and additional 237 images of Unknown graves
can be viewed at Bessarabia SIG website and at Briceni cemetery report:
https://www.jewishgen.org/Bessarabia/files/cemetery/briceni/BriceniCemetery.pdf
